Rating: Summary: A must have book for anyone living with Multiple Sclerosis Review: I was recommended by a fellow MSer to read this book, and I am so very happy that I did. It deals with our real world, living with MS, the ups and downs, trials and tribulations, the good and the bad days. I passed it on to my parents, who at the time were second guessing my abilitites, and after reading it they understood more clearly what my world is like with this shadow we have come to call Multiple Sclerosis. I hope that there is a Part Two in the works. Thank You!
Rating: Summary: Women Living with Multiple Sclerosis is a MUST READ!! Review: It is such an honor for me to be a part of this wonderful book!! And more... an honor to know Judith and the 'Froup'... If you know anyone with MS, have MS yourself, have a loved one with MS, or treat MS patients in your medical practice at all, you MUST read this book!! Totally invaluable information for everyone involved! Thank you, Judy for this enlightening, funny, wonderfully informative tribute!
Rating: Summary: Awesome and Fun Read! I can't wait to read the sequel! Review: Judith Nicholes has managed to put together a fun read which tells the stories of many women with many forms of MS and who are in varying stages of this disease, and all by way of their email conversations! The book is tremendously enlightening to family members or others who know someone who has this MonSter. I am especially touched by the courage and triumph demonstrated by the women as they carry on day to day life, finding humor where they might find sadness, and finding joy in the little things that others might forget to notice. However, what I found most inspiring was how they carry on with their lives as though having and battling with MS were an everyday occurrence, as though it were but a small annoyance that all of humanity must deal with. They quickly offer each other strategies for dealing with those annoyances, and go on with life. I say hurray for the froup! You go Girls!
Rating: Summary: Author's comments Review: Readers: "Women Living With Multiple Sclerosis" was written to share with readers the real picture of what life is like with a chronic, progressive disease. It is a collection of intimate e-mail conversations I've taken part in with twenty other women who also have MS. I met these women two years ago on one of the bulletin boards for MSers on AOL. We got together to talk about multiple sclerosis. We ended up forging an online support network where we can go for encouragement in our struggles and twenty times the joy when we overcome an obstacle. We all hope that this book will provide a measure of solidarity, peer support and information for others who have been diagnosed. We also hope that it will help doctors and other medical personnel and caregivers come to a more effective understanding of how their patients and clients live. We don't want this volume to be another example of the gloom and doom involved in life with the MonSter. We've all lived with it, some of us for more than twenty years. The key word here is "lived." We haven't given up on life or laughter or love; we try to show that in this book. We hope it will be a source of inspiration and hope in others' struggles with the MonSter. We also want to make the book a practical source of help and hope for MSers. All royalties earned by sales of "Women Living With Multiple Sclerosis" will be paid directly to various local chapters of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society for client services.
Rating: Summary: Think twice before ordering Review: The reviews cautioning the newly diagnosed against this book -- and those pointing out it represents the approach of a very particular group of women with a very particular approach to MS -- have floated to the end of the list here. I think it's worth pointing out again that if you aren't into refering to your disease as a "MonSter", and are trying to expand your horizons beyond your disease, this isn't the book to get. For those new to MS, this book may be scary: is this the only future open to me? The inspid cuteness may be as terrifying as the disbility! One thing that really bothers me is the suggestion here that people who want to understand women with MS should read this book. This is not the only face of MS. I'm glad the "froup" has helped these women. MS is a rough go, and it's good not to go it alone. But you know, faced with the choice between going solo and "froupping", I'd pick solo everytime!
Rating: Summary: The most awesome book I have read about M.S. Review: There is not much this book doesn't cover. It makes it real, from real folks with M.S. about real people with M.S. and for people with M.S. It is a very comfortable way of learning what life is like with the MonSter! Thank you Judith Lynn Nichols and the "froup"!
Rating: Summary: They've been there, done that and still survive Review: These women have a togetherness that allows them to support and assist one another totally. They discuss openly what MS is all about and do it with clarity, but more importantly with a sense of humor and spirtualism. They should be congratulated for their attitudes and companionships. A very informative and interesting book. Gives one a look into someones elses life who is perhaps less fortunate than the reader, but who does not feel sorry for herself. This book should not only be read by those who have MS, but is truly informative to those of us who do not, but may know someone who does have this MonSter.
Rating: Summary: The main theme is LIVING! Review: This book deals with day to day life problems, with the main point being LIVING! Rather than just another "disease of the week" tragedia, Judy Lynn and her "froup" tell it like it is. If you're looking for high drama, you won't find it here. What you WILL find is a book about how ordinary people, living ordinary lives, make their lives "do-able" in sometimes EXTRAordinary ways. I wish there had been something like this book around when I was seeking answers to my questions back when I was newly diagnosed. It would have saved me a lot of the fear that came from reading some of the misinformation that is still, unfortunately, out there. It's not "gloom and doom", it's not "sweetness and light", it's factual, funny, sad, and presents life with MS in the matter of fact way that this "froup" deals with it all. Thank you Judy-Lynn and online sisters! More, please?
Rating: Summary: Not for the Newly Diagnosed Review: This book is a little outdated concerning treatment and prognosis and is rather depressing. it is good in the fact that especially in the diagnosis istory of each woman, probably everyone going through or having just gone through the process of being diagnosed with MS will find at least one similarity to their story and realize, I am not the only one. But for those new to MS, I would stop there. It portrays a lot of worse case scenarios that those just digesting this disease don't really need to focus on, and there have been advances in treatment since this book was published. If newly diagnosed, wait a few years to read this one. A good one for the new is margaret Blackstones Surviving the First Year or even "Fall Down Laughing: How Suiggy caught Ms and didn't tell"
Rating: Summary: Can't be recommended highly enough! Review: This book is amazing. It is a book that every woman living with MS should have in their home library. I didn't want the book to end. I will probably refer to it over and over in the future. It has already helped me with some current struggles I'm going through. Thank you so much Judy Nichols and the members of the "Froup".
