Summary: The beauty of swans
Review: It's nearly the end of the summer and fourteen-year-old, Sara Godfrey is miserable. She's unhappy with her looks, she is overprotective of Charlie, her ten year old handicapped brother, and she misjudges everyone around her. One afternoon, Sara takes Charlie to see the swans at the nearby lake. Later that night, Charlie leaves home to look for the swans he loves so much. The plot thickens as Sara, and the rest of the town, lend a hand in the search for missing Charlie. In the end, Charlie is found, and Sara discovers she may actually be a swan.

Summary: The Summer of the Swans
Review: "The Summer of the Swans" is a delightful book about the adventures of two syblings, Charlie and Sarah, over their summer vacation. The book paints a vivid picture of the relationship between Sarah and her brother Charlie. The book is so vivid that one can almost feel the undeniable connection between them. Sarah's need to protect Charlie is a commonality among all older syblings. The story expresses the on and off feelings that syblings have toward one another (one minute you wish they lived in another country and the next minute you don't think you could live without seeing them everyday). It is a witty and well written story and worth reading.

Summary: Great Story About Sibling Bonds
Review: "The Summer of the Swans" is about the day when Sara Godfrey's mentally handicapped brother Charlie disappears after visiting the swans at the lake. Nobody is sure what happened to him, but everyone expects the worst because it's not typical for Charlie to have run off alone.

Sara feels responsible for losing her brother since she's the closest to him. Aunt Willie also blames herself because she had promised Sara and Charlie's dead mother she would protect him--and now he's gone.

Soon a search party gathers and everyone begins to look for the missing ten-year-old.

Even though "The Summer of the Swans" is primarily about the search for Charlie, Sara's family life begins to open up and we discover the different relationships she has with her simple younger brother Charlie, her overbearing aunt Willie, her older sister Wanda, and her remote father.

The recommended age group for this book is 8 - 12, but I would recommend it to anyone who has a mentally handicapped family member or can somehow relate with the story. It's easy reading and moves along rather quickly--the chapters are short and there are a few illustrations by Ted CoConis.

"The Summer of the Swans" won the Newbery Award in 1971. The book was later made into a TV movie in 1974 (aka "Sara's Summer of the Swans"), which I never saw because it was made before I was born.

I also recommend reading "The Falcon's Wing" by Dawna Lisa Buchanan (mentally handicapped family member).

In the end of the story they found Charlie. I loved this book.

Summary: Slow And Pointless
Review: The writing was bad and the plot was bad. I read it in fourth grade and I hated it. I think that having one single twist, brother gets lost-I must find him, is an overdone knock off plot. Dont read it!

Summary: Through My Eyes
Review: Whenever I think of swans it makes think of the story "The Ugly Duckling". When I read "The Summer of the Swans" Sara reminded me of that ugly duckling. The story is about a 14 year old named Sara. She has a beautiful older sister and a mentally challenged younger brother named Charlie. Sara was an orphan, like the ugly duckling. She always thought she was an outcast. When her brother wandered off one night Sara was forced to grow up and she blossomed into a beautiful swan.

Summary: Gripping
Review: Sara begrudgingly takes care of her mentally retarded brother, Charlie. At fourteen, Sara is confused and dismayed by her life. When Charlie gets up in the middle of the night to visit the swans Sara has showed him, he inevitably gets lost in the wilderness near their home. Sara and many of the townspeople search for Charlie. In the search for Charlie, Sara makes peace with herself. A good soul-searching experience for preteens.

Summary: I Loved this book!
Review: This book was about a girl named Sara, who's brother Charlie is mentally retarted. Sara, Charlie, and their sister Wanda, all live with their Aunt Willie. Charlie loves to go to the lake and watch the swans. So, Sara takes him one day, but it starts to get dark, and he doesn't want to go home. That night as Charlie lies in bed, he hears the swans. He follows them. It is dark outside, and he gets lost. The next morning Sara, Wanda, and Aunt Willie realize Charlie is missing, so the town starts out to look for him. Will they find him? I couldn't put this book down. I just wanted to find out what was going to happen next.

Summary: Teen angst
Review: This has been one of my favorite books for years. Sara lived with her bossy aunt Willie, her beautiful older sister, and her retarded brother Charlie. She had a difficult time getting along with her family and herself. She was happy one minute, discontent the next. No one sympathized with her. One sleepy summer night, Charlie disappeared in search of the swans he and Sara fed the day before. The family realized how much they really love him, even if he was annoying sometimes. Read the book to see if he's found. Teens should read this because they can identify with Sara's dissatisfaction and conflicting feelings. The author's writing style is spare but enjoyable. Just buy it!

Summary: Charlie gets saved........
Review: Sara is a young girl who has four people in her family including herself. She has a beloved brother named Charlie. Her Aunt Willie the second person in her family besides Charlie and herself. Any way her sister, her brother, and herself live with their Aunt Willie. the only reason they live with her is because their parents died. So now a young girl with a mouthful of braces lives in a small house with her family. Charlie the other main character has many different disabilities such as he can't talk or tell time. Charlie has a watch he loves to listen to. A couple of reasons I like this book is I like tragedies ,mysteries, and happy endings. What I don't like about this book is that I think it is kind a mean. Other wise it's one of the best books I've read.
