Rating: Summary: The answer for this food addict Review: I disagree with kristimetz who said this book would make people more obsessed with food. A true food addict must abstain from all foods and behaviors that trigger addictive behavior or cravings in order to be free of the obsession with food. For me that means weighing and measuring my food, because I was a volume addict, as well as abstaining from foods that are addictive, ie flour, sugar and wheat. This food plan has freed me from food obsession (along with working a 12 step program with a sponsor). Yes, I weigh and measure three meals a day. Do I mind. No, because I only think about food at mealtime and while preparing it whereas I used to think about food all day long. I'm a much happier and saner person now.
Rating: Summary: This is the only book you'll need! Review: I have been following the food plan outlined in this book for over three years with truly miraculous results. Not only am I maintaining a weight loss of over 100 pounds, but my life has changed dramatically, as well.People tend to read books like this because they want to lose weight (I wanted this too). However, if you follow, not just the food plan, but the entire program of recovery outlined in this book, you will be amazed and delighted by how your life just seems to change for the better! That has been my experience! I have given away every diet book I own, probably 50 books! Diets are not the answer. I found what I need in this book. Try it, you won't be sorry.
Rating: Summary: An approach that will encourage your obsession with food Review: I have skimmed over a few chapters in this book and am really disappointed. Obviously, our understanding of addictions and how to treat them has a long way to go.
The author goes on about the iron control one must have over every bite put into your mouth in order to control the "disease". Her diet (just another diet approach, only even less realistic than most) involves measuring ALL foods for the rest of your life, as well as eliminating ALL flour, refined sugars, wheat, and several other food groups ENTIRELY from your diet - for the rest of your life! (check out http://www.kaysheppard.com/foodplan.htm to see what I mean).
Are people with an eating problem doomed to monitor every bite that goes into their mouths - disallowing even licking a fork - for the rest of their lives?
There has to be a better way, and I will keep searching until I find it. I don't want to trade one obsession for another. I want to find a better way to deal with my day-to-day problems, and reconnect with eating in a healthy manner.
This book left me wondering if the whole AA approach is really the way to go for addiction treatment. I'd love to see some stats on success rates for it.
A more realistic and healthy approach can be found in Ganeen Roth's books, or "Overcoming Overeating", although these approaches have flaws of their own.
Rating: Summary: Keeps It Simple Review: I have suffered from compulsive overeating for 48 years. I have tried Weight Watchers, OA, Jenny Craig, liquid dieting, rice, beans, water...You name it I have tried it. When I started to read this book (mind you grudgingly) I was absolutely enthralled. Language was every day and simple to understand and concepts which would be absolutely ridiculous to a "normal" eater made absolute sense to me. I am actually enjoying learning about myself. The more I learn, the more I understand. I realize that I can finally learn to "eat to live" rather than "live to eat." If you are a warm fuzzy, and are tired of reading the medical jargon and fancy words, please do yourself a big favor and buy this book. If you are seriously looking for help with your compulsive overeating, this program coupled with OA is a miracle. Don't waste anymore time reading about this. GO AND DO IT!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Disagree with KristiMetz Review: I have to strongly disagree with your review of this book. First of all, it helps if you actually read the whole book instead of skimming through it. For a person who has an addiction to food, as an alcoholic has an addiction to alcohol, that person must abstain from all foods that contribute to binges or your body craving more, just as an alcoholic can never again have alcohol. It isn't such a far-fetched idea to abstain from something that makes you sick for the rest of your life. For people who practice abstinence from foods that will trigger binge eating, this is a way of life. It has to be!
If you are looking for a "quick fix" diet, this is not for you. But if you are looking for a new way of living - free from compulsive overeating - this book is a good start.
Rating: Summary: One of the best books on recovery from overeating! Review: If you are trying to lose weight, you need this book! It changed my life and motivated me to do the inner work as well as outer work in order to lose weight permanently. I am living proof that OA works! And this book is written with encouragement and compassion for those of us who struggle with compulsive overeating. A MUST-READ!
Rating: Summary: Food is Not Heroin or Alcohol Review: In many respects this book contains wonderful insights, analysis, guidance and direction and clearly helps define food addiction. However, if you are a vegetarian, there is no food plan approved, thus you are out of luck. The suggested Food Plan is virtually impossible and unrealistic in today's society given the shear number of foods one must eliminate. Abstinence is one thing if it's heroin, entirely another if the substance is food, as one is, by nature, required to eat to survive. Abstaining from all of the "trigger foods" listed seems virtually impossible to me. I can't help but wonder if this Food Plan is what all OA members abide by?
Rating: Summary: Common sense eating Review: Kay Sheppard has hit the nail on the head, over and over again. Fad eating and dieting are killers and must be stopped. Her sensible program for sensible living is a must read. I recommend it to anyone who has a weight problem caused by binge eating habits and addictions.
Rating: Summary: A must read for all food addicts Review: Kay Sheppard's newest book on food addiction is an easy-to-read yet informative guide to recovery for food addicts. It not only helps us better understand food addiction, but more importantly, how to recover from it. The impact that Kay Sheppard's books have had on my life is unsurpassed. I can't recommend them enough.
Rating: Summary: Keeps It Simple Review: The book offers a straightforward, practical plan of action for anyone who wants to overcome compulsive overeating. I've found this book to be very helpful in my own recovery, and have recommended it to others.
