Rating: Summary: Not what I was expecting while "expecting" Review: As a new mother-to-be, my goal was to learn how to bond with my unborn child in a healthy manner so as to get a jumpstart on parenthood. The Secret Life of the Unborn Child speaks direclty to the psychological and biological challenges that affect the unborn child. There are several studies which describe the effects of trauma, stress and neglect on the mother and child, both during the pregnancy and the delivery. The results of these traumas have shown to cause deep seeded psychological and emotional problems for your child, carrying on into adulthood. It's not the "feel-good" bonding information I was so looking forward to reading.
Rating: Summary: Superb! Review: As an OB/GYN, this book is required reading for all of my pregnant patients as well as for those thinking of starting a family. Any physician who is up to date with current peer-reviewed literature in the realm of prenatal psychology would know the value of Dr. Verny's book and his work. ...
Rating: Summary: Not at all what I was expecting! Twisted science! Review: I bought this book thinking that it would be fascinating! I read online reviews that made it seem credible. Unfortunately, many of these reviewers did not have a background in psychology but I do. I was disappointed with this author's ludicrous claims and sloppy scholarship. Some claims are loosely supported by actual studies with some validity while other claims have no valid or reliable experiments/studies to back them up. For example, Verny claims that babies that are induced are more prone to sexual sadism and masochistic behavior! He cites no study to back up this ridiculous claim! Also, Verny equates emotional health with the personality traits of openness and extroversion. To suggest that a child who is shy and introverted is maladjusted is bad psychology. Personality theory has proven that these can be innate and inborn traits. My complaints go on... PLEASE, DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS BOOK. It's muddy...some valid claims mixed with very stupid ones. It's an example of how someone with "M.D" at the end of his/her name can sell a book that the layperson believes due to the author's credentials. However, I can assure you that my graduate school professors would have given this research writer a D.
Rating: Summary: packed with interesting facts! Review: I thought this book was great. It gives in depth knowledge of how mom's emotions, anxieties etc. can effect the fetus. Also important are the effects of the father's relationship with the fetus. This is usually lost in research, but this author has many case studies relating the importance of how pregnancy is percieved by all involved is basically how the baby's personality will probably be shaped. Unlike Jungian theroy, (Children do not form personality traits until toddlerhood)the author suggests that the fetus is affected and aware of it's environment from as early as perhaps 4 months gestation. a fascinating book, I highly recommed this to any expecting parent. It is also written in a very easy to read, non text book fashion.
Rating: Summary: Splendid Experience Review: I was fortunate that a dear friend lovingly packaged & sent this, when she learned of my pregnancy. This book had more impact on me, than any other baby-book I read. It influenced & enhanced the experience of my pregnancy & helped to guide my attitude & behavior even through difficult events that occurred during gestation. It is written from the perspective of love & I believe it contributed significantly to the strong bond that I have with my daughter. I still read it occasionally & find it useful in determining my approach to parenting today. I'm so pleased to have read this book.

Rating: Summary: Peace on earth begins with peace at birth Review: Kelly and Dr. Verney's book was introduced to me five years ago and it was life changing. I wish I'd read this book twenty-five years prior when I was birthing my first baby. I read this book after twenty years of working to improve social service and educational systems and feeling like we just aren't getting to the real causes of dysfunctions. This book was instrumental in leading me to healing my own birth trauma and moving into my present work in prenatal and birth therapy and midwifery. Dr. Verney and Kelly are brilliant, ahead of his time. This book should be mandatory reading for every profession that attempts to work with children---obstetricians, pediatricians, teachers, as well as lawmakers and hospital administrators. If read and understood by those in power of medicalized birth (obstetricians, hospitals, and politicians) who could support birthing women and men in a different way, we as a society could create profound peace in our homes and communities, and in the world. www.BabiesRemberBirth.com

Rating: Summary: This book helped me to birth a happy, healthy baby boy! Review: This book helped me to realize the profound connection my baby had with me during pregnancy. Realizing that not only my actions, but my thoughts, could affect my baby was instrumental in creating a happy, healthy baby boy! This book shares the knowledge that fetuses are miraculously learning every moment of gestation and how we can positively influence that crucial part of life.
