Review: Torey Hayden's, Somebody Else's Kids is a very good book with alot of ideas and points that anyone going into special education or wants to work with troubled kids should read. I really enjoyed this book becasue it emcompasses an actual plot to follow and at the same time entails stong ideas about surviving in an environment of troubled kids. The teacher is very true to her students by never giving up on them. She finds joy in each child and gives them the support they need. It is a great book to read.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Lori Review: Torey was--and is--a magnificent, talented, caring teacher. She did her best and them some for every child she taught, and her work with the children in this books is no exception.Of the four children, I found 7-year-old Lori Sjokheim to be the most appealing. She was so bright, so pretty, so kind-hearted and perceptive. In short, she was so sweet and appealing. She had a charisma about her that others could not resist (witness her influence on Tomaso and Boo). It's terrible that severe abuse had disabled her, destroying her capacity to learn to read and write. It's no less terrible that she was stuck with a regular teacher who was convinced that she was just lazy and stubborn. (If you ask me, Edna Thorsen is every struggling child's nightmare!)I applaud Torey for the help she struggled so hard to give Lori. All in all, I believe that the school system failed her big time. In fact, it failed all the children. The purpose of PL94142 was not to dump all children with disabilities in regular classrooms and, in effect, to leave them to drown, and that's just what that particular school system did. Some children need special-ed facilities because the regular classroom cannot meet their needs. A continuum of services should have been kept available. Lori needed more than a half-hour resource work a day--she also needed accommodations and modifications in the regular classroom and an understanding teacher who recognized both her intelligence and the effort she was making. And she should have allowed to progress to the next grade level, while continuing to receive special help.

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Somebody Else's Kids Review: When i found out i had to read a book for my education class, i groaned in disapproval and dismay. I was never fond of reading unless i got to choose what book i was to read. I chose Somebody Else's Kids by Torey L. Hayden because it seemed closest to my desired major, teaching special ed. The book was wonderful. It really shows the other side of teaching often not shown today. Today's schools are shown with pictures of teachers leaning over children smiling and having a wonderful time. School is not like that, and Hayden shows that although it may be rough, anything is possible. We cannot turn our backs on children in need. Hayden shows it just takes time and patience and everything will work out and both teachers and students will benefit.
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Pretty Good Review: While I didn't enjoy this book as much as some of the other Torey Hayden books I've read, I did like this book. The troubled children in this book were lovable and as always, Torey worked miracles with them. I really felt her love for them. My favorite of the children was the autistic Boo. Read this book - you won't regret it.
