Rating: Summary: Overbearing Review: The authors' religious beliefs really get in the way of what could be helpful information in this book. Unfortunately, I could not stomach the anti-birth control propaganda, the inference that the only reason to use any type of birth control is to space children properly, or the admonition to "say my morning prayers" while taking my temperature. I was interested in learning about my body, not the Catholic view of birth control. Maybe because the introduction and section on coming off the pill turned meoff so much, I didn't find it very useful. I found it disorganized, highly technical, and somewhat annoying. I would only recommend this book to Christians.
Rating: Summary: NFP - Healthy and Effective! Review: This information-packed book is a must for couples who wish to understand the gift of their fertility. It gives the reader an excellent understanding of Natural Family Planning. This is not the "rhythm method", but a method based on observation of one's own pattern of fertility. As a woman, I particularly was pleased to develop an awareness of my body's natural cycles. This method is exceptionally useful for women, like me, who have irregular menstrual cycles. The authors cite moral, religious, health and environmental reasons to support the use of Natural Family Planning. They also provide ample information demonstrating why the sympto-thermal method of NFP gives a woman all the tools she needs to determine her fertile time, whether she is seeking pregnancy or to avoid a pregnancy. The effectiveness of this method approaches or exceeds that of the Pill, without the health risks for the woman or baby. I highly recommend this book!
Rating: Summary: THE book on the Sympto-Thermal method Review: I would definitely recommend this book over others on fertility awareness and natural family planning. The review at the end of each chapter is very helpful in learning the basic concepts, and the sample chart exercises are invaluable -- they cover "real-life" cycle irregularities as well as some "textbook-perfect" cycles. There is also a lot of information on the return of fertility following childbirth, which I don't remember seeing in the other books I've read. There also seem to be more rules for chart interpretation than in other books, which allows for a shorter period of abstinence given individual cycle patterns. This is a very well researched book, and includes lots of references to medical journal articles. One section of this book covers Christian teaching on birth control and Catholic teaching in particular, and is very interesting for those who are pursuing NFP for religious reasons. However, this book is not "just" for Catholics, and is a wonderful resource for any couple looking for natural, ecologically-friendly birth regulation.
Rating: Summary: very comprehensive Review: Although I'm not a Christian, I wanted to use NFP, and this method is the most comprehensive I could find. This is an excellent manual, and if you are able to attend the classes as well it makes it so much the better. While I didn't care one way or the other about the large amount of moral/theological reasoning, it would seem to suit those with such concerns. The scientific aspect is superb. I have been using this method for about a year, and I love it.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful book! Natural Effective Eco-Friendly Birth Control Review: This book is a detailed manual for learning the sympto-thermal method of Natural Family Planning. The sympto-thermal method is a highly effective method of birth control, that involves only a thermometer, personal observation, and patience to make it work. The method has been throughly studied and has numerous examples and scientific references to back up the information in the book. There is a good section in the back containing reference books and resources for nursing, nutrition, and men's and women's health. This book is geared towards a Christian religious tradition (primarily Catholic), but the information inside is very valuable for it's own merits. If you are looking for a completely natural form of birth control or pregnancy planning, that involves no drugs and is non-invasive, This book is what you are looking for. It is useful and very effective. I would and do recommend it very highly.
Rating: Summary: Easy to understand and use! Review: This is a wonderfully comprehensive book on NFP. I would recommend this to anyone checking out alternate forms of NFP because of the reliability and effectiveness of the sympto-thermal method taught here. Great "marriage insurance" too!
Rating: Summary: Read for ease and understandability of complicated processes Review: There are many books on the market discussing Fertility Awareness and Natural Family Planning; however, because the processes of the human body are so complicated it can be difficult to learn. Many books offer examples of many styles of chart change but lack the opportunity to examine and interpret these charts let alone the correct interpretations in the back. This book is a clearly written and easily read account of these processes discussed in an uncomplicated language. The charts and review sections insure that the large amount of imformation is digested. This book is also excellent for those who are breastfeeding because other books out there sorely lack information on fertility in this time. I believe this book will better explain any other books that others may have and even those who use the popular "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" will be benefited by the sample charts and reviews. I would recommend this to many others but especially to Catholics as it reinforces Church Doctrine.
Rating: Summary: In-depth,easy to follow instructions for the best birth cont Review: This book gives easy to follow instructions and complete science for the best birth control method ever. Lots of examples, personal stories, and Christian perspective, as well.
Rating: Summary: Thorough science and theology behind NFP method Review: My husband and I learned to use NFP (7 years and running) using the last edition of this book, but this one is much better. There is more of everything--more science (this is not hocus-pocus, cross-your-fingers-and-hope-for-the-best stuff) and lots of information that is related to the method but not actually part of the method. As someone who has had wildly irregular cycles all of my adult life, NFP has been a huge health bonus--I feel that I understand what is happening with my body. (Note: The method is effective even for those with irregular cycles. We have 2 children, and both were conceived on the first try.) This book explains the method so clearly, anyone can have confidence in its effectiveness. It also explains other things like using breastfeeding for natural child spacing. The book, scientific as it is, is rooted in a Catholic view of marriage and sexuality--I feel that that is one of its strengths, but even if that is not your style, you shouldn't avoid this very comprehensive work on an under-appreciated method of child spacing.
Rating: Summary: Ok, if you can get by the catholic theology Review: This book book gives some good information about NFP. Unfourtnatley it also includes a great deal of the authors moral point of view that will attempt to make you feel guilty to force you to use NFP. It also is very critical of other forms of NFP and makes unsubstantiated claims of other NFP method effictivness rates.
