Summary: The "Horror of Combat"
Review: A Soldiers Heart by Gary Paulsen is a great book that gives specific details of the Civil War. Charley Goddard is a fifteen year old boy that lies about his age so that he can join the First Minnesota Volunteers--part of the shooting war in 1861. Charley thought his experiences with the Volunteers was just an adventure; he later found out that it was actual combat on the front lines. Charley fought battle by battle and literally saw the "horror of combat."

I believe the age levels for this book could be middle school or high school. It is a very easy and short book to read, therefore any student would like it that much more. Personally, I feel like this book would be very appropriate in today's society because it deals with a real life issue--war.

I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it!!

Summary: Only 15!
Review: A Review by Nic

A 15-year-old Charley Goddard herd the army needed more soldiers and decided he was going to lie about his age and sign for the army. He left his home and be came a soldier. Charley went to war and had second thoughts about the army. He saw things he never thought he would. From the first war to the last Charley never gave up. He saw soldier after soldier die right next to him, their blood splattering on his face. Charley got sick every now and then but who wouldn't when you see the faces of your friend dieing.

I liked this book because it had great description. It sucks you into the book you can't set it down. I my self, not much of a reader but this book made me read and have fun. The detail of soldiers being shot or blown to bits is amazing. Brought the setting and sounds to life. This book relates to every teenager is one way or another. The only thing I didn't like is that the writer doesn't tell you what the characters look like very much; I think the writer just wants you to use your imagination.

I strongly recommend this book to teenagers that like gore and can handle it. Or teenagers that are thinking about going in the army or wanting to be a soldier. If you're not the greatest reader this book is easy to read and to follow.

Summary: Boy in Battles
Review: A Review by Seth

The book Soldiers Heart is about a boy named Charley who goes to fight in the Civil War. He is a 15 yr old boy that lives with his family and leaves to go fight. Through out the war he writes letters and sends money back home to his family for food and supplies. He was interested in what was going on but realizes that the war was not something that was fun or interesting. He fights in Battle of The Bull Run and many other battles on the east and southern part of the United States.

Three things I liked about the book were the descriptions, characters, and the fact that it was about the Civil War. The descriptions that they have were really good. It talks about how the people die and all the fighting and shooting. As an example: Charley helps out a dying soldier by giving him a gun to shoot and Rebels that come in. The description was of his wounds and the blood. The characters were pretty good. You get a sense of reality when they talk and do things like the battles. It tells you what the people look like and how they act. Like during one of the battles he says how the Rebels are charging and screaming. The last thing I liked about it was the fact that it was about the Civil War. It to me is a really good book about the Civil War because not many other books will go into detail about the hospitals and patients. It seems like the book comes alive.

I would recommend this book to people that love descriptive books or just books that are easy to read. This book has everything I like in it description, war, blood and gore, and lastly a real story.

Summary: A great read....but a little disappointing
Review: For the middle school level, Soldier's Heart is a great book. At the time I read it, I was also reading another war book, All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque. Although Paulsen's book pales in comparison to the classic war novel, the images conjured up in Soldier's Heart were just as graphic and horrific. The theme of the lost innocence of youth is shared between the two novels. Unlike All Quiet on the Western Front, however, Soldier's Heart continues on after the war to show what has become of Charley and how he lives with the scars brought on by the war, which I thought added a different and interesting element to the story. However, there were a few things that made this book a disappointment. The prose was well written but it failed to show any deep emotion or any true sense of Charley's character. It was a short and fast-paced read, which may a plus for some, but I felt the book ended too fast.
I would recommend Soldier's Heart to middle school aged kids, or anyone who enjoys American History.

Summary: A must read for any civil war fans!
Review: This book was real interesting and it was really, really good! I love this book! You really feel like you're in the civil war along w/ Charlie. It was pretty depressing, but I liked it alot. Believe it or not, my fave part was when Nelson died. It was very well described and i was gunna cry (trust me, that takes ALOT!)! Very, very good book! A must read!

Summary: A Great Depiction of the Civil War
Review: The book "Soldiers Heart" is the best way of showing what the Civil War was like. No textbook or school teacher can show you this kind of realism. This book makes you believe you are actually in this story. Its a great story about a boy who gets in the army and follows him through the battles and after the war. It's a terrific book. I would definatly recommend this book because i know a good book when i see one.

Summary: Soldier's Heart
Review: This book was a very good book other than Hatchet this was the first book i've read by Gary Paulsen. I thought this book was an excellent book because it kept me interested in what was coming next. It was a well written book and it was very discriptive, I did not understand someparts and was a little on the dull side at times. I would suggest this book to anyone who has a good imagination and likes to use it, also if you like books by Gary Paulsen, read this book!

Summary: Soldiers Heart
Review: The book I read was Soldiers Heart it was a fun book to read. Its about a boy who volunteers to join the army. He lives in Minnesota and it took place in June 1861 he fights in the civil war. He went threw alot of trouble and I thought he was crazy becuase he acted weird and went crazy also.

I liked the book alot becuase it was like a diary and it told alot of backround and also it told how the soldiers lived there life as how it was really bad and they had to eat cold food and all the men smoking and how bad they smelled not taking a shower for a month. The power and all the men who stood there in lines they waited until it was there turn to shoot. The civil war was one of the deadliest war becuase men just stood in lines walking and shooting and waiting to get shot.

I reccommend this book to anyone that wants to know about how soldiers went threw war and what they ate also it would be fun for people to read this book and it was awesome.

Summary: soldiers heart
Review: Soldier's Heart was about a 14 year old boy who lied about his age and enlisted in the civil war. It was very exiting and had a lot of action. It talked about how he didn't want to make any friends because he was afraid that he would lose them in battle. The book had a lot of blood and gore which was very cool. They even built a wall out of dead bodies to keep the wind out of the hospital tent. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes war stories. Charlie Goddard (the main character) was actually a real man and I think everyone should know his story.

Summary: Soldiers Heart
Review: I read the book Soldiers Heart. I am going to do a review it too. This was an okay book. It had a lot of gore. It was a good biography of a boy named Charley Goodard. He was only 15 year old when he enlisted in the first Minnesota Volunteers. This book took me to far away places such as Gettysburg. I hope you can find in any way possible that my review that I did will help you figure out what book to find for a kid.
