Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: Congratulations to Michael and Mary Eades for this ground-breaking research and their ability to effectively communicate the most natural and correct way for humans to eat. I encountered this book during my first pregnancy when I was almost diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I was obese after the birth of that child and I embarked on the Protein Power plan three months after the birth and experienced the most outstanding wightloss without even doing any extra exercise - just simply carrying out a normal daily routine. This diet is not about weight loss it is about "weight balance". I have discovered that I can rely on my body's own hunger messages to determine when my next meal should be and I do not have hunger cravings between meals. If I have had a day when I am not very active then my body response is that I am also not very hungry. Makes sense doesn't it? Yet on the high-carb regime I was hungry all the time regardless of the amount of exercise I did. It seems my body is now getting and using the nutrients it so desperately craved. I am now pregnant for the second time and I have never felt healthier - no morning sickness, no rapid weight gain, lots of energy, and no gestational diabetes. Being of Italian decscent, I believe that my metabolism requires the extra protein and if you look at traditional pasta making in Italy, it always included plenty of eggs. The stuff they call pasta today isn't the real thing. We are the result of the over-processed, highly-marketed carbohydrate mentality that is making everyone so very sick. Thank you Drs Eades.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic sequel for the best low-carb diet Review: Drs. Michael and Mary Dan Eades drive the nail further into the coffin of the dying low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet. Rather than just rehashing material from their previous best-selling book (as so many diet authors do), the doctors provide the latest research and information that adds to the tidal wave of support for low-carb eating.
For instance, they lay to rest any dispute about the kind of diet prehistoric man lived on (it was primarily protein and good-quality fat, not grains and other carbohydrate sources).
This historical perspective is something you don't hear the high-carb advocates talk about much...because it shoots down the underlying principle behind their plans. The chapter called 'The Leaky Gut' takes you on a fascinating journey through the digestive process, and shows you how carbs and sugars destroy your gut. You'll think long and hard before you gorge on carbs again. Sunlight is also de-villainized in the chapter called 'Sunshine Superman.' Read this before you put on sunblock again. You'll also discover fascinating new information on cholesterol...especially how LDL (the bad kind) actually has a good component to it that increases on a low-carb diet. And if you think artificial sweeteners are better than regular sugar, you must read 'How Sweet it is...Not!'
The doctors also expand a bit on the 'how to' aspects of following the Protein Power Plan. They've devised new variations on it, depending on whether you want to follow it loosely or strictly. Anybody can do it, even if you don't want to give up your carbs. The book does get technical at times, but the effect is more fascinating than boring or confusing. The summaries at the end of each chapter are excellent for easy reference.
One thing I really respect about the Drs. Eades is the fact that they seem to be far ahead of the conventional medical establishment in terms of research and the practical application of that research. Critics of low-carb diets tend to focus on old and outdated studies. The Eades are very good at staying on the cutting edge, refuting the naysayers handily. The USDA food pyramid is on very shaky ground...as it should be...thanks to the courage of the Drs. Eades and other low-carb advocates.
I'm at the airport posting this review and looking forward to my long flight now that I have this book. Halfway through I simply cannot put it down. Just like my delicious cup of s o y f e e. It's a coffee substitute that's been helping me ween off caffeine since my doctor mentioned it. Made from soy it even lowered my cholesterol. Look for it online at www.s o y c o f f ee.com. Oh, gotta run or I'll miss my flight!
I've been on the Protein Power Plan for over 2 years with outstanding results, both weight-wise and health-wise. I have these two pioneering physicians to thank for it. I have met them on several occasions, and their intelligence is easily matched by their integrity and sincerity. If you're new to low-carb eating, get the Protein Power paperback and this book. If you're already on a low-carb plan, this is a must-read.
Rating: Summary: This Diet Works Review: I lost 15 of my 155 pounds during the first five weeks. That's a 10% loss. Did my skin sag and bag? Not a bit, as following the plan changes fat into muscle. Instead of sagging I "pulled up," look much slimmer and more shapely. Hunger went away within the first day or so and the diet was a breeze to follow. From day one, I felt much more energetic than I had for years. The next 15 pounds until target weight will be slower, no doubt, but decidedly doable.
I'd tried Atkins years ago, felt great but did not lose one single ounce. Not one. No-carb/high-fat diets don't work for some people. (It may be an estrogen thing.)
While carbs are "restricted" on the Protein Power Plan (PPP), you can eat enough veggies to feel full, even during Phase I when rapid weight loss generally occurs. Just stick to low-glycemic veggies. For example, three cups of broccoli contains only seven grams of carbs. So, for a woman with a small frame, a meal might consist of three ounces of chicken breast and three cups of broccoli topped with some olive oil and lemon. I found such meals quite filling. You do drink a considerable amount of water on this diet, which contributes to feeling full.
I appreciated all the good science presented in the book and the charts showing amounts of protein and carbs in different foods. Calculating a balanced PPP meal is no problem. And when I felt an urge to eat something illegal, I'd just pick up the book and take a mini-refresher course. The science is really quite motivating!
The PPP is similar to Barry Sears' wonderful Zone Diet. Sears starts you off with more carbs. In fact, so many carbs, it would to take me an hour to eat that big pile of greens. So this diet is easier for me. However, I do suggest reading both PPP and the Zone diet books. Barry Sears and the Eades are the smartest diet gurus out there and many of the more recent diets lean heavily on their research.
Rating: Summary: FROM A FAT DOUBTER TO A SLIMMER BELIEVER!!!!! Review: I went on The Protein Power Plan out of pure despiration. I read it in one sitting and thought,"What the heck! I'll give it a try!". Well, four weeks later and four less inches in my waist and 15lbs. overall less, I am a believer! I have lost inches everywhere. Just as the book said, with the redistribution of fat and muscle ratio we actually need to measure inches lost more than weight in that muscle weighs more than fat. This food plan is so, so, so easy to follow both at home and in all types of restaurants. The body chemistry Drs. Eades provides is so simple and makes so much sense I just want to know why NO ONE had ever published this miracle before. The Dr. Atkins plan of the 70's was similar but no where as complete with immediate and longterm simple explanations and directions for new health, body chemistry and the how to simply maintain this new found health and body! Many miserable and sick people could have been made happy and healthy with this simple message of proper eating. I truly believe that I could "Preach the Gospel of the Protein Power Plan" simply because of what it has done for me in my life already. May we all reach out to those around us who we see suffering just as we have. The new body size and shape is a great advertisement as well as the new zest for living and feeling good. DRS. EADES, I CAN NEVER THANK YOU BOTH ENOUGH FOR SHARING WITH ME THIS SECRET OF NEW FOUND HEALTH, PROPER EATING AND BRING ABLE TO RECAPTURE THE YOUTHFUL VIGOR THAT I THOUGHT WAS GONE FOREVER!!!! God Bless You Both!
Rating: Summary: The Plan Works!! Review: I'm a 40-something borderline Type II diabetic and have had a tendency toward elevated serum cholesterol. A year and a half ago, I read Protein Power and went on the plan. For 10 years, I had been following a low fat, low meat, hi carb diet, and was frustrated that my blood sugar levels were increasing and my serum cholesterol was hovering in the 220-250 range. And I had given up meats, eggs and other foods high in sat fats!! I'm not at all overweight, and am unable to exercise on a regular basis. The 1st week to ten days of being on the Plan were quite significant. Within 3 days, my blood sugars were down 30-35% and just over normal ranges. But as my body was adjusting to a much reduced carbohydrate intake, I experienced some aching in my legs and some other side effects...amazingly, they are all discussed in the book and are considered normal. Dietary supplements ease the effects quite well. Over time, my cholesterol has dropped to the 200-205 range. But the book is only as good as the plan it espouses. And by all counts, the low carb plan works well for me. And my team of doctors and dieticians at the world reknown diabetes clinic I attend have come to accept my commitment and can't argue with the results...but as of yet, they're loathe to jump on the Protein Power bandwagon. I insist upon regular blood tests to monitor my kidney and liver functions for normalcy; I would discontinue the plan if I were placing my health in any danger. Following any diet regimen requires sacrifice and commitment. With Protein Power, I've tended to virtually eliminate certain hi-carb food groups such as pastas, breads, potatoes, etc. because the portion one can eat is really quite meager, and I intake my daily carb quota through other foods. Of all these hi-carb items, I only miss the breads; giving up the others required an adjustment, but I'm past that. Now I get to eat cheeses, meats, eggs and other wonderful items I shunned before on the low fat diets. I'm grateful to the Eades for advancing this plan, and feel that until I stop feeling well or my physicians can adequately explain why I shouldn't be following this regimen, I'll continue to do so.
Rating: Summary: If this plan is not working, you're cheating! Review: I've lost 17 lbs since Feb 6. I am skeptical about the long term effects of this diet with all the hype and all, but the pounds are absolutely melting off before my eyes and that definately feels good! There is so much propaganda for overweight people, with "this" plan and "that" plan supposedly the "best", no wonder we're confused about what to believe! Atkins' book seems a little extreme and this one is easier to follow. I have about 20 lbs to go and I'm sure that this diet and in the end a loss of 35 lbs is a lot healthier than eating like this for as long as it takes. Beware though, don't cheat, figuring healthy things like orange juice and fruit won't hurt you; you'll be sorry when you hit the scales. Time will pass by anyway, and I'd rather be 35 lbs lighter when it does! Do yourself a favor and try it.
Rating: Summary: This Eating Plan Works! Review: My husband and I have been following the Protein Power diet for 2 1/2 months now. We feel better, look better and don't miss carbs or sugar at all! My husband has lost 24 pounds and he looks and feels great. I have followed the plan along with him although weight loss was not my goal. I can eat all the things that I used to avoid eating and I can maintain my weight without gaining. It's wonderful! No more dreading those fattening business lunches/dinners. I just skip the carbs and eat the filling proteins and salads! We're never hungry and we can still enjoy our vodka and diet tonic or glass of wine. We are just amazed that you can lose weight yet eat so well! One thing that works for us is going off the diet every two weeks or so- just for a weekend. This is a recommendation of the "New Mayo Clinic Diet" (check the internet, but no connection to the Mayo Clinic) which is a stricter version of the low carb diet. This way, your body doesn't adjust to the low carb plan so that weight loss slows. You may gain a pound or two over the "diet holiday" but start losing faster once you go back on. It seems to jump start the weight loss. If this plan doesn't work for you, you're not following it closely enough. However, keep in mind that if you eat blocks of cheese and pounds of meat every day, you are not following the plan and will not lose. Balance your diet and you'll do just fine!
Rating: Summary: Good ! Review: My wife and I purchased this book and began our eating habit change on April 15, 2001. I won't call it a diet because it is more than than. It is a total change in your conception of the foods you need to eat. Be prepared to spend a little more on groceries when you embark on the plan. By April 15, 2002, I had dropped 72 pounds and my wife had dropped 34 (I had more to drop than she did). Since then we have regressed a little but a return to plan principles has reversed the negative effect of that transgression. After all, who needs the carbs? You only do if you are working at a VERY physically demanding job. Otherwise, the carbs go to flab.
Rating: Summary: Excellent plan for most Review: Not very pratical unless you are harcore into a diet. I would reccomend The South Beach Diet instead.
Rating: Summary: AMAZING Review: The Eades have done their research and have years of experience in the field of nutrition but specifically the low carb, high protein weight management program. This program is something you can live with for a lifetime. At the beginning of the program you are very limited on carbs and mostly green leafy vegetables, especially if you have alot of weight to lose but as you get closer to your goal the grams of carbs are increased. This leads the way to a healthier lifestyle and the hope that you can still have a normal life. The Eades explain the high protein regiment and it all makes so much sense. They do a very good job of explaining the "insulin resistance" that most overweight people have encountered. I have been on the program for 1 month and already feel the energy rising and the cravings dwindling. I have along way to go but I am confident that if I follow this plan one day at a time, one lost pound at a time, I will be happier and healthier than I have been in the last 20 years.
