Rating: Summary: Dressing Smart must require a high IQ Review: Let me preface this by saying that I work in the field of career counseling, so matters of professional attire are central to my work.Having said that, I must note that I have been astounded to see all the rave reviews of this book. Not that it is a terrible book, but it simply is NOT THAT GOOD. For one thing, the author writes in a very cutsey manner, calling underwear "underlovelies" as one example. Another problem with this book, as I see it, is that there are no illustrations. Surely a book on image and dress should include some visuals! While this book is certainly comprehensive and the information it imparts did strike me as being on the money, I could not get beyond Ms. Nicholson's chatty writing style...I felt it diminished her credibility. I much prefer THE COMPLETE IDIOT's GUIDE TO SUCCESSFUL DRESSING by Karyn Repinski or even MASTERING YOUR PROFESSIONAL IMAGE, by Stephanie Petersen. While a bit outdated (1995) the latter book has wonderful sketches of different looks and provides good, solid advice.
Rating: Summary: Dress Smart, Look Smart, Be Smart Review: This book in an invaluable resource for the career gal such as myself who sometimes feels just a little bit overwhelmed when faced with all the fashion options out there. Are shoulderpads out? Are scarves too fussy? Does pink say "I'm an empowered woman" or "I'm a stupid little girl"? I'm not able to think for myself, so I'm so happy that Joanna Nicholson has done the thinking for me about what I should be wearing... Honestly, I feel like she's my best girlfriend sometimes. She's so warm and friendly, and she looks so pretty in the picture of herself on the dustjacket of the book. She has such a snappy way with words that I often find myself quoting her silently to myself as I go about my daily routine, like I'll be feeding my cat and I'll think to myself "A big yes to neutrals is a big no to boredom." Before I read this book, I had so much trouble picking out clothes. I've even gotten fired from jobs because of inappropriate attire. It truly is a brilliant read.
Rating: Summary: Dressing Smart in the New Millennium Review: This is the first time I've ever written a review, just like it's the first time I'll sit right down and order more copies of a book I just read as gifts for my friends. It's truly an easy (and fun!) book to read, and the tips given in the book are easy to implement for instant results. I'd recommend it to any woman who wants to look her best without "making a career" of it. Fun and fast way to dress for success in this day of "business casual." Highly recommmended!
