Rating: Summary: A guidebook of insight to caring for an aging loved one. Review: This was a great book that gives insight to an aging loved one. I only wish I had gotten my hands on this book a year ago. Jacqueline Marcell tells her story with humor and compassion. She charts the course of getting help and understanding that you must trust yourself to find the answers. It is hard to watch a parent get older but harder still to understand why they resist help or the child who is trying to help them. This book acknowledges our feelings of frustration and hurt but inspires us to rise above our feelings to seek and get the help our parents need. I have recommended this book to all my friends who are caring for aged parents - all who might someday be caring for them. We all get a hint of how difficult it is to accept a declining body in our 50's and 60's but it is so much more at 80 & 90 when not only our the body is failing but the mind is declining and the independence is slipping away. Often times you are alone dealing with the care of the parent who is frustrated with these issues - and you feel your parent should be grateful that you have stepped up to the plate to deal with their care - you can't understand why they don't notice the stress you are going through. This book helps you to understand what is happening and how to deal with the often times overwhelming situation. Read the book and laugh as you come to an understanding of aging and raging.
Rating: Summary: A must read guidebook for dealing with the reality of aging Review: This is a great story told with humor and real insight to the reality of dealing with a difficult parent or loved one. It acknowledges the wear and tear on the caregiver dealing with Doctors and Services that don't see the day to day issues the caregiver does. I wish I had gotten my hands on this book when I first started caring for my father. I think I would have realized sooner that he needed more of my involvement in his decision making. I tried so hard to allow him independence failing to realize he was losing his ability to make appropriate decisions. I would have involved more people and insisted on being more involved in his daily needs. If you have an aging loved one you are for caring you must read this book - it gives you permission to be responsible and wise and to have feelings of your own. It encourages you to be strong. When you are caring for a beloved parent it is so hard to come to the realization that they are the child and you are now the parent - you go through a major denial that this can be happening to the parent who has loved you - cared for you and been the one who provided for your family. Even if in your heart you know better it is still hard to sit in the drivers seat and pry your parents hands off the steering wheel while you all go on the ride of your life.
Rating: Summary: If You Love Your Family, You Must Read This Book Today! Review: Anyone who has parents still alive should read this book - not just if your parents are elderly and starting to need more care, but also to prepare yourself for what could and probably will become a part of your future. It is better to be prepared than to be surprised and defeated by your own lack of knowledge. My parents have both died and the last few years they were alive were very hard on me and other members of my family. Someone who has not experienced the situations outlined in this book will find Jacqueline Marcell's story hard to fathom. When things start to get rough, you feel that help must be out there. You assume that there will be doctors with knowledge and experience to guide you through this difficult time and people who will be available to help. I can say with total honesty based on my own situation that you have to be prepared or you will not be able to properly take care of someone you love and at the same time, take care of yourself. The author knows of what she writes. This book is a must read - and a must to believe! Do not think she is exaggerating her experiences.
Rating: Summary: If your loved one has dementia, read this book! Review: I could hardly put this book down! Ms. Marcell does a wonderful job of telling a difficult story with a mix of humor and compassion. As a caregiver, I could not recommend this book enough for anyone who is dealing with a loved-one with dementia.

It lovingly tells the story of caring for an impossible elderly parent and brings humor, insight, drama and resourcefulness to the story. You will be inspired by Jacqueline's gifts of strength and resilience and will enjoy the emotional ride the book takes you on as you recognize yourself and the elderly ones you've loved on the pages of her book. If you've lost all hope on a situation of your own - I guarantee you this book will give you new energy to conquer your situation.
Rating: Summary: Thanks, I Needed That Review: Jacqueline's book came to me when I was in real need of it. My father, who supplied me with unconditional love for many years, passed on and left his wife of 64yrs lost. I now was in charge of a parent who was almost 90 yrs. old. I didn't have a clue what being 90 meant. I didn't understand my mother at all and was so frustrated. Anyone who has elderly parents or even close to being elderly,"Elder Rage" will give you a clue at the very least the insight that will be very helpful for you to have a good relationship with them.
Rating: Summary: This was the best Review: Thanks heavens for this wonderful book. Jacqueline Marcell has paved the way for the agony and the ecstasy we all share as care givers. I never would have believed it if I hadn't experienced it and Jacqueline just helped verify my sanity. This is a wonderful story and a truly helpful "how to" book. How to live and cope while caring for the elderly with dementia. This is a must read !!!!
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Book Review: This book helped my family deal with my fathers dementia and Alzheimers. Jacquelines insightfulness and humor has helped my mom cope with the loss of her husband and us children of our father. It helped to know that we were not the only ones who have lived thru this ordeal. I am so glad that someone finally wrote a book that helps us caregivers look at this awful disease in a way that does not demean the sick person. Thanks again Jacqueline!
Rating: Summary: Thoroughly recommended reading Review: As a professional working in the field of dementia, the value of early diagnosis of dementia (and Alzheimer's Disease in particular due to treatment implications) is invaluable. So often the early signs of dementia are overlooked as the consequences of 'normal ageing' and too often the individual with dementia is left without the medical and/or emotional and/or practical support he or she needs. As well as detailing a very personal experience of coping with dementia in a loved one, Elder Rage is a compelling and humourous read that raises awareness in as pleasant a way possible considering the topic. I found it to be full of practical advice for improving the quality of life of the individual with dementia and/or physical disability, from modifications that can be made in the home, ways to access support, and tips on managing the difficult behaviour that may form part of the dementia symptomatology. I found the original writing style entertaining and felt it served to emphasized the fact this journey was a very personal one, just as each individual who suffers from dementia and their caregivers' experiences will vary. A must read book for all caregivers of dementia sufferers, and a great read for anyone else.
