The main character Charley is not much older than high school students. And with most high school students across this nation having to study US History(Civil War), this would be a great book to start out the unit by either having each student read it or use it as a read aloud book during the unit. Charley is a farm boy, who's in charge of the family farm and supporting his family. Most boys that are raised on a farm could relate to his situation. The big question for Charley is whether he's going to have enough heart to stick it out through the war with the Minnesota Volunteers. You'll have to read this wonderfully written book about the Civil War to find out if Charley has a Soldier's Heart or not.

Even though he was to young to join, he joined anyway. You really see what Charley is experiencing through the book. It makes you feel like you are there and experiencing the exact same thing. This book is a good book for students to read, so they can learn more about the Civil War and what teenagers wanted to do during that time.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Its Good Review: Soldiers Heart by: Gary Paulson Written by Alex Marvin This is another great book by Gary Paulson. It is book on the American Civil War, based on the words of Charley Goddard's (a 15 year old boy enlisted in the Union army during the civil war) journal. The book delves deep into the feelings and hardships of being in the civil war. If you like action and a little graphic gore try this book. The setting is stated graphical giving the story a little pep of fun and excitement. So if you like short battle stories filled with lots of action buy this book today. So as not to give away the story I did not say how it ends, but it isn't one of those books with a good story and a bad ending, it is good all around. I believe this is one of the best books Gary Paulson has written and I encourage you to read it also.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: What War Is Really Like Review: My 10 year-old nephew Ian gave me this book to read recently, a heart-wrenchingly real account of one youth's experiences in the Civil War. The book details a teenager's life as it takes him from his Minnesota farm, through the hoopla of his Union Army enlistment and send-off, through the wonder and excitement of new places and faces, ultimately leading to his participation in some of the Civil War's most horrific battles. As we follow young Charley's exploits, we can see how he changes during and after each battle, until at times he (and we) can hardly recognize the human being in him. The message here is a universal one about war and what it does to those consumed and changed by it. As such, it has helped me to understand my own father better, a veteran of World War II. Veterans, especially those who saw battle, are changed forever by their experiences, many of which they will very likely keep to themselves forever. Those of us who have never experienced this (myself included), can not imagine how a life can be impacted as a result. How it can turn a young boy in his early 20s, like Charley Goddard, into an old man. How the memories will always be there. The succinct prose employed in this short book (only about 100 pages) makes it a quick read for adults, and young people should have few problems with it. Descriptions of the battlefield experiences are graphic and to the point. At times, they become almost clinical as one sees Charley becoming more and more detached with each battle, with an increasing focus just on surviving. You will participate in the Battles of Gettyburg and Bull Run, and be so thankful that you do so from the safety of your home. Nevertheless, these are real people and you feel their pain. A thought-provoking book appropriate for most age groups except the very young, I recommend this book most highly.

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Real War Review: I wouldn't consider "Soldier's Heart" to be one of Paulsen's best works, but for what it was, it sounded so true, which made it great. 15-year-old Charley doesn't exactly know what this great war between the states is about; however, he lies about his age and goes off to fight, believing that it's something exciting, and not worth missing. At first the war is just an adventure to him, with rides on trains, bad camp food, and pretty girls waving at him. But after his first battle, he realizes that war truly is war - and Charley is no longer a boy. This book, though only one hundred pages, was really a great Civil War novel, that showed plainly how utterly stupid and terrible war is. It was based on a true story, which really adds to it, too. I'd also recommend "Rifles for Watie", by Keith, and also, "The Boy's War", by Murphy, which would go well with "Soldier's Heart".
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Historical Fiction at its best! Review: I don't have much to say about this book that's not praise. An easy-to-read book, Soldier's Heart is a story that I recommend to all ages! I don't remember much about it, but all I can remember is that I loved it! A recent novel, I saw it flourish at a Scholastic book fair and at so many stores. A must read for Paulsen fans!
