Summary: Good little knife fighting book!
Review: I think that this little book is a great place for someone that wants to learn a little knife fighting. I enjoyed this book and learned some stuff to boot. Great simple instructions from a guy(Don Pentecost)whose been there(Folsom Prison). This is knife fighting streamlined to work. No stupid stuff. Just aggresion, a blade and the will to live. It was on the short side. But its long enough to get its message across. Bravo

Summary: A Good Beginning to Your Knife Fighting Training
Review: I was skeptical about how much information would come from so few pages. To my surprise, I liked it. The book gives you a no nonsense approach that can be integrated in your current training. Definitely worth being in your library!!

Summary: The Secret to Knife Fighting
Review: I've read Put 'Em Down, Take 'Em Out! as well as pretty much EVERY other "knife fighting" book that's been published.

Every single LEGITIMATE self defense book teaches the following things:

The "SECRET" to knife fighting and staying alive is to BE AWARE!!! Be aware of every nuance of your surroundings, the people who can be potential attackers, what can be used as a weapon, the most advantageous place and angle for someone to attack you from, a motive - on the street, whether it be the Rolex on your wrist, your car, your woman or just looking like easy prey. Arm yourself with this information, avoid or minimize the opportunity of an attack and you're more likely to avoid getting attacked. Be prepared to ESCAPE from danger.

The second "SECRET" is to be mentally prepared to do WHATEVER it takes to protect yourself or loved ones. Can you kill someone, can you gouge an eye, bite a face, grab and twist body parts? Stab another human being, shoot them? When attacked with a knife, some cutsie pie, two fingered spinning nose flick isn't going to save your [hide].

This book deals with being in a situation where you can't avoid attack. Alot of the technique is down and dirty, nothing to lose, animal instinct. In a prison situation, there aren't as many loptions like those in a street attack situation.
On the street, hand over your watch, run or whatever it takes to stay alive. Then if there's no choice, take em out.

Summary: what a crock!
Review: It's good to see someone who's been paroled be productive.Don't waste your time on what is basically a pamplet by a guy trying to sell books by offering "jailhouse knifefighting" techniques.Even his grip is all wrong-if you stabbed someone with his preferred grip there's a good chance of losing some of your own fingers.Let's face it:if he really knew from experience what works in jail he'd still be inside. There is no technique to the knife/dirk/edge in jail;all that is required is the will to attack.Anyone should know that about 95% of knife fighting in jail is basically coming up and sticking someone in the back(repeatedly if possible).Pentecost even has the nerve to "debunk" other types of knife fighting. If it comes down to knife fighting either run, pick up something as the equalizer,or carry a gun.If you want a better book on knife fighting get "Sevillian Steel" by James Loriega.

Summary: basically, shows just one technique
Review: Its a simple book, shows just a simple technique, two variations, and yet is a very good book. The principle of the technique shown resembles the ideas of the "Shanghai school", represented by Fairbairn and Applegate. If you have already read the classical books of that gentlemen, this little booklet will illustrate most of the ideas proposed there.

Summary: Short but good!!
Review: OK,so this is a short book and a little pricey....but the info presented is excellent. For those of you familiar with the Applegate method, stance, etc this will round out your knowledge and give you a simple "game plan." The author takes a pragmatic approach to this subject and I was particularly impressed with his section on "grips"...several high profile instructors share or have come around to his point of view. This is book for someone who wants solid/practical info on technique but who does not want to devote half his life trying to master a martial art.

Summary: Put 'Em Down,Take 'Em Out: Knife Fighting Techniques
Review: Small book, but experience, and good information that can save
your life is not sold by the pound !
Excellent, obviously written by someone with extensive experience. I've personally been in every form of violence/
self-defense related profession, and I can tell where the author is coming from.

Summary: A really good book
Review: That fact that this book is short should not be considered a negative. This book gives you some cold hard facts about knife fighting. The author tells how it's not the knife you have to fear but the MAN with the knife. Great practical advice on awareness and avoidance. Despite what "other" reviews say, the author does not talk about how tough or how good he is. Development of mental toughness is highly stressed. Something more "martial artists" should try to understand. I highly recommend this book!

Summary: A refreshing take on knifery
Review: The tactics one needs to survive a knife fight are shockingly basic. Don Pentecost did a fine job of explaining that fact. If you have had formal knife training, I suggest you discard the fancy techniques, and "get back to basics." Additionally, I further submit that you should avoid knife-fighting altogether. You will certainly live a longer life.

Mr. Pentecost points out that the chances of two people, armed with knives, both being engaged in mortal combat are slim. It is usually a very one-sided affair, and the unarmed man is at an absurdly severe disadvantage. The author is a very intelligent man. His book should be given the credit it is due.

A word of warning: think before you pull that blade. In fact, unless you are simply looking for trouble, don't carry one on you. My Grandfather told me that doing so invites compulsive action, which results in prison, dismemberment, or death (or any combination of the three).

If I could, I'd give this book 10 stars.
