Rating: Summary: A Disturbing Book about a Disturbing World. Review: I wish there was no need for this book. It speaks of things that shouldn't be done or even thought about. The title makes one think of something rare, unusual, and not of general interest. Unfortunately, the activities are all too common. The author is warm, likeable ... and even humorous at times. The subject is the worst case opposite. As parents we wish to raise happy, innocent children. Kites and kittens, puppies and dolls. Laughter and sunny memories. Anna Salter shows the cruel statistics, demonstrating that the dangers to children are much greater than commonly believed. She provides practical advice that the readers of the book can use to protect themselves and their loved ones.
Rating: Summary: Excellent for Professionals and Parents Review: I'm a clinical psychologist and parent. Anna did a great job of blending her experiences as a professional, and a parent, to create a must-read. Anna is a thorough fact checker and it shows. Great resource for parents, teachers, mental health professionals, and should be required reading for the Catholic Church hierarchy. If they are still in denial after reading this, there's no hope. GREAT JOB ANNA.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book - must read Review: Must read book that will help you understand the "real risk" from these type of people. The best book I have ever read on this terrible subject.
Rating: Summary: The Bad Parts Undermine the Good Review: The BEST thing about this book is that it puts the responsibility for the well-being of children where it belongs - with the parents. It seems that people have grown to assume that we should be allowed a guarantee for absolute safety, without having to contribute much to that safeguarding role. I guess it would be one thing if our government truly were able to accomplish that. But in reality, there are no guarantees to life, and there never will be. I believe it was Benjamin Franklin that said, "..They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty or safety." We have to work harder and do what we can to prevent tragedies, something that many of us are not very good at. The very thought of having your child abducted or worse, murdered, can render even the most savvy of parents, let alone the uninformed/misinformed parent - frozen with fear. And since most people in this country are uninformed/misinformed - most are 'frozen with fear'. The tragedy is, because of the knee-jerk reactions and legislative flailing - we are ALL victims of sex offenses. Finishing this book had me contemplating the probability that Ms. Salter has to either be putting on a very good act, or is one of the most paranoid individuals in this country. What I find most interesting however, is that she is also an author of murder/crime novels. You would think that after seeing the horrors that she speaks of, she would not find the stomach to write fictitious novels about these things. Thirdly, Salter seems to have a personal vandetta against journalist/writer Judith Levine (Harmful to Minors) as she attacks Levine's viewpoints, and questions the integrity of her research. I found this to be rather unprofessional, and felt cheated that I, as the reader, was needing to travel down this pathway of Salter's personal agenda. I struggled while trying to determine how many stars to pick, because as I said - she is probably one of the first I have seen to point the finger at parents and say "...YOU must safeguard your children - THAT IS PROBABLY YOUR MOST IMPORTANT JOB!" She also gave many, many tips on things that you might want to watch out for. However, the hysteria and hype are all too familiar, and the damage that this continues to prolong are, in my opinion, immeasurable. Hence - two stars.
Rating: Summary: Predators are among us. Review: There are many predators among us who wish to take away our pride, our innocence, and our hope. Reading this book may prevent you from becoming a victim. It is not the best-written book in the world, having a slightly choppy style, but reading it may well be one of the best things you can do for yourself.
Rating: Summary: Great Book!, tells truth about criminals Review: This book discusses the thought processes of criminals including rapists, murderers, pedophiles and sadists in detail. Understanding these scumbags is the first step to protecting yourself and family against them. There are multiple police officers and detectives in my family and we have discussed these topics. The book is highly accurate and well written.
Rating: Summary: A MUST READ Review: This book is essential for ALL people to read, especially parents and those in the 'helping professions'. It will help clarify dangerous misconceptions and myths about sexual abusers that can actually serve to allow abusers to keep abusing. This book may be (or seem) written for a professional audience but the content is so powerful, and the knowledge gained so necessary, that the general public will benefit from the understanding and insight they will gain. I believe the most important contributions this book makes is in providing protection for potential victims by demonstrating who abusers may be and how they may gain access to children, and by helping us to realize that abusers are the people we most often trust and that we should believe victims when they come to us for help. When it comes to pedophiles, it is the very fact that we trust them that makes our children available to them.
This book is disturbing, but to understand the real threat of sexual abusers, we need to be disturbed. We musn't be comfortable in our ignorance, our lives and our childrens' lives depend on it.
Rating: Summary: Fascinating and frightening Review: This book is quite interesting.
From disgusting horny Catholic priets who attacks little boys to gym coaches.. Salter discusses what every parent need to know to keep their child safe.
A book every person should read.
Rating: Summary: If you've been hurt, read this book Review: This direct, authoritative, and arresting book is the best I've read about sex crimes. It gives the invaluable insights promised about protecting yourselves and your children, but it's more than that: Reading it can be very useful for victims. Most victims, even when they know intellectually that what happened wasn't their fault, look at the healing process from their own perspective: "Why did this happen to me? Why was I picked?" The real question is, "Why did someone do this?" Understanding how abusers, rapists, and sadists think and plan and what they think about their victims is perhaps the only way to forever dispel the notion that the crime centered on the victim. One of the most startling revelations is that rapists are surprised that their victims expect them to recognize them in court: "Why would she think I'd know her?" The book also does a lot to dispel the irritating myth that abuse victims turn into abusers. If you want the truth--with no dogma, pontification, or unsupported speculation--read this book.
Rating: Summary: A Must Read Review: Who wants to know about this stuff, really? Unfortunately, if you have small children it is important reading. I learned more from this book-and The gift of Fear by Gavin De Becker-about predators than I ever wanted to know. It has very up to date research with female offenders of which very little is known. She also gives personal examples of predatory behavior to watch for that have happened in her life too which is chilling. You won't be able to put this book down, although you will want to because of the subject matter.
