Summary: Remarkably Effective Advice
Review: Hernacki's book starts out with the highest of pretensions, and I was admittedly skeptical. How can a sub-100 page book provide the "ultimate secret"? The book is slim (I read the book in less than one hour), but I have been digesting the contents of the book, and applying the principles for the past few weeks with remarkable results.

The principle underlying the book can be succinctly stated:

You must be willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish what you want

Some qualifiers:

(1) Hernacki notes that you may ultimately not need to do very much to accomplish your goals, but you must be mentally willing to do anything it takes. For example, you may not need to move to New York City and uproot your family to become an investment banker, but you must be willing to do anything that it takes to accomplish your goal, including taking risks.

(2) In order to be willing to do anything it takes, you should feel that you are actively controlling your life. You should feel responsible for how things are today, and how they will be tomorrow.

(3) You must have a clear sense of your objective. Rather than say you want to be a millionaire describe how you are going to get there. Have an actionable goal and sub-goals if needed.

(4) View your commitment to your goal not as a self-imposed burden, but a "feeling of confidence" that you will continue to pursue the goal, because that is what you want.

(5) Thoughts (including a desire to do whatever it takes) attract their physical equivalent. For example, if you think you are hungry, then you'll have a Whopper in your hand before you know it.

(6) There is a virtuous cycle in attaining your goal. Once you get closer to your goal, the easier the task becomes.

(7) Keep an open mind, and believe that you can achieve your goal.

Overall worth purchasing, and if you apply the above principles you may see similar changes in your life as I have seen in mine.

Summary: Disappointing
Review: I had such high hopes for this book because the principle it espouses is valid and very useful and for many people will be an eye-opener. When the author uses examples to show how people sabotage or build their own success, it works well. The biggest problem is that it is really a long article or pamphlet stretched to short-book length with larger print and lots of blank pages adding to the page count. Also some of the material on how the principle works comes across as contrived as if trying to sound scientific, which is unnecessary. Perhaps what might been more informative and useful would have been a discussion of the psychological undepinnings of the principle. There is some interesting writing and research on forming success attitudes and making commitments which could have been incorporated and applied to give it more substance.

People do need to know about the principle and the commitment necessary to make any achievement possible. In October 2001 there will be a new edition. I hope this upcoming volume does more justice to this fascinating topic.

Summary: I knew that... Who doesn't know that?
Review: I once read that the greatest secret to success is knowing what you want, know what it will cosy, and be willing to pay that price. I was given this book as a gift, from someone who purchased for 25 cents at a tag sale. Honestly, had I or anyone paid full price for this book, I would really be upset. As it was, 25 cents was just about a fare price.

After reading the book, I wonder if those positive reviews are because people really didn't know this common sense idea? Could it be that no one wants to admit they actually paid for a book that pretty much points out the obvious?

My hat is off to the author for coming up with such a creative title. I would think that anyone who is not happy with their current situation would jump at this book.

The real Ultimate Secret is that you already know this, and you haven't taken action and put it to use.

Hey, I could have had a V8...

Summary: Now You Know the Secret!
Review: I'm not being completely snide when I say this book would probably be most interesting to those who get their financial advice from Suze Orman, their view of history from Joseph Campbell and their religious training from Deepak Chopra. For once, I'd like one of these people with the "answer to everything" to be more than a motivational speaker or writer (why not trying curing cancer?). I can't imagine why he hasn't shown up on a PBS special (or did I miss him?). On the plus side, he at least makes his book somewhat enjoyable and it's probably not a completely waste of time to read the book and find some inspiration.

Summary: A different angle at making Law of Attract. more effective
Review: Many of the reviewers who gave a low rating might have read the principles from a more limiting perspective, and I can see how that might happen. If most of the material that they had read before this one was based more on pragmatic everyday goal-setting advice, they just really won't catch on.
After reading this book over three years ago, and then reading material on Quantum physics-mind connection, as well as the effects of thoughts and emotionalized focus on the actual physical manifestation of things, I got the message on the second read.

I loved not only Hernacki's personal story, but also the way he presented the concepts of how you can easily block the outpicturing of your goals by having a hesitant, or worse, attitude relating to taking steps toward the goal.

If I could sum up the reason why I mention in my listmania list why this is unusual among metaphysical books, it's in the way he instructs how to avoid projecting mental blockers into the Universe (which affect physical reality). These blockages are caused by you picturing in your mind possible painful steps you think you might have to take toward your objective, and then putting your foot down refusing to do that one possibly painful thing. The Law of Attraction is neutral, and pays attention to any hesitant energy.
If you emotionally agree to yourself that you are - body, mind, and soul - willing to do *anything*, you most likely won't have to do *most of the work* toward your goal. It's a paradox.
It's worth reading the book to elaborate for you what I'm summarizing here. He includes quotes by Emerson, and the really good quote by Goethe (Providence moves with you when you show boldness), to help support his points.
