Rating: Summary: Rare. Dangerous. Sharp. Funny. Good. Life Giving. Review: As a GenXer I knew I had to be a kind and sensitive husband. So Sheila and I read MANY books on building a strong marriage... most of them had cover art featuring flowers, or couples holding hands as they walked on the beach. The exhausted couple on the cover of this book caught my attention. The last thing I wanted to do was read another marriage book - but after confessing a habit with online porn I needed real help... not pablum. We read REFORMING MARRIAGE outloud together. Every page had practical punch. I wish I would have known this before we got married. Sheila and I have been married for 12 years now. Rare is the book that makes my 'Top-20-of-all-time' list. This one actually made it into the top five. Raw power in as few words as possible. I recommend it often. Read it. WARNING: contains explicitly Biblical content
Rating: Summary: Biblical principles, practical applications Review: Doug Wilson offers wise advice for couples in this wonderful book. He cuts right to the core of the issues, dealing with headship and marriage roles, straight from the beginning. From there he works in practical applications, such as a Biblical view of sex, birth control, and divorce. And all of it is written in a wonderfully eloquent style. I was quite edified by this volume, and I would highly recommend it to married couples and singles alike.
Rating: Summary: A must read for anyone considering marriage! Review: I highly recommend Douglas Wilson's book on Reforming Marriage. It will prove to be a great read for couples who have been married for 50 years and for those about to enter this wonderful covenant before God. Wilson cuts through the garbage that the world and much of contemporary evangelicalism has left in the field of marriage counselling. His thorough exegesis of key biblical passages and his straightforward style make this book an easy, entertaining and informative read. It is a book that I and my wife will read again and again. I also highly recommend any of the other books in Wilson's family series. Especially "Fidelity" which is the BEST book on the subject. ALL MEN should read this book, married or not.

Rating: Summary: Great Book, but not for the spiritually lazy Review: If you really want to know how to build a marriage that honors God, you should read Reforming Marriage. Doug Wilson does a masterful job of describing the roles of the husband and wife and God's purpose for each. But this book isn't for the faint of heart or the spiritually lazy. Reforming Marriage is no 12-step plan for a successful marriage by any stretch of the imagination. Wilson doesn't claim that it is either. He recognizes (and eloquently writes) that a godly marriage is based upon a close relationship with God. I give away the book when I say this, so don't be disappointed if you were looking for some magical words or steps to solve all of your problems, but do read Reforming Marriage! It is a great book that teaches directly from the word of God.
Rating: Summary: The Finest Marriage Book Ever Written Review: In just over 100 pages, Wilson manages to do what thousands of pages of the normal pablum never get done: explain clearly what marriage is in God's eyes; the exact inter-relationship between headship, service and love; and how to put things on track from the beginning (or put them back on track if need be). Wilson's deep understanding of the practical outworking of covenants shines through every (often-humorous) paragraph, and his solidly-rooted theology keeps everything completely Christ-centered. Yet while every theologian should read Reforming Marriage, this is not a book written for theologians: it is a book for every Christian. Your systematic theology prof and your seemingly-retarded teenager will draw equally well from its wisdom. That's quite a feat; and an accomplishment carried out by few so well or as consistently as by Wilson. Praise God that he carries it out with this particularly vital topic.
Rating: Summary: A MUST HAVE FOR EVERY WIFE Review: In this book Douglas Wilson sets aside prevailing cultural standards and boldly addresses the Biblical standard of Christian marriage and the role of a Christian husband and a wife. He discusses headship and authority, different responsibilities/roles to be fulfilled in marriage, love, forgiveness, differences between men and women, pornography, faithfulness, Biblical view of sex, bearing children, divorce, etc. A chapter is devoted to the duties of a husband and a wife. They each have different roles, but one is not superior or inferior than the other. Just as the right shoe is not more important than the left shoe, the husband and wife are both important. If the right shoe is exchanged with the left (or vice versa), neither can fulfill its role properly. And just as a particular blade of scissors is not more important than the other, both the husband and wife are equal in WORTH but differ in ROLE, and they work together in love. After reading this book, women no longer need to cringe when they hear that "S" word: Submission. Mr. Wilson reiterates the Biblical concept of submission and explains what it means for wives to submit to their husbands as the leader and head of the family (Eph. 5:23-25). He also discusses the Biblical principle that husbands love their wife as Christ loves the church. (Most women don't have a problem submitting to a husband who loves his wife as Christ loves the church). As an unmarried reader, I find this book helpful in preparing singles (and equipping married couples) with the Biblical standard of a Christian marriage and the Biblical role of husbands and wives.
Rating: Summary: Marriage as it ought to be Review: There are certain authors and teachers I enjoy because they take me places I wouldn't go on my own. I enjoy the writer who can make me think about what I believe, challenge my assumptions and look at the world differently then before. Doug Wilson is one of those men. In this book, more than any other book on marriage that I have read, this one is scratching where we are itching. Most books look at marriage from a very individualistic perspective and are more formula driven than Biblically informed. His clarion call to seriously begin thinking about federal headship with its attendant implications for husbands and fathers is worth the price of the book alone. If you are a pastor, work with married couples, are a counselor or are just looking for some instruction on your own marriage, read this book. Get book for small group study, Sunday school class or counseling session.

Rating: Summary: A Worthy Read ! Review: This book is not just another book on the Family or Marriage issue. It is unique in that it takes the Bible and applies it very practically in the issues that peratin to Husbands and Wives. I don't agree with the social drinking stuff, but other than that it is really a worth while book to read. Good job Mr. Doug Wilson.
