Rating: Summary: A clear voice Review: I adore the Internet because, among other things, it allows us to be anonymous voices delivering messages without attached messengers. Thus, the messages must be evaluated without prejudice...But Ms. Muscio's book is clearly written from a particular narrator in a particular class, and it feels impossible to write a review without declaring that, yes, I'm a white male and yes, many parts of _cunt_ made me feel personally uncomfortable. Nonetheless, _cunt_ is very much worthwhile reading. Whether you agree fully, partially, or not at all with the the book, Ms. Muscio offers a clear and pointed commentary on women's roles in society, and offers many suggestions for combating sexism and nurturing women. Where she falls short is on offering ways on engaging and changing society at large. Sexism hurts all of us, not just women; its eradication requires cooperation from all of us. Buy the book. Read it. Pass it around. Argue it with someone who sees it differently. Even if ultimately nobody's mind is changed, _cunt_ can can at least help to remove our absurd taboo on discussing our sexuality. Enlightenment does not spread through silence.
Rating: Summary: a life-changing book Review: I'm a feminist in the sense that I want women and men to have equal rights, but I've never realized how insidious this culture is in propagating subtly misogynistic messages. This book is about giving women back our choices. We have a choice to use cost-effective and earth-friendly tampons and pads. We have a choice to use birth control that does not manipulate or damage our bodies. We have a choice to protect ourselves AND other women from rape. The author goes on about how oppressed Iranian women have far more love for one another than the average American woman, how in some countries genital mutilation is forced on girls, but in America we PAY to mutilate ourselves. There's more than just women's issues, however. She gives evidence on how corporations are lying to us, how the media is lying or shading the truth, the sheer idiocy of our president, etc. I didn't used to be a very politically aware person, but this book made me realize that we NEED to know what's going on in this world. So, ladies, do yourselves a favor and read this book, and guys, read this book so you don't become one of the silly men simply because everyone else is.
Rating: Summary: Oh.....OK Review: Titles like this really exemplify what the term REALLY means: Can't Understand Normal Thinking
Rating: Summary: No better way to say it! Review: This was a gift I got at my UN-bridal shower. Yes, I celebrated the end of my marriage, and it was long overdue. Having this book fits perfectly with my take charge, reclaim yourself attitude. I like the word, it's strong and powerful just as Inga Muscio points out to readers. This book, however is not just an entymological journey, it reaches far deeper than letters and language ever could. Why would such a strong and positive word cause women to cringe and cower today? Inga Muscio explores that and reaches her hand out to all those willing to take it and rise out of the shame and insecurities. So much is addressed in this book about women's bodies, attitudes, feelings, beliefs, and sisterhood as well as lack of sisterhood (sad but true). I would recommend this book to anyone but if a person is not already familiar with feminist literature or shy about women's anatomy discussion, perhaps a few primers would be in order before this pulls-no-punches read. I think the title alone scares people LOL, it's on display in my living room though and no one has run out yet. I don't think I can do it justice with a review.
Rating: Summary: This is why im proud to be a woman.... Review: For the longest time I've been afraid to express sexual feelings, or even talking about femininity for fear that I would be looked down upon or opressed. This book has opened my eyes to see what beauty ALL women posess, and actually made me proud to be one. I am no longer afraid to discuss menstration, or sex with anyone else, and it has made me value my body for the temple that it really is. I would recommend that everyone read this book, espcially women, and you too will understand the power that women can have under any circumstance.
Rating: Summary: words of power Review: Although this book raises plenty of eyebrows and tempers, I feel that every woman should read it. It is funny, empowering and it downright makes you think...something that many people are not used to. Even if you don't agree with her, read it and think about it. By the way, I use sea sponges now rather than pollute my body with bleach and Goddess-knows what else. Peace & Love.
Rating: Summary: one more thing Review: I wanted to make one more comment about this book... after having some time and space away from the book, i must say that the diatribe about the evil conspiracy of the men owned maxi pad and tampon manufacturers to keep women down and in their place as consumers was INSANE. They have padded cells for people like this. First of all...when these wonderful conveniences were created, I seriously doubt some man was sitting around going: "hmmmm i wonder how i can disconnect women from their bodies, keep them in their place, while making a fast buck off of them." (which you really have to remember when these things were created, most women did not work outside the home, so they didn't have their own money, so ultimately it was the husband's or father's money...oh yeah...big conspiracy here.) It is FAR more likely that the man had a wife, daughter, mother, etc. that complained about the fact that nothing existed for them and he felt for them and so created this product. Also, are you aware that while these companies are primarily man-owned, women are designing these products for the most part? There is no conspiracy. YOu don't have to buy them if you have such a bug up your back orifice, you can use rags and sea sponges and just knock yourself out with that, but i sure as hell will continue to buy feminine hygeine products because they are CONVENIENT and it's stupid to go backwards in time like that to a LESS convenient approach. also...it's called feminine HYGEINE...because NO ONE even the most rabid feminist thinks that bleeding all over your couch and clothes and bed is a hygenic or clean activity.
Rating: Summary: An Unexpected Jewel Review: i was skeptical when a good friend lent this to me (mainly because of the title), but was quickly won over as soon as i began reading. fabulous insights, a very fresh voice, and a wealth of important info and resources. even though some parts were very serious and sad, i felt so empowered and inspired after reading it. required reading for ALL women, regardless of political leanings or age! it is filled with knowledge about our bodies, natural medicine, and self-appreciation that we have lost through ages of modernization. i cannot recommend it highly enough!
Rating: Summary: My Personal Bible! Review: I adore this book, seriously. I've learned so much, and I just can't express how much this book means to me. Buy it now!
