Summary: Because of this book, I lost 55 lbs!
Review: I accidently found this book at the local library. In 5 months of following the book's guidelines, I lost 55 lbs!
I've tried just about every diet imaginable and this seems to be the only thing that works. I thought it was going to be a major sacrifice, but when you lose weight this quick, you realize that it really isn't and that it's worth it!
Everyone should read this book, even if you're not overweight. You'll look AND feel better!

Summary: I like Dr. Barnard
Review: I saw this book online and borrowed it from the library. So very glad I didn't purchase it! When I read on page 12 that "your metabolism is like the rate at which a car uses up gas; an idling car uses some fuel, but when it runs, especially uphill, it burns more. Our bodies work the same way", I slapped my forehead. No kidding!

Basically, as long as you're a vegetarian, you can follow this diet. It berates the effects of animal protein and fats and lauds complex carbohydrates as the secret to weight loss. I guess it all depends on how your body responds to carbs. If you can fill up on rice or potatoes with legumes as your source of protein without having your bloodsugar plummet, maybe this book is for you. Personally, I do better on a diet that is balanced with lean protein, fruits and veggies, and a minimal amount of monounsaturated fats (such as olives, macadamia nuts, natural peanut butter, avocados, etc.). If you want to know more about a vegan diet, then get a book that deals specifically with that topic. Skip this one.

Summary: Foods that Cause you to Lose Weight
Review: I used to be 12 stone. I tried various diets to get my weght down, including the low carbohydrate diet.The only diet that worked is the one promoted in this book: namely a low fat vegan diet plus 30 minutes of exercise each day.
I got my weight down to 8 stone 11 pounds using the ideas in this book.
There is far more variety in my diet now than there was when I ate animal foods.

Summary: Become a vegetarian
Review: Let me help you in your selection by summerizing this book. To lose weight, simply eat as much vegetables and fruits and grains as you want but do not touch any dairy, meats, or fats. There you go. If you get really hungry, stuff yourself with pasta or potatoes because it doesn't matter but if you do not agree with the author he has a simple answer, 'You are confused and do not understand!' The only other reason to purchase this book is to read the author's silly analogies and opinions that have no references to scientific fact. This book and the rest of the author's publications are just regurgitations of the old 'no-fat' diet. Buy the book if this is what you are looking for. As for me, I wish I had known the author was an extreme vegan for then all his opinions would of made sense and I would have gone to a more fact-based source.

Summary: Foods that Cause you to Lose Weight
Review: Loved it! I can eat plenty, not starve myself and I actually lose weight in the right places: stomach, hips and thighs! I also feel like a 9 year old full of energy (I am actually 42), strong, healthy and happy. I have the feeling carnivors won't like this book because once you are set in your meat eating ways, it takes the force of an earthquake to change. But I have been a vegetarian for 17 years and in the last few years I had been putting on weight regardless of how little I ate or how much I exercised. Well Dr. Barnard had the answer: No fat, no dairy, and great new recipes to try. That's all I had to do. And I only spent 6 bucks for this. Highly recommend this book to those open minded enough and/or desperate enough to lose weight without going hungry, and without having to follow dumb diets like the "peanut diet", the "Atkins diet", the "sushi diet", etc...

Summary: another extreme diet
Review: the book is not that bad, but definitely not worth the money. Dr. Barnard wants us to be vegans. No meat, no poultry, not even olive oil. Also, he says the the fat in tuna is "bad fat" which is not true. The list of negative calorie foods that he provides is rather short and can be obtained on the internet for free. If you think you can be a vegan, the book is for you, otherwise save your money.

Summary: Misleading Title
Review: This book should have been called "Foods That Cause You to Become a Vegetarian". It's all about how bad animal products are for you and why you shouldn't eat meat or dairy products. The menus and recipes in the back are 99.9% vegetarian. If 'broccoli burritos' make your mouth water, then this is the book for you. I fully understand that meat doesn't have a "negative calorie effect", but there should have been a disclaimer that this book was from the vegetarian point of view and it wouldn't contain any information about how to integrate "the foods that cause you to lose weight" into any diet. However, the book was fairly inexpensive so it's hard to complain too much ....

Summary: TITLE MISLEADING
Review: This book should have been called, become a vegaterain and loose weight. Eat only raw veggies or cooked ones with no toppings except non fat dressing. You can eat as much as you want as long as it's vegetarian. There is no need to count calories on this diet. Don't have milk, eggs(not even egg whites), butter, oil(not even olive oil), nuts or anything else that tastes good and you WILL loose weight. It works but no need to buy the book this short summary should do the trick.

Summary: LOSER - That's a good thing, right?
Review: Unlike the Atkins diet, which made my breath stink, gave me constipation and a number of other unmentionable symptoms, this diet worked great for me. I didn't give up meat entirely but was able to incorporate more plant foods into my diet after reading this book. Not only did I lose 20 pounds, I also quit getting sick! Everyone at work was getting the flu this past winter, but I didn't get sick once. I didn't even take the flu shot. Everyone I know who is still trying to go on the Atkins plan (and getting on and off of it consistently because they can't stick to it) is getting sicker. Whatever their ailments before, they've gotten worse, and that includes arthritis and asthma. Meanwhile, I'm feeling better and better and looking great. Have started an exercise program and looking forward to improving my diet even more. By the way guys, if you are a Viagra candidate, then I suggest you try this diet first. The same foods that cause your arteries to clog up will cause you problems in other areas as well.

Try it. If you are not too stubborn.
