Summary: Soothing Support in Plain English
Review: What can you say about a book that is endorsed by the leading authority in the field and is yet written in a manner that even a non-science type like me found 100 percent accessible? It's about time someone filled this gap!! This book gave us the information we needed, in beautifully written, plain English, to both get our son the treatment he needed and to live with the allergies it was finally determined he had. Since both my husband and I have an intolerance to dairy we were told that my son's excessive vomiting was due to an intolerance to dairy. After reading The Parent's Guide, I learned that his symptoms were consistent with those of an allergic reaction. Armed with this knowledge, we were ready to do battle with the managed care gatekeepers and demand that he see a specialist. The allergist we saw found that our son is indeed allergic to dairy along with several other foods. And thanks to this book, I understood the process the doctors took my son through to come to this conclusion. When given the diagnosis we felt somewhat vindicated because like many parents with food allergic children "we just knew what the problem was" but then what do you do? Thanks to The Parent's Guide we knew what questions to ask the dietician and how to survive in a world where dairy foods appear to be everywhere!! This is a book that should be given to every school district and to every allergic child's teachers! I also believe this book would be useful to other psychologists like myself, who work with adolescents and families. We are giving a copy to our pediatrician so that she will know how to help other parents like us and to our parents who have even less understanding about allergies than we did and are not even sure they want to know more. This book is a wonderful guide; reading The Parent's Guide to Food Allergies is like sharing with a more knowledgeable friend.
