Rating: Summary: Just another raving review for a book you need to read... Review: This book reiterated to me my life story. I am a young transsexual, and this book brought me out of the hell of depression and showed me that there was meaning and light in my existence, and set me on the road to recovery to self-discovery. If you are TS, TG, or just a "normal" person, I suggest this book to help you learn what a TS person goes through and how to help them. I'll bet there one in your life already - even if you don't even know it! ;)
Rating: Summary: Outstanding book in trying to understand transsexualism Review: I found this book to be very open and helpful for people trying to understand transsexualism. Whether you are going through this or a family member, coworker or friend of someone going though this. This book will open some avenues of thought that will help everyone. Truly a must read for all who are going down the path of transsexualism.
Rating: Summary: Clear and Easy to Read Review: A great introduction to the world of Transsexualism. This book is one of the easy reading variety, filled with Millie Brown's own words and experiences.A section at the end of the book is a collection of poetry culled from her clients writings. A must for anyone who is trying to understand in non-clinical terms some of the basic emotional contexts of Transsexualism.
Rating: Summary: To understand transsexualism, read this book Review: If there is such a thing on the market as a definitive work on the phenomenon of transsexualism, this is it. Mildred lets us all understand the "true selves" of these unique people.
Rating: Summary: The Best Book I've Ever Read!!! Review: I have bought a copy for my parents, my friends and am now saving up to buy more copies. True Selves is the most sympathetic approach to transsexuality I have ever encountered. Without being accademic, this book gets to the grass roots of what it means to be Gender Dysphoric, while offering possitive and practical means by which friends and relatives of transsexuals might begin to understand and empathize with the issues facing them. This is the first book about Transsexuals that has not made me cringe. Mildred has successfully separated gender from sexuality and portrays the feelings and desires of transsexuals in a genuine and honourable light. Thankyou Mildred for your enormous contribution to the Transgendered Community.

It is a very fact based book, excellent in fact. I have recommended this book to friends i have come out to. Once they read it they said "I had no idea that it could be so difficult" it really opened their minds and helped them understand. I now have another friend reading the book. I rate this book 10 out of 10.
Rating: Summary: Excellent overview of Transsexualism Review: I found this book to be an excellent overview of Transsexualism dealing with all aspects of gender change and the issues involved. I find the book a good reference for everyone. From the person identifying as a transsexual, to helping professionals, friends and family, to those just interested in the subject matter. I've read quite a few books on the subject matter and rate this the top one yet. And yes, I am a post-operative transsexual woman.
Rating: Summary: An excellent, sympathetic introduction to transsexualism Review: This is a very useful book to anyone just beginning to try to understand the concept of transsexualism. It is carefully written, without technical medical descriptions, and balances well between biographical/autobiographical material and factual information. It is neither sensationalist or syrupy, but does convey the difficulties faced by transsexual individuals in the various stages of their lives. For this reason, I would recommend it to anyone recently identifying as transsexual who needs an introductory text for those around them. The title states it is for "families, friends, co-workers and helping professionals" and indeed it is eminently suitable for these groups. As a transsexual man myself, I have two copies which I have lent to people including my father who found it very helpful, and my therapist and have purchased a further copy for my partner's family. Three copies must be a fair recommendation of a book! I find its layout logical and appropri! ! ate, beginning as it does with some basic facts about the subject, leading on to how it affects the individuals in various stages of their lives - childhood, teen years and adulthood. It then goes on to deal with the nuts and bolts of therapy, transition, surgical options and coming out and ends with some biographical text. It covers both male to female and female to male aspects well, where many other texts focus primarily on the male to female route. It is also relatively apolitical - many other texts on the subject tend to have their information tied up with a significant political element which can make them in my opinion difficult for those new to the subject to read. All in all it is one of the best books I have on transsexualism. The only one in my collection which is sufficiently similar to compare is Trans-X-u-all (O'Keefe and Fox) which, while it is a good book, is not such a good introductory text as this.
Rating: Summary: True Selves: A great book for family and friends! Review: True Selves provides an excellent overview of the transsexual phenomenon and is an excellent resource for people who have just learned of a family member or friend being transsexual. It has been my book of choice for that purpose. It does have one major shortcoming, however. Depending on the mind-set of the reader, the book may come across as suggesting that a transsexual's marriage is (and always was) a sham, intended only for the purpose of fitting in with society. Clearly not the author's intent, that impression resulted from the publisher's removal of a chapter on sexual orientation, leaving other parts of the book without a proper context. Overall, however, I would recommend the book very highly.
Rating: Summary: The best book of its kind. Review: I've read a number of books describing transsexualism, hoping to find the right one to give to people as I tell them about my own transition. When I read this one, I knew this was it, and I told my parents about myself within the week. They have since told me that this book was essential to their understanding of my condition. I believe the authors have provided an invaluable resource for anyone whose life is touched by knowing a transsexual person.
