Rating: Summary: Not even one star, the reviews are PLANTED Review: All the reviews from "Customer" from various cities are fake, just false advertising for this very inadequate book. Don't be mislead. Read my real review down below.
Rating: Summary: The best possible book for anyone in the helping professions Review: I am a life coach who heard Dr. Martha Pieper on The Coaching Show (wsradio.com)Nov. 16th and everything she said about removing barriers to self-improvement that come from the addiction to unhappiness not only made sense but explained why so many of our clients hit roadblocks. She went on to give excellent advice for getting past setbacks -- most importantly, to expect them and treat them as signs of progress rather than failure. I bought the book and it is full of incredibly helpful and original ideas and solutions for problems in every area of life. I can't recommend it highly enough both for coaches and for everyone who wants to change their life. If you like, you can hear Dr. Pieper's interview in the archive section of ws.com.
Rating: Summary: Finally! A book that speaks to ME! Review: I have gone through my share of self-help books, but I have yet to read one that helped me understand WHY I'm the way I am. This book definitely did that. By understanding the cause of my behavior, I am more confident I can make the improvements that will make a positive impact on so many areas of my life. I am grateful to the authors for their insight. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who experienced overcritical parents or who had responsibilities to take care of beyond their years. I would have liked to see more detailed step-by-step instructions or possibly some written exercises, but, overall, a big help!
Rating: Summary: If you want to change your life, this is the book you want! Review: I have tried so many many self-improvement programs only to slide backwards again. I never understood why this kept happening until I read this book. Finally I see that although I wanted so much to change, at the same time an addiction to unhappiiness kept pushing me back to where I started. Once I understood what the problem was, I have been much much more successful than ever before and when I do start to slip, I know what is happening and why and I can fix things and get back on track. I cannot recommend this book highly enough - of all the self-help books out there, it is the one that can really change your life.
Rating: Summary: Eye-opener - great book for my life! Review: I read this book about six months ago, when I was really depressed and knew something was wrong. The title of this book caught my eye because I had a sense that indeed I did become happy when something bad would happen. Sounds insane, but I had realized this was my truth. So I read the book, and the stories given helped me learn that I was not alone in these behaviors. It opened my eyes to look at my own life and choices to see how bad I treat myself and how I'm caught it this destructive cycle. This book helped me understand what I was doing and let me feel that there is nothing wrong with just me. I was not alone!! I highly recommend this book, and I tell many others who asked me how I've overcome so much this past year, that if you are depressed and know something is wrong in your life, this book is something you should read. I'm even going to read it again, because breaking the pattern of creating my own unhappiness is hard to break.
Rating: Summary: What is suspicious about a super book getting good reviews? Review: I read this boook and loved it, as apparently did most of the people who reviewed it. I can't understand the writer who seems to think that anyone who disagrees with her and was helped by the book has to be dishonest - what an ego!
Don't be affected by this grump - this book is the real deal - it has changed my life for the better. And I am not a plant!!
Rating: Summary: Real depth of understanding Review: I've read a lot of self-help books and this one is really different. It presents a new idea to help understand unhappiness and be happier. Most people try to change things outside of themselves to be happier, but just end up feeling the same. This book explains why that is and what you can do about it. It is not so simple minded as most self help books but acknowledges the complexity of people's minds. I think it bears slow, thoughtful reading and probably you would get even more out of it if you re-read it. There's real substance to it. I do think you have to be serious about doing what it recommends and not just thinking about it. The chapter on relationships alone is worth several times the price of this book. Definitely worthwhile.
Rating: Summary: Revolutionary and effective help! Review: Really I am a self-help junkie - have tried everything. This is the first book that has helped me big time and I waited a few months to write this review to make sure everything I learned has stuck with me. Icontinue to make big progress. This is NOT flash in the pan help! Understanding that backsliding is part of the healing process and not an indication of failure is just one of the nuggets that stick with you. And there are lots of excellent suggestions about relationships, health, and work. And if you sometimes go on emotional roller coasters like I do, this book will help you feel much steadier internally - without medication. If you want your life to go better, get this book!
Rating: Summary: Beware these reviews. I think they are planted. Review: This book does not deserve the reviews it is getting. It looks like a con job. See my review way down the list. Everytime someone tells the truth about the book, 20 people from the same two towns chime in and vote the rating back up.
Rating: Summary: If you want self-help that works, try this Review: This is a self-help approach that really works! Tested in the Piepers' clinical work over more than three decades, this is an approach that does not offer a quick fix but instead a route to making lasting changes; it doesn't offer panaceas, but instead examples that you can identify with and learn from of people developing into the competent and compassionate people they want to be. The Piepers help people understand the sources of their difficulties and planfully develop their potential for self-regulation. They are especially helpful when it comes to understanding people's struggles in relationships, ranging from professional to friend to romantic relationships. Bravo to the Piepers for another great contribution that helps us become better people for ourselves and others! If you are a parent and want to know more about this approach, see their book on parenting, Smart Love.
