Rating: Summary: Like med school without the lies! Review: Dr. Weil has the unique ability to relay nuggets of medical wisdom and engender a sense of trust in the reader. How many people really trust their Doctors? Believe it or not, there actually is one that you can trust! His books are written in plain english with just enough technical details to convince the reader that Dr. Weil REALLY knows what he is talking about. This book is a one volume wonder with a phenomenal amount of information. Dr. Weil begins with the fundamental aspects of health, like exercise, diet, and breathing, and concludes with an excellent reference to many ailments. Anyone interested in becoming healthy, I recommend you throw out all those "sickness-centric" medical books, and pick up this one book ACTUALLY concerned with health
Rating: Summary: Avoid this book, for your health's sake. Review: Dr. Weil's "one size fits all" approach can be dangerous. I first discovered this book when I was a university student. I was in good health, but with somewhat low energy, so I decided to try "eating better". I followed his low-fat, grain- and soy-filled diet and got sicker and sicker over the next couple of years. I've since discovered that everyone's body is different; mine needs animal protein and lots of healthy fats, and doesn't tolerate grains very well. But there's no room for that in this book, and no room for disagreeing with the doctor's pronouncements. Hmm, seems like his fundamental attitude (know-it-all) isn't so far from those MD's who are opposed to alternative medicine! I give it one star, because if you're living a really unhealthy lifestyle (no exercise, all junk food), it *might* be better than nothing. But if you're interested in taking control of your health, I'd suggest books by Peter D'Adamo, Paul Pitchford, or Zoltan Rona. Not only do they have much more useful information, they also skip the condescending attitude!
Rating: Summary: I was skeptical Review: I have always been skeptical of alternative medicine, after reading this book I am not. Our world has been consumed by prescription medicines, if by following the advice of Mr. Weil you can get off one drug it will be worth it. People need to get back to natural health. I found this book in the suggested reading section of Rat Race Relaxer: Your Potential & The Maze of Life.
Rating: Summary: I really liked it Review: I really liked this book, it told a lot about alternative health that openend my eyes. It is amazing how much more options are out there besides the "allopathic" approach.
Rating: Summary: For anyone who wants live longer... Review: I was recently diagnosed with systemic lupus and upon researching my illness, discovered the world of Dr. Weil. This was the first book I read from him and I'm hooked! I met him personally at his book signing in Virginia recently and he's wonderful in person too! After reading this book, I have a better understanding at what foods will or will not irritate my illness and I have improved miraculously in a short period of time. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve their health and live longer.
Rating: Summary: Wellness Not Weightloss Review: If you are tired of prescriptions, fad diets and books focused only on weight loss, then Dr. Weil's approach in "Natural Health, Natural Medicine" will provide a useful second opinion. This book presents easy tips for living a healthier, more balanced life in a society that often depends on quick fix remedies. It's a handbook for readers interested in robust health. Dr. Weil approaches "Natural Health" as a well-rounded state of being instead of limiting his discussion of wellness to exercises and diets that will shed unwanted pounds. The "Natural Medicine" chapters provide alternative treatments to prescriptions and over the counter remedies. I liked the message of Natural Health so much that I included it on the suggested reading list in my own book, Rat Race Relaxer: Your Potential & The Maze of Life by JoAnna Carey.
Rating: Summary: For anyone who wants live longer... Review: Note to Dr. Weil : Although you suggest Osteopathy and Rolfing for certain conditions I think you may be underprescribing them. Without exception, they would be beneficial to anyone regardless of their health and have yet to receive their full appreciation by the medical community. Contact averbic@aol.com if you need the opinion of someone who has experienced the above therapies or help promoting them. To negative reviewers: You didn't read the book, manage to absorb it properly, or suffer from obsessive skeptic disorder(OSD). Try Ginkgo for concentration.
Rating: Summary: excellent guide to natural health and well being Review: Thank you Dr. Weil-Your book has had a dramatic impact on my life. I am 44yr old male 5ft 7in and weigh in at (formerly 289lb.) 247lbs. I had high blood pressure and took an alpha blocker and a beta blocker for prevention. Also I developed diabetes and was taking oral medication for control of my sugar. Well to make a long story short, I Knew I was killing myself, and needed to do somthing, so I purchased your book after scanning it in the book store. Since that time I have been practicing as much as possible the guidelines that you have laid out about living a natural healthy life. And I am pleased to say today that I do not take any medications for sugar or for hypertension any more. I can hardly beleive it!! I have so much energy now, I hope that this testimony reaches many people in similar situations in the hope that they will take to heart the information in this book. I have underlined and highlighted lots of different passages that are inspiring and helpful. One of the quotes in this book that I now live by,"It is our lazy self, the principle of inertia in us, that tells us we do not need to excercise or do not have time for it. The only way to deal with this voice is to pay no attention to it." Well I don't want to ramble here but if anyone reads this and wants to e-mail me, I would be happy to respond and help anyone that might need to share where they are in their efforts to live healthy. In closing I would like to thank Dr.Weil for his efforts in compiling this information. I AM A NEW PERSON!! thank you Gary Coutcher PS Thank you
Rating: Summary: Way to go Dr. Weil....Naturally! Review: The book tells it like it is! Allopathic doctors should look at the information in this book with their minds wide open---then take a very long hard look at their own practices. The education in this book will only enhance their practices, then maybe their patients would trust them.
Rating: Summary: Don't consult this book! Review: This book needs to be updated a little - last update was 1998/99. However, still good common sense advice. His approach is to tell you what he has found but he acknowledges that every BODY is different -- use his advice as a guideline to discover what really works for you. Good for someone suffering from "mystery diseases" or just fed up with the American Medical System.
