Summary: This works!
Review: I have tried to lose weight and this approach is the first that actually works. I have lost 7 pounds in 2 months. It is a sensible approach to one's diet, focusing on eating lots of vegetables and fruits.

When you fill up on water-rich food (veggies & fruits), it's easy to avoid ingesting foods like chips and sweets. The idea is to eat when you are hungry, but eat foods that are veggie-rich. It also suggests that you don't eat when you're not hungry. I found this hard at first, but when I want to eat and am not hungry, I make myself a healthy salad, and it's satisfying.

Give this a shot - the book is worth it's cost. I'm finally down the road of weight loss! I hope it works for you, too!

Summary: The best weight management book
Review: I lost 15.4lbs in 4 months without feeling hungry. Best of all I have kept the weight off for one year.

The information on serving sizes, comparison of fat, calories/volume of different types of foods & showing how to load up on fresh veggies re-educated me in making better food choices. I found the illustrations like raisins(small volume) vs grapes (large volume) an eye opener as to how differences in water content or fibre can fill me up with much less calories.

The eating management plan was sensible & balanced. The chapter on how to work out my daily calorie & nutrition requirements helped me gain control of my eating. I only had to reduce my calorie intake modestly to lose weight slowly & steadily. Together with exercise I am now lighter, fitter & more energetic.

Although I didn't use most of the recipes in the book, the recipe renovations gave me lots of tips on how to make my own cooking more healthful.

The great thing is that knowing how to rationalise the major food groups in my daily diet meant that there were no forbidden foods.

Summary: This Is The Book To Read
Review: The summary of this book is as follows, "Eat foods with a high water content. This decreases the energy density and makes you feel fuller on fewer calories. Combine with exercise and you will lose weight". This could have been stated in one chapter, but one chapter books do not sell; therefore, hundreds of pages were written to tell you this.

I'll admit that some helpful recipes were included and tips on how to reduce the calories of your meals without reducing the content. But, this book was longer than it should have been.
Consider this review a "Cliff's Notes" version of the book.

Summary: A commonsense guide to sensible dieting
Review: There are many diet books out there by self-proclaimed experts in the field of nutrition and weight control. Dr. Barbara Rolls has a lifetime of experience dealing with the mechanisms underlying the control of human eating behavior. In this book she brings the lessons learned in the human intake laboratory to the practical problem of losing and maintaining weight loss. This is not a trivial issue. Obesity has severe medical consequences and fewer than 10% of obese people are able to lose weight and keep it off for prolonged periods of time. A lifestyle change is required. "Volumetrics" provides a sensible way to moderate your diet in a way that can be sustained for a lifetime. It provides information about caloric density and ways to bulk up the foods you eat without adding calories. It is a must read for all obese people who are serious about weight loss.

Summary: Stop Suffering With Fad Diets
Review: This one doesn't present you with a fish, it teaches you how to fish. You will learn how to modify your favorite dishes to be LARGER portioned with FEWER calories. No kidding! The given recipes are REAL FOOD that normal people would actually eat on a regular basis, but with enough variety to keep it interesting. I have tried all different kinds of "quickie" diets and other diets published by people claiming to be doctors, and they have almost all of them been totally ridiculous in their meal plans and what they expect you to eat. (The only one that was not so bad was FREE). The only reason I didn't give it five stars was because I wanted MORE RECIPES! This is good food and good eating. The biggest plus is that you WILL lose weight and reshape your body as you lose fat, AND you will be able to maintain it. No more roller-coaster. (All just by changing the way you prepare your food!)
Bottom-line: Want to quit dieting and actually lose the weight and keep it off forever?. Buy this book and USE it!

Summary: missing star sodium alert
Review: This otherwise useful/valuable book (see other reviews) is marred by lack of care in the matter of sodium. When the caloric content of food is reduced(desireable for weight loss) the sodium from added salt should also be reduced. For example, an extra helping of Vegetable Curry Soup, or Chili Ranchero would be fine calorically, but in one item of one meal, would exceed the recommended daily maximum sodium intake, ~2000mg. This is an unnecessary risk, since by using simple techniques the salt content of most conventional recipes can be cut at least in half with miniscule loss in flavor. To understand the many reasons for salt restriction, "The Salt Solution" by Boynton, McCarty, and Moore, and "Salt, Diet, and Health" by MacGregor and de Wardener, are highly recommended.

Summary: Outstanding weight loss book!
Review: When this book came out there was very little hype about it. The title is not sexy, there are no exciting visuals, weight loss is not fast. Thus many people ignored it and hopped on the "diet of the week" bandwagon.

Yet "The Volumetrics Weight-Control Plan" by Rolls and Barnett is one of the best, easiest to follow "diet" plans on the market. And it is backed up by research.

The plan is simple. On a daily average most people eat about the same weight of food. That weight could have a caloric value of 1500 calories or 2500 calories depending on what you select to eat. Rolls and Barnett teach you to eat lower calorie but high satiety foods by increasing the water rich foods in your diet. Foods like fruits and vegetables. These will fill you up and thus you will eat less.

For example you could eat Italian Pasta Salad with a lot of veggies and for 200 calories eat TWICE as much as Italina Pasta Salad thats heavy on the rotini. You could eat one 60 calorie cookie in a snap or eat one juicy water filled apple for the same amount of calories over a longer period of time. You get more food for the same calories. Because you are eating more food you will over the course of the day eat less and thus your calories will be lower and you will over time lose weight.

Rolls and Barnett give plenty of recipes, substitutions, and suggestions to help you easily accomplish your goals. Try it today. Have a cup of soup or an apple prior to eating lunch. Thise foods are filling and you will eat less of the energy dense foods like chips and candy.

An easy to understand, excellent plan for good health and weight loss!
