Rating: Summary: "What to expect" leaves you still expecting! Review: Although the title promised a great deal of information, I was very disappointed. Most of the chapters do not go indepth enough to really inform and comfort. It is missing a great deal of information that a well versed insulin dependent diabetic woman would want and expect to know/learn. For example, it doesn't mention the use of insuln pump therapy, the use of Humulog insulin nor the rotation of injection sites in pregnancy...it just didn't do it for me. This book is the type you woud find on a Dr. office waiting room table..just to browse through, not used for heavy duty info. Overall, it would be excellent for an expecting woman to use this book to aid her in questioning her Doctors further...not as an indepth source alone.
Rating: Summary: This was my first book and was very helpful! Review: I am the editor of Diabetic Mommy Online Magazine - DiabeticMommy.com
I am a type 2 diabetic, and had to start insulin when I got pregnant with my son. At that time I felt there was little information on pregnancy and diabetes and this little book was a God-send.
I was not a diabetes expert by any means, so this booklet was great for giving me a frame of reference for all the new information that was suddently being shoved in my direction. When you are a newly pregnant diabetic, many times you can find yourself overwhelmed by all the information they want you to learn NOW. As time passed, I realized much of the information I was getting in kits, booklets, pamphlets and information sheets was just the same information rehashed over and over. The reason why I was able to mentally organize the information and stop feeling like I was in another country when it came to diabetes terms was because of this book.
I've looked at the other reviews and see that many of the negative reviews came from type 1 diabetics. And, I can understand why they would feel this way. They most likely have lived most of their life with this disease, and this little booklet goes over a lot of stuff they already know.
This is a little book, about 75 pages. It contains 10 brief chapters and sections with the following titles:
Diabetes, Pregnancy & You
How Your Baby Develops
What to Expect in Nine Months
Diabetes During Pregnancy
Insulin Therapy
Nutrition, Diabetes, and Pregnancy
Exercise, Diabetes, and Pregnancy
Monitoring Your Diabetes
Problems Associated with Diabetes
More About Pregnancy
Tests to Expect During Your Pregnancy
Labor and Delivery
Birth Control
Making the Choice

Rating: Summary: All Fluff Review: I purchased this book knowing that one person had rated it poorly... however without any other reviews, I took a chance. I agree with the first rater, this book is "basic".... it gives more detail on what every pregnant woman should do while pregnant... and what all the books on pregnancy already suggest. The only chapter that I found beneficial for me with gestational diabetes was the chapter on how the different insulins work within the human body. Other than that, the place that I found the best info. for gestational diabetes was on parentsplace.com message boards.... topic (pregnant and diabetic). Someone needs to write a good informative book for women with GD.
Rating: Summary: Minimal benefits for gestational diabetic patients Review: I purchased this book knowing that one person had rated it poorly... however without any other reviews, I took a chance. Rating: Summary: All Fluff Review: I started to read this book, then decided to skim, then decided to quit. It is all fluff. If you want a good book with meaty infomation, read Medical Management of Pregnancy Complicated Diabetes published by the ADA.
Rating: Summary: Very elementary Review: I was very disappointed. This book contained only the most basic information, and I did not find it to be helpful at all. It does not live up to it's title.
Rating: Summary: Very elementary Review: This books title is very promising but it doesn't follow through. It contains good basic information but almost nothing on the potential risks of high blood sugar during pregnancy. There is also no information on reasons that your doctor might want to deliver early or other special needs that a woman with type 1 diabetes might want to consider when planning her delivery.
