Rating: Summary: An overwhelming emotional experience Review: Pat's book was an overwhelming emotional experience. I've read it 3 times already. Probably what makes the book so special is that her signature is just inside the cover!
Rating: Summary: A Q&A with Pat Summitt Review: Q: Where did the Definite Dozen come from?A: I wanted to come up with a system that would in some way be simple. But what I really wanted our players to understand was that it's about more than basketball. It's about how to make a commitment to a team, but it's also about developing life skills and preparing for life after college. I wanted to lay out guidelines for all phases of your life. Q: What's the most important ingredient of the Definite Dozen? A: The most important ingredient I think is discipline. Discipline to do things that aren't fun. To work when you don't feel like it, and to straighten out difficult problems. At Tennessee we have discipline on the floor, and in the choices we make on and off the court. Q: This may be the first motivational book with a story about going into labor on an airplane. Why did you include the story of your son Tyler's birth? A: (laughs) I shared the story because so many people have asked me about it and written about it and talked about it. And because it reminds me to slow down. I always think I have time to do one more thing. I tend to feel that there's something more I need to be doing. I think I can do everything. In that case, I thought I could get in one more recruiting trip But that story is also about my determination to get home, and my loyalty to my husband R.B., and my family and Tennessee. Tyler was not going to be born in Virginia. Q: Has being a mother changed how you work? A: Being a mother has made me more aware of and sensitive to basic human needs. In other words Tyler has taught me a lot about love and patience, and the daily exercise of those things. He needs love, attention, discipline, flexibility. Its about understanding what kids need. And I don't think adults needs are too far removed from that. We have the same needs. We just hide it a little better. We all need love and direction. He just reminded me of it. Q: What keeps people from succeeding the way they would like to? A: Too many people are born on third base and think they hit a triple, as the saying goes. Life for a lot of people has been soft and easy. They've never had to work hard and sacrifice. And that's how you gain success, that's how you see what it takes. Success does have a price. If you haven't sacrificed, you don't understand that. Also, I think some people fear failure or fear commitment. It's more than they're willing to give. Fear of failure keeps them from sticking neck their out. Q: Have you ever failed at anything? A: I've failed at one or two things personally, but I don't want to talk about that. I have lost a lot of ball games. I've made a lot of mistakes. Tennessee played in seven final fours without winning a championship. So yes, I've failed. Q: Are you a different coach now than you were when you lost those seven championships? A: I've changed with maturity and experienced.. I think winning five championships has taught me how to repeat it, it's prepared me for making that kind of run again. Maybe it took the edge off. Once you've won, you don't feel like "Oh my gosh, I have to win." It used to be a goal for our program. Now it's an expectation. But we don't feel that if we don't win, we've failed. The thing is to strive, and to learn from mistakes. You can't give up. If you fail in the short term, you think okay, what will I do differently the next time? Q: How does pressure affect performance? A: It can or will affect performance if the focus is solely on winning. In anything, your focus should be on the task at hand. On execution and daily commitment. In basketball we talk about one possession at a time. Don't focus on the end result. As far as helping people with pressure, I try to be what they need, whether a teacher, or a positive leader. You can demonstrate so much through communication, body language. You don't say "Oh my God, we have to win." Q: Are women becoming more competitive? A: Yes. We're gaining more experience. Also, it's socially acceptable now. It's okay, and even appreciated and applauded. It's becoming the thing to do. It's no longer looked down on or frowned at for a woman to be assertive. Q: What is Pat Summitt really like? A: There's no better way to find out than to read the book.
Rating: Summary: It really works! Review: The day after reading this book: I woke up at 5:00 am, rode the bike around the block, and upon returning proceeded to paint the entire north side of the house. A job that had needed doing for nearly 4 years!
Thank you Pat and Sally!
Rating: Summary: Candid Look at a Motivating Master Review: This book is not only an intriquing look at the approach of a master motivator, but just as important (perhaps even more) it gives insight into how she became that way. I wasn't necessarily a huge Summitt fan before I read the book and wasn't necessarily a tremendous one after reading it either. However in reading this book, I do have a incredible respect for her, her insight into the human psyche, and the principles that make her successful builder of teams and young ladies. Kudos to Sally Jenkins and Pat Summitt for a candid, informative book and a great read.
Rating: Summary: Success At Its Finest Review: This book reinforced for me the basic fundamentals of success. Working for a highly successful hotel, which has garnered many awards and achievments, I found the same basic philosphies which we practice in this book. It is great reading for those who are looking for success in any and all that they do, and for those who have found success and wish to continue along the path!
Rating: Summary: Motivational, inspirational, informative. Review: This book showed a person the way to progress in a positive manner. These 12 steps can be used in all areas of life, not only sports. I bought a book for each person in my office. Not to preach, but to motivate and inspire. This wasn't about basketball, but about the way to achieve.
