Rating: Summary: The Best Book ever for Panic Disorder Review: As a short time sufferer of Panic Attacks, this is the second book I have read regarding them. I have come to appreciate his description of what happens to our bodies during a panic attack and his solutions of breathing exercises and relaxation techniques. This is a great source for information on Panic Attacks. And NO you are not crazy!...
Rating: Summary: Made me Nervous! Review: I have been suffering from panic and anxiety since I was 4 years old. This book was recommended by my therapist, and I found it tremendously panic-inducing! It's a little dense, and there's a very thick section in the beginning which just describes panic over and over and over again... !!!!!
Sometimes, I've found that reviewing the symptoms of panic can actually get me to calm down. I realize that these are just symptoms, and they'll go away when I can calm down. Not so with this book. It makes me too nervous, and I have to put it down. I've never been able to read more than a few pages without feeling sick.
It's utterly useless, in my opinion, to those it's trying to help. May be a good read for the spouse or partner of a suffering person. Have someone read it and give you the information!
Rating: Summary: must buy Review: I used this book and Reid Wilson's tapes to learn to manage anxiety attacks. Now, six months later, I am off medication and manage the occasional panic on my own. This is an invaluable book.
Rating: Summary: Get yourself this book and feel better! Review: I used to be embarrassed of my panic and anxiety disorder. I tried to hide it, and deal with it all on my own. I was even embarrassed to buy this book! Thank goodness for the privacy of Amazon.com, or I might never had read this fantastic book! The biggest thing that I got out of this book is the fact that I am not alone! And neither are you! The amount of people suffering with anxiety and panic disorders is astonishing! With the knowledge that you are not a "freak", you will keep reading and learn new techniques to keep panic at bay at how to deal with it when it strikes unexpectedly. Don't wait any longer, help yourself gain your life back.
Rating: Summary: It Works but you have to Work at it Review: If you suffer from panic attacks or know someone who does, this book gives the complete description and ways to beat the problem. I learned more from this book than years of therapy ever gave me. It's amazing what we can find out for ourselves.
Rating: Summary: Very worthwhile Review: Its been over two years since I've read this book, but even though its not fresh in my head, I have a very positive comment. It helped me immensely. Panic attacks were controlling my life, and I had no idea where to turn. The school doctor didn't help. This book explained everything quite clearly and made me realize that I wasn't crazy. I don't know how long recovery would have taken without this book. It is a must read for anyone who suffers from severe anxiety.
Rating: Summary: Heal thyself with this book Review: No one asks for a panic attack, but you certainly remember the first one: rapid breathing, quickened heartrate and the absolute certainty that you are tettering on the brink of death or psychosis. Suddenly the world becomes a checklist of things to avoid. The ultimate end of all panic attacks are you huddled in your bedroom, paralyzed with fear of everything and nothing all at once. Don't Panic cured me of this.
For those who aren't so sure about drugs or wary of therapy, this book provides you with concrete, pratical solutions of regaining your life. There is no psycho-babble or esoteric theorums - only real-life psychology and application. The way Reid Wilson guides you through your panic struck me as almost psychic in nature. The most important thing to remember is that millions of people are suffering the *same* worries and doubts that you are at this very moment. There is no shame or humiliation in taking steps to remedy your problems, even though you will probably feel both with your panic attacks and when you buy this book.
It's ironic...in your battles against panic attacks you'll hear the advice 'You've just got to get over it'. For the sufferer, this is his/her greatest dream, yet it seems constantly out of reach. Some reviewers tell that this book made them worse; the book itself explains why this is. When you talk of your fears, its only natural that they'll get inflamed at first. Ultimately it's a step on the path to recovery, and recovery isn't always easy. A final note: obsessive-compulsive disorder mirrors the symptoms of panic attacks in many ways. That's worth noting for some of you. The same author offers a book on that topic. If you've found your way here, you're halfway home. I'd recommend also to start taking Vitamin B tablets - no joke.
Rating: Summary: Reading this book was really a turning point for me Review: This book has helped me more than anything else in my struggle to deal with panic. I've had panic attacks for the last 9 years or so -- since I was 17 -- although I didn't know/wouldn't admit what they were for a long time. I was really on a slippery slope and things were getting so much worse more recently; after reading positive reviews here on amazon, I read this book and it really has changed my life. There is so much material here that it can be a little overwhelming -- but now I am rereading different parts that I now see are relevant, and it's such a tremendous resource. Some readers have said that Dr. Wilson's listing of symptoms made them more anxious; but for me, it was a huge relief to realize that other people suffer from these problems too, and to know that there are symptoms I don't have. I now realize that in struggling with panic I was feeding it, and that I have to learn to relax and not be frightened of having another attack. This is obviously very difficult, but Dr. Wilson's recommended techniques have been very effective for me. I've also realized how much they can benefit my life overall in a very positive way, not just in dealing with the negative aspects of panic attacks, but in helping me enrich my life overall. I feel like I am gaining control of my life again, and it's such a relief! If you are struggling with panic -- or if you are trying to support someone who is -- I can't imagine a better resource than this book .
Rating: Summary: This book helped me regain control of my life !! Review: This is a wonderful book for anyone who wants clear informitave answers of what this disorder is all about. It helped me in many ways learn to deal with my panic disorder. One of my biggest fears was that my life was becoming very restricted by this disorder. I thought I was going to have to take medication for the rest of my life. With this book I was able to get my life back together without medication. There is a section in the book about the connection between premenstrual syndrome and anxiety. I had a great deal of stress in my life and I found myself very anxious during PMS. He shows in this section that diet has a strong impact on reducing symptoms of anxiety and panic. The book teaches how to refocus our thoughts. This was very helpful for me dealing with my panic disorder because in the past I was very quick to scare myself. If there was even a slight feeling of fear I would take that fearful thought and run with it causing myself great anxiety and at times panic attacks. By refocusing my thoughts like this book teaches, helped me to control the unrealistic array of scary thoughts from pouring into my head and replacing them with soothing, comforting and believable words. He speaks of breathing techniques and how they help the sufferer gain control of body symptoms in any given situation, from sitting in a dental chair to being locked in a traffic jam. He teaches by maintaing control of your breathing it sends a message to the brain that all is all is well and there is no need for panic. I would reccomend this book to anyone who wants to put an end to this disableing disorder.
Rating: Summary: It Works but you have to Work at it Review: Yes we can just see a doctor and take pills and forget about the underlying causes of panic. This book is based on Dr Claire Weekes work but Wilson uses his own terms to make it easier, and adds techniques to reduce panic and explains the physical symptoms of certain dieses that can cause panic. This book should not make anyone panic more but rather understand what takes place inside of a panic person's mind. By the way, I have had panic for over twenty years and these books have helped me more than any doctor has to this day. I do recommend Dr Wilson's book and I also recommend Edmund J Bourne PhD. When you face your fears panic shrink and your freedom grows but when you don't face your fears you fears grow and your freedom shrinks (based on my own experience (very true try it)). Good Luck:)
