Rating: Summary: Read this book first! Review: Karen Seroussi's book is an excellent summary of information I pulled from many different sources - including the internet and tapes of DAN! Conferences. If I had been able to read her book immediately after my son's diagnosis, rather than waiting to find the information from many different sources and then assessing it myself, (without, of course, the true support of our pediatrician) then maybe my son would be even further along than he already is. And he is doing amazingly well.Karen has written an outstanding book. It reads like a John Grisham book - like when I read John Grisham, I could not put it down, and was up until 3:00 a.m. to finish it! While this therapy may not be the path of choice for every family, I believe that every family must be aware of it as an option. This book is a must read for anyone who knows a family dealing with autism. I already know of two families who are going to put their child on a gluten/casein free diet simply because of the Parents magazine article which is a summary of this book. I would love to have a copy to give every family with a very young child just receiving a diagnosis! Especially those who may not be inclined to do research on their own and who will wait for their doctor to tell them what to do. Better yet, I wish I had a copy for every pediatrician! It was on Amazon.com, while reading a parent discuss his opinion of William Shaw's book, that I realized my son had symptoms I had not even thought of. I hope that this book will guide you to a therapy that you may not have known of or may not have considered otherwise.
Rating: Summary: Mind boggling and wonderful. A Godsend. Review: Unraveling the Mystery Of Autism is a MUSY READ for teachers, school principals and administrators, and parents of children, including expectant ones, or anyone who expects to have a child one day. I weep when I think of all the children and parents who have been needlessly locked in the prison of autism and who could have been saved. The author has obviously been "called" to do good in this world. God bless her.
Rating: Summary: A "Must Read" for Parents of Children with Autism Review: Karyn Seroussi has written a fascinating account of her son's recovery from autism. Yes, we've all been told that autism is a lifelong disability for which recovery is not possible, but the rules are apparently being rewritten. Do not let the fact that your doctor is behind the times keep you from reading this wonderful book, and trying the interventions it describes. Viewing autism as a biological disorder for which a cure is possible is an idea whose time has come, and we owe Ms. Seroussi a great deal for presenting it in such a well-written, and heartfelt manner. I couldn't put this book down, and read it in a single sitting. This book presents an important intervention which I have been using for several years. My child did not "recover" but is much improved. I am thrilled that a book is lending legitimacy to this important approach to treating autism.
Rating: Summary: Great Book! Review: I don't have a child with autism, but I love medical mystery stories. This was a doozy-I was up until 3am to finish it. An exciting and chilling story that will give lots of hope to people dealing with this disorder.
Rating: Summary: A TRIUMPH FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM AND THEIR FAMILIES Review: This beautifully written book will serve as a manual for anyone facing autism and a challenge to the medical community to listen to what their patients are telling them. Seroussi's stunning revelations, as she puts together the pieces of the puzzle which recover her son, make for a fascinating story which will doubtless change the outcome for countless children claimed by what has become a tragic epidemic. Unraveling the Mystery, along with Lisa Lewis' Special Diets for Special Kids and Bill Shaw's Biological Treatments for Autism and PDD are "must reads" for parents and professionals fighting this battle. Kudos to Seroussi for her courage to tell this story.
Rating: Summary: Why This Autism Book? Review: When my 15-month-old son Miles began to lose his language and social skills and was diagnosed with autism, I hated the fact that books about autism did nothing but describe the symptoms and the various therapies. I was not satisfied with the idea that there was nothing I could do, and no known reason for my son's disability. If I could discover what had triggered Miles's decline, then something could be done about it! Along with his autistic behaviors had appeared physical symptoms like allergies, ear infections, diarrhea, constipation, food cravings, screaming, and sleep problems. But what on earth could cause such a thing? I was lucky. I had access to the Internet, a scientist husband with a Ph.D. in chemistry, and an early diagnosis. We discovered many, many things about autism that our doctors did not know. We found that Miles's digestive system had lost the ability to break down certain proteins, and when I took them out of his diet, his autism began to go away. We even found clues about what had triggered his autism in the first place. By the time he was three, Miles had been de-classified as autistic and was functioning above age level in social and cognitive skills. At six, he continues to be indistinguishable from his peers. And I am not alone. I have discovered thousands of other parents with children similar to Miles who have vastly improved or fully recovered due to these immunological and biological interventions. This is a book about what is known so far about the biological nature of autism. It is a parent-friendly explanation of what Dr. Bernard Rimland's "Defeat Autism Now!" doctors believe to be true about treating autistic kids. It is insider information about what your child's doctor probably does not know, and might not believe about autism. I believe that there exists an answer to the question of what causes every child's autism, but that sometimes those answers must be actively pursued. I wrote this book to make your path far easier than mine. I wish you strength, perseverance, and the best of luck.
Rating: Summary: A life saver Review: I only found out about this book from the article in this month's "Parents" Magazine (Feb 2000), but now my life will never be the same. I could not put this book down! An entire generation of children is about to be saved, thanks to the facts that are finally available from this book.
Rating: Summary: Read this book! Review: ... I think every pediatrician in the world should be made to read this incredible book before telling one more parent that their child's autism can't be cured. It CAN! And every parent of an autistic child should read this book before another unecessary day of suffering goes by. There's no drug company that can get rich from this because there's no "miracle drug" involved, so you're not seeing it promoted. Ms. Seroussi has figured out how to rid a child of this nightmare just by changing his diet. This is nothing short of miraculous.
Rating: Summary: Review from Publishers Weekly (12/13/99) Review: What can be more devastating for parents than to learn that their child is autistic? The severely debilitating neurological disorder, which affects social and language development, can be difficult to treat. When her son was diagnosed with autism at 19 months, Seroussi, a small-business owner and wife of a research chemist, determined to do everything in her power to help her child achieve normal functioning. In addition to pursuing recommended speech and behavior modification therapies for her son, Seroussi devoted her considerable energies--often against medical advice--to researching alternative approaches. Her own experience and a growing body of scientific evidence pointed to connections between autism and diet. And though the theory has not yet been proven, Seroussi says, research now suggests that autism may be an autoimmune disorder triggered in rare cases by an infant's measles-mumps-rubella immunizations. Convinced that the inability to digest certain proteins was contributing to her son's conditio n and that his autism was related to his reaction to MMR vaccines, Seroussi eliminated suspect foods from his diet; he made such dramatic improvement that, by age four, he was functioning normally. Now a crusader for dietary intervention, Seroussi has written a book that will give hope to many families--though she cautions that not every autistic child responds to such treatment. She includes a FAQ section, gluten-and casein-free recipes and resources, and a list of organizations and ANDI (the Autism Network for Dietary Intervention) and co-editor of the ANDI News.
Rating: Summary: A must-read if someone close to you has autism Review: My six year old daughter was recently diagnosed with "high-functioning autism." My wife had the good fortune to run into Karyn Seroussi's Feb 2000 article in Parenting magazine. We implemented some of the changes she recommends and have seen real improvements in our daughter's mood and behavior. I stayed up nights reading the book, and let me tell you, it was well worth the effort. Karyn gives all kinds of information, encouragement, and pointers for anyone trying to help an autistic child. Phone numbers, addresses, and website urls are all provided so you can do your own research. If you are the parent of an autistic child, do them and yourself a favor, buy this book and read it carefully! There is nothing to lose and potentially a great deal to gain.
