Rating: Summary: Finally Free Review: ...and reading this book was an important first step in that process. All those so-called weight-loss "solutions" out there have one thing in common: they all want your money. It can also be argued that they have one more thing in common: they don't work in the long run. This book is the badly needed type of reality check for crawling out from under the agony of obesity. It tears down the myths behind the "quick" approaches, gives frank accounting of the real cost of gruesome surgical methods and their horrible aftermath. And points you in the right direction. It's an easy read, but you'll want to read it more than once.
Rating: Summary: Die-ts are out! Review: After reading Kay Sheppard's 2 books on food addiction I am in complete agreement with her on the source of my overeating. As a former area manager for Weight Watchers in NZ,and Australia I thought I knew all there was to know about food and nutrition. I couldn't for the life of me figure out why I knew so much and still continued to have problems with food. Now I have my answer. I am an addict. As long as I live I will never be allowed to go on to a maintenance program as I know it. Every time I did, I went back to my old pattern of binge eating candies and sweets. With it came the result I loathed. Weight gain and all the unhappiness and erratic behavior that comes with being out of control. Kay Sheppard explains it in full and offers excellent advice to people like myself. I have never seen it in such simple terms. Everyone with an addictive eating pattern NEEDS to read this book and follow Ms. Sheppard's plan for abstinence from addictive foods and binges. It's all so freeing.
Rating: Summary: IT WORKS AND IS EASIER THAN YOU THINK Review: After trying (and failing) for years to lose weight with Weight Watchers and dieting, I had almost concluded that significant weight loss was for me, not possible. Then I was introduced to the principles of Kay Sheppard's food regimen, and in four months, lost 30 pounds. I am still losing, and for the first time, without having to fight feelings of deprivation and those terrible food cravings. If this is a diet, it is the easiest and most effective diet I have ever been on. My friends and family are amazed. There are two major aspects of Sheppard's food regimen: (1) the physiological aspects of food addiction that derive from low blood sugar due to a hypoglycemic response to flour and sugar in the diet, which is what causes the food cravings and binging, and (2) the moral, spiritual and pyschological support needed to get through the early withdrawal phase, and for many, to stay in recovery. Sheppard mentions support organizations like Overaters Anonymous and Food Addicts Anonymous, which provide sponsors, information, and moral support for the morbidly obese and other food addicts. I have personally met several individuals in such organizations who have lost over 100 pounds (one young woman had lost 150 pounds)with the result that their lives had turned around and their health restored. The reviewer below who reports that she failed in this food program should try again, this time with a sponsor and an organization to help her. If you have a significant weight problem or eating disorder, read Kay Sheppard's book. It will be the first step on your road to recovery.
Rating: Summary: I'm back Review: I bought this book 12 years ago and attended Kay Sheppards treatment program. I lost 60 lbs, had 5 years of abstinence and the only freedom from food I have ever known. Then I decided to get "flexible" so it would be easier for me to live in "the world". At first I thought I had it under control, but slowly my eating has escalated and now I find myself 45 lbs heavier, back into bingeing, uncontrollable consumption of sweets and a bevy of emotional and health problems to go with. After reading old journals and seeing how happy and sane I was during those 5 years --- well I decided I can continue with this trek toward insanity and death or I can surrender myself to this simple program. So I'm back. The critics of this program are either in denial or not full blown food addicts --- yet. This is no magic bullet. It works if you work it. Thank you Kay for your uncompromising honesty.
Rating: Summary: A valuable insight into food addiction. It really can help! Review: I never knew what was wrong with me until I read this book. I always struggled with food, and have been a compulsive overeater my whole life. This book gave me the courage to stop eating compulsively. I now enjoy freedom from the grips of sugar and flour products, and no longer think about food on a minute by minute basis. I am maintaining a 90lb weight loss, and feel wonderful. Thank you Kay Sheppard!
Rating: Summary: unreasonable Review: I'm sorry, but honestly, I bought both of her books, read a few chapters, and I just don't like her approach to food. Food is an addiction, yes, but I think it is unreasonable to live the rest of your life without some flour, some sugar, some good fat, and boiled meat!!!?? jesus, the day I have to eat boiled meat, just put a fork in me, I'm done and on my way to straight up deprivation binge cycles or anorexia. eating is a privelage and one of life's great pleasures, people who are healthy are priveleged to have this pleasure but life needs balance. I think of the my many relatives that have had cancer and could not eat.Even though I think Sheppard has some great connections about food and addiction, I think her approach is too extreme and not mind/body focused enough, and frankly I just didn't like her. Kudos to those she has helped, get it where you can! But, I don't think this is a five star book - going back to Geneen Roth

Rating: Summary: WORKING SO FAR Review: SO FAR SO GOOD! I HAVE BEEN VERY STRESSED OVER THE YEARS FROM BINGE AND COMPULSIVE EATING. I AM ONLY 32 YEARS OLD AND WAKE UP EVERYDAY WORRIED ABOUT MY WEIGHT AND STRESSED OVER DIETING. FOR THE PAST 15 YEARS IT HAS BEEN THIS WAY. I TRIED TALKING TO MY FAMILY AND THEY BLOW ME OFF SAYING YOU WORRY TO MUCH. MY WEIGHT HAS GONE UP AND DOWN OVER THE YEARS AND I KNOW IT COULD EASILY GET OUT OF HAND DUE TO MY FAMILY HISTORY. I FINALLY BROKE DOWN TO MY SISTER AND SHE TOLD ME TO GO TO THE BOOKSTORE TO THE SELF HELP SECTION AND SEE IF THEY WERE ANY BOOKS ON EATING DISORDERS AND IF ANYTHING DESCRIBED ME. I WENT AND PICKED UP THE BOOK "FOOD ADDICTION THE BODY KNOWS" AND I FELT LIKE THE BOOK WAS ABOUT MY LIFE. I IMMEDIATELY TOOK THE BOOK HOME AND STARING READING IT AND COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. THE BOOK DESCRIBES ME TO A TEE. LOOKING BACK I COULD RELATE THAT IT SEEM LIKE WHEN I WOULD EAT ONE PIECE OF CANDY OR ONE PIECE OF BREAD I FELT LIKE I JUST COULD NOT GET ENOUGH AND THE OVER WHELMING FEELING TO KEEP GOING BACK FOR MORE WAS UNCONTROULBE. I HAVE JUST RECENTLY GIVEN UP ALL SUGAR AND BREADS ALONE AND CAN TELL THE DIFFERENCE AND I AM LESS STRESSFUL. IF THIS CONTINUES TO WORK THIS BOOK HAS SAVED MY LIFE! THANKS KAY SHEPPARD!!
Rating: Summary: Interesting...but quite a taxing plan to follow Review: This book is well written and informative. It has a very thourough plan of healing...but you can never again eat any food with sugar, wheat or flour in it.
Rating: Summary: I'm back Review: This is one of the very few books that tells it like it really is. No medical books or doctors address the issues in this book. The world needs to be ed8ucated on the material inside. A MUST READ and LIFE SAVER for those who can't stop eating.
