Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Best Over the Counter Acne Treatment Available Review: I am 50 years old and finally cleared up my skin. I've tried every product, both over the counter, and prescription, available, and Dan Kern's program works. I first found out about the program through www.acne.org, and I was thrilled when I found out he was writing a book on the simple, easy to follow treatment for acne, that ANYONE can afford. The irony of this, is that I've even used the so-called #1 acne treatment in America, ProActiv Solution, and didn't work as well as this program. The reason is, those famous dermatologists don't tell you how to USE benzoyl peroxide properly. Dan Kern, a former acne sufferer DOES. Here's something else that I found ironic. I ordered Dan's book, Clear Skin and also the new book on acne by the famous dermatologists who invented proActiv Solution, called Unblemished. I found their program complicated, much information in their book was repetitive, and of course they push their own products. The information in Clear Skin is easy, simple to follow, well-written, and a God-send for those of us with terminal acne. It worked for me, when nothing else did! Save your money and order this book!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Finally, clear skin at age 52! Review: I have had acne for about 40 years, but because of the treatment described in this book my skin is now clear. And I mean unbelievably clear. Over the decades, I've used everything (except Accutane). Retin-A made my face red, oral antibiotics gave me yeast infections, and salicylic acid and other over-the-counter and mail-order products didn't do the job. I had even tried the product discussed in this book, but I had abandoned it because I didn't know how to use it SUCCESSFULLY. In this book Dan Kern tells you exactly what to do to use benzoyl peroxide successfully. Just read the book and DO IT. Since the first couple of weeks (the break-in period), I have not had to pop pimples -- that's one hobby I'm glad to give up. I actually get compliments on my skin now, and does that ever feel good. I often see teenagers around town with skin like I used to have, and I want to tell them about this book, but I haven't because I don't want to make them feel like their poor skin is being inspected in public. Please, please -- librarians and school nurses -- buy this book and put it where kids will see it. And if you're an adult and still having acne like I was, give this method a try. Nobody should have to deal with acne and wrinkles at the same time. Many thanks to the author for making his findings available to the rest of us suffering mortals. This mortal now has less suffering!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: from a veteran (and skeptical) acne battler Review: I have had acne since I was 12 (I am now 21), and I have to say that following the regimen prescribed in this book has made the most significant change in my skin in comparison to anything else I have tried, including more 'serious' approaches and medications such as accutane.
I'll be honest, using as much benzoyl peroxide as Dan recommends sucks, mostly because of the mild to moderate burning sensation and the dry skin that it leaves after applying the cream for about 20 minutes afterward. But it is worth it if you have struggled as much as I have with my moderate acne. According to Dan, the burning sensation is not that bad for most people, and I have found that after the initial few weeks on the regimen, the buring became more mild every day and easier to handle, as well as the dry skin. Benzoyl Peroxide also stains clothing a little, though I have not had much of a problem with it. It can also stain or bleach hair, but it is very minimal, and I have only experienced a few of my eyebrow hairs going from dark brown to blond, and even then it can only be noticed when scrutinizing them a few inces from a mirror.
I have found a couple of things that have helped: find a mild cleanser, really moisturizing lotion, and be as gentle with your skin as possible! (I like cetaphil, but experiment to find your own, and Dan sells his own 2.5% benzoyl peroxide cream online for a great price. he is not out to make huge amounts of money like others claiming to cure acne, such as ProActiv!) The difference between this acne regimen and others, such as Proactiv, is essentially the amount of benzoyld peroxide cream used and the elimination of manual and chemical exfoliation with AHA/BHA or salicylic acid products. Dan recommends applying about an ounce of bp cream each time, while most systems recommend only about a dime sized amount. (trust me, this is a drastic change!)
He explains exactly the reasoning and how to follow his guidelines in the book, so please(!) follow Dan's advice! Another point to keep in mind is almost everything in this book is online at acne.org for free, so please check out the site and it's great recommendations first before ordering the book! While this book and Dan's regimen offer relief for most acne sufferers, this is not a cure for acne but a way to manage it on a daily basis, and once under control, acne will most likely reappear if you stop the regimen and doing exactly what Dan tells you to do.
With that said, this regimen has helped to keep my skin clearer than anything that I have tried. I have been on almost every acne medication that can be prescribed, including accutane, and while they helped clear my skin to a degree, you can't stay on drugs indefinitely, and once I stopped them my acne would either immediately or eventually reappear just as badly or worse than it was before I was on the medications. This system is what is helping me keep my skin under control on a long term basis without the side effects of oral drugs.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Simple, Effective Plan Review: Like many, I had tried a lot of methods to rid myself of this destructive disease. This method worked. I am 25, and I had acne scince 14. It is April 2004 and I have used Dan's routine for clear skin for about 1 and a half years now. I have very clear skin, and not a day goes by where I don't thank the powers that be that I found this cure. It really works, buy the book and do it!
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Could have got this information for FREE... Review: off of the author's website www.acne.org. Each and everything in this book is on that website free of charge with a downloadable video (at the time of this review writing). This "method" is similar to ProActiv's except a non-ProActiv brand of cleanser and benzoyl peroxide are used. Considerably more BP is applied with this method as well. Still this method will end up costing much less than ProActiv. Also, judging by the testimonials on here, in the actual book, and on acne.org, this method is rather successful for the long term. Dan Kern's clear skin method treatment will lead to staining of pillowcases and apparel (especially if one has body acne), but some see that as a small price to pay for a clearer or completely clear complexion. Also as a heads up, this method is not intended for the "severe" acne cases. I am most certainly NOT an advocate for the ProActiv system, which was not very effective for my moderate acne by the way. Please understand- I am not trying to rain on the parade, but I am just listing some possibly negative points that were not mentioned in other reviews. I do wish someone had written about them, before I purchased this book.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: help for acne sufferers Review: This book is an excellent guide to treating and controlling acne. Most acne sufferers will be helped by this program. For me,I had to substitute salicylic acid because the benzoyl peroxide was too irritating, even the 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide. Most dermatologists recommend 2.5 percent instead of 10 percent because its equally effective and far less irritating.Best to apply these products at bedtime so they wont be inadvertantly removed.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: help for acne sufferers Review: This is the best book I've read about acne and treating it! I'm an esthetician and I recommend Dan's book and also his website (www.acne.org) to all my acne and acne-prone clients and just about anyone else that I meet or talk to that deals with acne and breakouts. Everyone should experience clear skin!
