Rating: Summary: Awesome Book For Hope And Help ! Review: I first learned about this book in a support group at McLean Hospital. It was recommended to me by the facilitator because my depression was deepening and I was losing hope that I would ever get better. I was even thinking about suicide. I decided to get the book because I learned that Doctor Phillip Isenberg from that hospital wrote the Foreword for it. I also learned that authors Doctor Demitri Papolos and Doctor Donald Klein recommend it as well. I am so grateful that my support group facilitator brought this book to my attention. People say the author's formula is simple, but that is why I love it. It is the simplicity of it that keeps me going. When I'm really depressed, I can't deal with anything complicated. That's what depression does to me. I find it hard to think straight. The author's easy steps keep me focused on everything I need to do. I usually can't focus on much else. Mostly, however, this book has given me hope. It is a book that I read every time I feel I can't face another day. Inspiration and hope is what keeps patients like me going when nothing else seems to be working. I loved this book and recommend it to anyone who is depressed. It might not change your life overnight, but it has kept me alive during my most difficult times.
Rating: Summary: Winning the Battle? Review: I found this book misleading, it makes the reader believe that Bipolar Disorder is easy to cure if you follow a few simple steps. For those of us, who have close relatives who suffer the disease and have to endure it, this book is an insult. Where is the maelstrom where the whole family is thrown during the manic pahses? Where is the dispair of the patient during the depressive periods? Where is the fight to convince the patient, who is either a god or scum, to seek help? There is nothing "romantic" in this illness, bad wheather brings depression, good whether brings mania, with short intervals in between. And the solution is not around the corner for everyone. This comment is also a criticism to the lack of responsibility of the editors, who chose to publish it.
Rating: Summary: Wish I had this books years ago. Review: I found this book to be enlightening and would like to praise Bob and Melissa for their candidness. Knowing what I know now may have helped me years ago with a favorite relative who was suffering from this disorder. Chapter 10, "The Masks We Wear", certainly opened my eyes and now I realize what was really happening for so many years. Bob's formula may not work for everyone, but isn't anything worth a try? There are so many treatments out there that one isn't going to work for everyone, but at least this gives you something to go by. And Melissa's undying love and support was by far the biggest factor in his recovery. If only we all could have our own 'silent knight'. I would encourage anyone with a family member suffering from bipolar disorder to read this book. It will give you insight into the disorder and also give you the hope that is part of everyone's basic needs. Thanks Bob and Melissa.
Rating: Summary: Inspiring and hopeful for everyone! Review: I found this book to be inspiring and hopeful for anyone and everyone, despite the challenge he or she is facing. "Win the Battle" brings to light the strength of the human spirit and the profound effect of love. Bob and Melissa's book helped me to understand where my family members were coming from in fighting bipolar disorder. It helped me become more compassionate and understanding instead of resentful and angry. Thank you Bob and Melissa!
Rating: Summary: For Supporters and Family too, not just for sufferers! Review: I have known my wife for many years and have tried to support her as best I can while she has suffered from depression. Although I have educated myself on many aspects of this disease and how it effects her, I have not until now found suitable information on how to understand, cope and better support her through her most difficult times. After reading Win the Battle... I was left with a better understanding of how to help my wifes condition through my own actions. This book contains sections written by the authors wife, where she shares her experiences, wisdom and perspective on dealing with her spouses' condition. This book is an invaluable addition to anyones library that suffers from, supports, or loves a person, with depression or manic-depression
Rating: Summary: Inspiring and Insightful, this is a book we should all read. Review: I wish so much that this book had been written when I was first diagnosed with depression - Bob Olson's story would have been worth more than a hundred visits to the therapist's office. Instead of laboring under the unshakable reality of being a clinically depressed individual, I believe this book could have spurred me on to achieve balanced mental health. Although I have already become a "success story" through medication, part one of "Win The Battle" is wonderfully inspiring, and I believe it will be to anyone who has been confronted with obstacles in life, whether they be mental/health, personal, monetary or other. Part two is especially valuable; in it's forthright openness and insight into the depressive mind. It simply must be read by anyone with depression, bipolar disorder and people working and living with these individuals.
Rating: Summary: Simplistic, egocentric, poorly written Review: My prior review of this book was more current than many included here, but is now missing. Perhaps negative reviews of books hurts sales for Amazon.com.? Also, the "editorial reviews" for this book were written by the author and the publisher. Real objective! By the way, it was the correct medicine that cured Olson's depression, not "his steps." He says so himself in the book. Incidently, I've suffered from severe depression for five years, and I know the difference the right medication can make.

Rating: Summary: Have to agree nothing new here Review: recently diagnosed bipolar I started reading all the books I could get my hands on. This book really offered me nothing. He kept talking about steps but, when you're stuck way deep in a depression some just can't take those steps, and the same is true if you're on a manic high.. I do have a question though...if he was so depressed how was it that he could get up, take his wife to work, go back and get her for lunch, then go back to pick her up after she got off. when I'm depressed I can't even take my daughter to school.
Rating: Summary: A first aid kit!!! Review: Thank God there are people like Bob out there to share their horror and glory stories. This book is a keeper for anyone that knows anyone with depression. Its a first aid kit. Get-it! Read-it! keep-it! Or Pass it on! But I hardly doubt you'll want to.
