Rating: Summary: Extremely Insightful and Helpful Book! Fun Too! Review: I have read so many self help books, and many seemed to hint that a woman should capitalize on her weaknesses rather than her strengths, that women are weak and can't think for themselves, but "What Southern Women Know" doesn't allow you to rest on your laurels,it gives many wonderful examples of strong and feminine women who fight for themselves, families and home, and most of all when you have finished the book,it helps you get insight into yourself and what you are really capable of,which is just about everything. It is a no excuses book,it doesn't put women down as some books do,but builds them up. The book is extremely fun to read, not a dull moment in it..it will cheer you up and make your day! I read it at a low time in my life, and it helped me to see that life is a process, not always made up of right, wrong, black and white, but a process with twists and turns and sometimes we don't get what we want....we get something better.Read this book and you will learn to keep your ears, eyes and heart open to new and better possibilities. What I have learned is to handle situations with humor,it will ease the stress and you will be able to perform better at what you truly want in your life, your heart's desire.
Rating: Summary: A Gem of a Book! Review: This book is as refreshing as the scent of magnolias on a Spring morning. I now happily consider myself one of the growing number of people no doubt charmed by Ronda Rich's What Southern Women Know. What all Women should know is that, from this Northern man's perspective, Ronda is right on target as to what men truly appreciate in women. Trust me. What all Men should know is that women should be encouraged by them to read this book and follow its advice. What all People should know is that the graciousness, charm, warmth and can-do attitude displayed so consistently by Southern women in this book should be emulated more by us all, and for that the world would be a much better place. This book is laced with wisdom and humor. It's just plain fun to read. And, despite its title that refers to Southern women, Ronda's book actually feels more like it builds bridges between all regions and both sexes...and its done in a disarming, seemingly effortless way...as someone said: "Like buttah!" (butter) And it's full of substance, not just style. There is plenty of advice for getting what you want out of life, everything from enjoying satisfying relationships to having the right priorities in life to on-the-job tips, and a lot more. It feels like it was written by a good friend. What Southern Women Know is a jewel!
Rating: Summary: What Southern Women Know That Every Women Should Review: Any book on tape that can make me laugh while driving in Boston Traffic is worth more than Tiffany filled blue boxes. As a northern woman, I found Rhonda's voice took getting used to, but what I learned was so great, I can't wait to listen to it again. The characters are so wonderful, at the end of the book, I felt sad and that I will miss them. I only hope Rhonda comes out with another book, so I can revisit the South and the wonderful southern characters again. I can't wait to use some of the tips she talks about.
Rating: Summary: Transplant: "Magnolia in Training" Review: I'm a "stay at home" mother of 3 and I recently finished reading the book, "What Southern Women Know". I want to tell you that I enjoyed it very much and while I laughed at some parts I also have taken many things to heart. (Gotta work on some things)<nervous laugh>. Actually, I was born in Reading, PA. But my parents moved south and I was raised in the Sunny South. It was, after all, the only decent thing to do...<silly grin>. So while I consider myself a southerner, I'm really just a transplant, but love it and will never leave it. I think Ronda is a very special and strong lady and while I know people say that about her I only hope they will say it about me too. "That which does not kill us, (really does) make us stronger". I have not lived through some of the more difficult life experiences that she has gone through but seeing how she dealt with big tribulations and little inconveniences gives me understanding and insight. And that, means more than you know! Ps. I recently met Ronda at a Book Signing, she truly is a wonderful southern lady, and certainly as charming, if not more so, than her portrayal in her beautiful book.
Rating: Summary: smiling, nodding, and saying Amen Review: I received this audio-book for Christmas from a fellow southerner and a fine gift it turned out to be. Listening in the car during my daily travels, I found myself smiling, nodding and saying Amen. I found myself briefly distracted at the begining of the tape by Ms. Rich's accent and reading style. My first reaction was to wonder where Ms. Rich was from ( a southern habit of wondering "where your people are from" based on accent...not all southern accents are the same you know) However, I soon warmed to her and realized that giving this book reading to a "professional" would have been a mistake as we would have missed the pleasant and conversational style that is part of the charm of the audio-book. Ms. Rich's advice is time tested and true. I've known successful, charming women all of my life who employ many of the behavioral concepts in the book. I wouldn't go so far as to embrace everything suggested though. For instance, "the shorter your skirt when negotiating a new car price, the lower the price will be" may be true sometimes, but isn't advice I would personally endorse. All in all, this is a good book full of good advice. I've found her voice whispering in my ear in numerous situations lately. To her credit, most of Ms. Rich's advice produces win-win situations where everybody ends up happy. I plan to lock my daughters in the car on our next trip and let Ms. Rich give them a review of the things I hope I've already taught them !
Rating: Summary: Secrets of the Steel Magnolias Revealed Review: I found this book to be charming, captivating, and informative. Moving to the south some years ago, I was always fascinated by the strength and versatility of the southern woman. Ronda Rich shares those secrets with us in a humorous, tell-it-like-it-is manuscript. Definitively, southern food for thought!
Rating: Summary: Charming book, sage advice Review: Ronda Rich glorifies the Southern woman's spirit and the power of charming femininity in a hard world. Charm and grace are not restricted to below the Mason-Dixon line but there they seem to adhere to tradition more fervently than the north. There is something to be said about using tact and allure instead of aggression to resolve tension. I like her sense of preserving history and strong emphasis on details.
Rating: Summary: True Southerner Review: As a Southerner and a real "lover of the South", I couldn't wait to read this book. I was not disappointed at all! In a warm, funny, and expressive way, Ronda Rich reminds us of many things that our mothers taught us--but in our hectic everyday life,we sometimes forget. Her humorous anecdotes really brought back many fond childhood memories! This is a fun book to read and at the same time it reinforces what we should all strive for--"a kinder, gentler way of life". It also gives you a better understanding of what we " steel magnolias " are all about. A great book for mothers and daughters!
Rating: Summary: If you only knew her... Review: Ronda Rich is the genuine article. Scratch the surface and you'll get more of the same good, sweet, kind, smart woman she's exhorting us all to become in her book. She is one of those wonderful never-meets-a-stranger warm-hearted women who is always ready and willing to help others. Those people entitled to call this woman "friend" are fortunate indeed.
Rating: Summary: It IS what every woman should already know! Review: It's quite simple, really. Grace, charm, a sense of humor, and a strong backbone. We, as in women, all have these qualities. Miss Rich shares with us how Southern women DO get along in life. She does so with such charm and humor that it was very hard to put the book down until it was finished. I am from the south transplanted to the north at a young age, but everything comes back while reading her book. You don't realize how easy it is to forget common courtesy, grace and patience until you read a book such as Miss Rich has written. My copy of her book is now making the rounds at work in our reading circle. It is one for every woman to read and enjoy.
