Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: A must read for anyone who loves cross country Review: I am a high school cross country runner and I couldn't put this book down-in fact, I finished it at one of my meets before I went to race! It captures the joy, the pain and the magic of running cross country. The reader experiences the emotions of the team firsthand. Chris Lear couldn't have captured the team aspect of cross country any better. This is an amazing story filled with the emotion of running and being part of a tightly knit team. I recommend it very highly to anyone who loves running.

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Fast-paced inside look Review: I am a recreational marathon runner (oxymoron?) who is a bit of a running geek. This book is amazing. A review I read somewhere said author Chris Lear was inspired by John Feinstein's "A Season on the Brink." This book is more of an insider's view than that. One gets the feeling that Lear really knows the runners and coaches and shares their thoughts. The writing is great, the chapters short and Lear keeps the reader hanging on. Tough to put this one down.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Runners' Alert- YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK Review: I am an adult distance runner with a high school son (15) who runs cross country. I ordered this book for myself and he grabbed it the minute it arrived. He read it in a week, which is an amazing thing for my computer-oriented son who generally avoids reading for pleasure. I just finished the book and believe it is an outstanding account of the rewards and heartbreaks of top-level collegiate running. I could not put this down. I cried at the tragedy this team endured and rejoiced at the successes. I believe this book is a true gift to my son and any young runner who aspires to greatness. I now know why a poster of Adam Goucher is on my son's wall. Chris Lear conveys the patience that is required by runners who, after being high school stars, might have to train through long periods (even years) of no improvement, injuries and crushing disappointments. He also conveys the impact a coach such as Mark Wetmore can have on a young runner's growth as a person and an athlete. You probably have to have more than a casual interest in running to really appreciate this book, but I believe it will touch and motivate both competitive and recreational runners. If I were a high school or college coach, every one of my runners would read this book!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Great Book, but a bit monotonous Review: I found this book to be very inspiring and hard to put down. In fact my running suffered from having too little sleep! However, I the author glosses over a number of things I would have really liked to hear more about, such as the diet of these cross country runners (only mentioned a few times) and especially the reasons for the training performed on a given day. In many cases, the latter is referred to, but never explained in more detail. Overall, I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in running XC, middle, or long distances.

If you love running you will absolutely love this book. I had the best week of training while I was reading this book. It is very inspirational and makes my training feel easy by comparison. Excellent writing, excellent story and a great look inside the trainig of a Div I cross country team.

Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: A very motivational book! Review: I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. This book followed the 1998 University of Colorado X-C team and it mainly focused on Adam Goucher there star runner who recently ran in the 2000 Olympics for the 5000m. It was very interesting seeing how a Division I X-C team does workouts and what they have to go through to make the Varsity team. I never imagined they would run over a 100 miles a week when they are racing only 10kms. Maybe that is why they are such good runners. It was a little hard to keep track of all the characters in the book, but on the whole I enjoyed the great detail the book went into regarding the training runs and the workouts the team did. I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who is or ran x-c. Maybe if I increased my own weekly mileage my own running times would get faster?
