Rating: Summary: Not for people who have serious spinal problems Review: I bought both "Treat Your Own Back" and "Treat Your Own Neck" based on other customers' reviews. It is very good for people who have NEVER had serious spinal problems-- only MINOR backaches and nothing more; no accidents, no real injuries, no surgeries, etc. It explains the most basic, rudimentary mechanics of the spine, posture, etc. and, does include disclaimers which I wish to repeat--- I strongly advise that you see a neurologist or neurosurgeon, as we all have, before you ever consider buying these books if you need help with acute or chronic problems in any way. I was extremely disappointed in these books. I am looking for the brothers, Drs. Saul, who are the best in exercise to prevent spinal surgery. Thank you.
Rating: Summary: EASY Read - saved me from surgery Review: I cannot believe some called this a "tough read" above. It has pictures of the very simple exercises. I gave a copy of this to a friend who gave it to his 60 year old Chinese mother who cannot speak english, and it worked for her! I was given this book by a neurosurgeon, after he looked at the MRI scan of my back. I have two herniated discs that were not bad enough to require surgery. I followed the directions and just as others have said, I was well in a few days. I have given the book to at least seven people. It does not work for everyone - one of my friends had a different kind of problem to which these techniques do not apply. However, six out of seven aint bad !
Rating: Summary: Best therapy for low back pain I have found in 30 years. Review: I first borrowed this book in 1985 under recommendation from a friend who had gotten his copy in Austrailia. The secret to Robin McKenzie's back regimen is the emphasis on "first aid" self treatment and the use of both flexion and extension of the back in remedial treatment. The exercises are easy to follow and can be started at onset of the event, "My back just went out." If you have ever suffered the debilitating experience of low back pain, you should try McKenzie's treatment. Printed in New Zeland, this book is hard to find.
Rating: Summary: Saved me from surgery in 1988;still love this book Review: I had a herniated disc at L5-S1 in 1988 at the age of 33. I did not want to have surgery and found a wonderful physician who gave me this book. It saved me from surgery then and continues to be 'my friend' if I have a flare up. I have lent it to so many people and the last person didn't return it...so I am buying it again. The exercises and information on posture and lordosis maintenance are my back Bible. I am so grateful that my doctor was willing to forego surgery and gave me this book to educate me and help me heal myself. Get it, read it, use it!
Rating: Summary: After my back problem occurred, this book gave me hope! Review: I had sciatic nerve pain that numbed my left foot and kept me in bed for three weeks. The Chiropractor pulled and twisted me. The Md's injected cortisone. Finally, I could walk around again. I had done yoga in the past. Now I'm a believer! I am back practicing everyday. McKenzie's book doesn't recomend yoga directly, but that's what it is. It works. He provides hope that these back attacks can be prevented. I rate the book five stars!
Rating: Summary: Buy this book! Review: I have suffered with back and leg pain for two years. I tried medication and exercise programs with some success. Unfortunately, my pain would always return. I bought this book after injuring my back again recently. I began following the program and in a few short weeks my pain is gone. This book has given me the tools I need to heal myself for good. I cannot give it a higher recommendation. If you suffer from low back pain or sciatica, you should buy this book. You will be happy you did.
Rating: Summary: Back to Good Health Review: I saw three doctors about my slipped and herniated disks before one sent me to a physical therapist who recommended this book. I lost about six weeks of this past summer to excruciating pain that ever Percocet could not dull. Through following the advice on posture and stretching in this book I am now pain-free and have returned to my daily activities plus working out, mountain biking, skiing, and more. I also own two McKenzie lumbar support rolls and got my boss to buy the book too. He's also become a 'McKenzite'.
Rating: Summary: A total quack Review: I used Robin's technique to help my sciatica when I was in my 20s. Now, 20 years later, a physical therapist asks how I messed up my posture so badly. When she heard that I used Robin's techniques she said it was too bad. That Robin has messed up many people's backs. Now I have severe arthritis between my shoulder blades from having such horrible posture for the past 20 years. Save yourself and get a recommendation to a respected physical therapist instead.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding book for people with low back pain or sciatica Review: I'm an anesthesiologist who has cared for about 1000 patients with severe low back pain and/or leg pain over the past 12 years. I have had personal experience with low back pain in the past year. A nurse at my hospital told me about this book earlier this year. I bought it, read it immediately, and now feel it is the most practical book for patients I have ever come across. I am now recommending this book to the majority of patients I see with chronic low back pain.
Rating: Summary: This Book Really Works! Review: I've had lower back pain since childbirth over 30 years ago. Occasionally I'd twist or turn the wrong way, and my back would go "out" for no apparent reason. Like many folks, I've tried all kinds of remedies from muscle relaxers to chiropractors, all with about the same amount of moderate success. My doctor recommended this book to me a couple of years ago. I read it through and followed the instructions to determine what kind of pain I was having, then did the exercises as instructed. Within 2 days I was almost back to normal. Within a week I was pain-free. After you're pain-free, in order to stay flexible and avoid these little mishaps the author recommends you do some of the stretching exercises regularly. I did them for a while, but after a few months I was back to my usual busy schedule, with no time to spare. Last week I bent down to pick something up, and my back went "out" again. I got the book out and started the exercises immediately. I only missed one day from work, and was pain-free within just a few days. This time I'm going to figure out a way to schedule some stretching exercises or yoga into my daily schedule. This book is a godsend!
