Rating: Summary: An invaluable tool for every midlife couple. Review: Dr. Polston's book belongs in the libraries of people who are striving to become the most they can -- as individuals, couples, parents, and as members of the human community. The book is a guide to learning the art of living well through understanding the healing power and growth power of loving relationships. The book has much to offer a person who is beginning his/her journey to self-awareness in a relationship as well as those who have experienced and overcome the trials life tosses at couples -- growth never stops, which is a major message of this fine, articluate, and accessible work.
Rating: Summary: The real stuff - no phoney baloney Review: I am so sick of reading books that I can't understand, not because I'm stupid, but because every Ph. D. thinks he/she has to show everyone how many three and four-syllable words they can fit into a sentence. The thinking is not clear or logical so the thought gets fuzzy. Polston and Galant write for EVERYMAN/WOMAN, clearly, concisely. with well organized material that's a snap to grasp. Ladies, get this for you and your husband for the holidays. Life can be sweeter!
Rating: Summary: I've been there, done that, and it works! Review: I have devoted a major part of the last several years of my life to the improvement of my marriage, as my husband and I have experienced his retirement and the empty nest. It has become my passion. I've read everything I could find on these subjects, conducted studies, interviewed multitudes of couples, run groups, spoken to organizations large and small, written articles, and now this book. It has been an interesting journey. There is much useful information, encouragement and guidance in the pages of this book. Know that all the suggestions in Loving Midlife Marriage have been tried out by yours truly, just as a cookbook author would test all of her recipes. They helped us--they can help you. We've been there, done that, and it works! My wish is that your journey through this new phase of your lives will be a long and fruitful one, filled with compassion, good cheer and love.
Rating: Summary: This has really helped me deal with my wife! Review: I retired and was lost. My wife didn't know what to do--I kind of hung around the house and we both got on eachother's nerves. She picked up Loving Midlife Marriage at our local bookstore and started to involve me in some of the exercises.I don't believe in all this psych stuff but went along just to please her. To both of our surprises some changes started to happen--in other words--the book has really helped us and our marriage. To anyone going through this difficult time, I highly recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: Thank you Dr. Polston Review: Loving Midlife Marriage has been very helpful to us. As a couple in our 50's, we are dealing with empty nest and upcoming retirement problems. The chapter on "Seven Marital Themes and the Empty Nest Marriage" was especially meaningful. The rehearsals and testimonials elevate Loving Midlife Marriage above the typical dry "self-help/how to" book. Specific solutions were given to reoccurring, but seemingly unsolvable problems. Our retired friends were particularly impressed with the book's perceptive analysis of what work and retirement mean to husbands and wives. It will definitely help us prepare for that time in our lives. Thank you Dr. Polston! Francie and Jerry Levin, Baltimore, Maryland
