Rating: Summary: A Respectable Achievement Review: What I liked so much about this book is that it gives a fairly accurate reflection of Gracie Jujitsu. While other books on the topic of various martial arts come short to fully explaining what their methods and techniques are, this book follows through on its promises.
What makes this book great is the attention to detail and will be a wonderful addition to every serious martial artist.
Rating: Summary: Definitive Jiu-Jitsu guide Review: I've read several Jiu-Jitsu books. This one is by far the best out there. The Gracie's are the Kings of the "Sport" and their presentation and graphical depictions of each move is outstanding. I frequently refer to the book before I go to the dojo. Simply the best.
Rating: Summary: Very interesting Review: In a self-defense situation, I definitely don't want to be on the ground because of the risk of being stomped out or being tangled up with one clown while his buddies tee-off on me. As primarily a "stand-up fighter", I'd rather take my opponent out by feeding him a knuckle sandwhich or a nice hard kick, followed by slamming him/her through GOD's green earth with a throw.Of course that is my best case scenario. Unfortunately, most self-defense situations don't work out that way - they are not on our terms. We didn't intiate the confrontation, but rather forced into it. What if you're tackled to the ground? Can you honestly say you know how to fight on the ground? Doesn't it make sense to know something and not need it, rather than to need it and not know it? However, I have one little gripe with this book. I'm not buying into that most fights end up in a ground grappling situation. Maybe they do in a submission wrestling match or a NHB fight, but not in the street. The fights that I have seen or have been in, someone got knocked down but they were usually kicked and stomped - not grappled with. The pictures are in full-color, and very clear. Every technique is explained in detail. In my humble opinion, you really can't go wrong by adding this to your library.
Rating: Summary: The book we were waiting for Review: First of all: with the mental and body conditioning of Gracie Bros, you may fight an ogre even with chopsticks. But, as a self defense instructor, I have to say that these are not the real fighting tecniques Gracie Bros took over the mats all over the qorld, ruling in free fight championships. Anyway, this book is worth its cost, and each serious martial art practioner should read it, as it's clear and with some hint about the REAL Gracie fight method.
Rating: Summary: Instant classic with a production glitch. Review: I've been a student and practioner of self-defense/LE tactics since the mid-60's, but my knowlegde of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is limited to viewing and practicing several of the video-tapes that were marketed following the Gracies' victories in competition. I've been waiting for a book, and this appears to be "The Book." Much material with good photographs. The glossy background may make reading difficult for some, and as one reviewer noted, it can be difficult to distinguish one man from the other when on the ground, both wearing white gi's. Now the production glitch. In my copy, begining just after page 48, pages ~49-65 are upside down and in reverse order. It is if someone cut the pages out beginning at 49 and ending at 65, then turned them upside down and reinserted the whole into the book. One can still read it by finding page 49 and turning the book upside down, but it mars a great book. Hope the publisher discovers and corrects the problem in future printings.
Rating: Summary: Fairly detailed. Good book. Review: It would have been a big mistake if the Gracies tried writing this book on their own and it would have been a greater mistake if the co-authors weren't experienced students of the art. Luckily proper steps were taken in the creation of this book. The result is a good text that can help those who study Judo and, of course, Gracie Jujitsu. Since the authors are promoting GJ some of their claims are a bit biased but I still think that every martial artist can benefit from studying their techniques. The main thing that makes GJ so effective is their particular attention to detail. It's a slow but thourough process that allows the student to cover more ground one step at a time.
Rating: Summary: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu : Theory & Technique Review: This is the best reference book that I am aware of. The writting is excellent, with great tips to help with techniques. Example: "when shooting for a takedown, imagine that there is a string tied to both your oppenents ankles. You must step on that sting when you penetrate." Actually it was written better than that, but I don't have the book now because everyone wants to borrow it so I am back on line buying another 2. My 11 year old son whom is wrestling now immediatlly improved his take downs with that simple tip. Even on techniques I have done for years have great small but excellent tips on how to improve them.
Rating: Summary: An Excellent Representative Text, A True Kyohan Review: This book is not only excellent in terms of information, but it is truly a remarkable example of how a book should be published and formatted, for the price, it is the handsomest book on the subject of a martial arts I possess, and I possess quite a few books on the subject, the authors take the reader on a guided tour of BJJ with a structered approach to avoid confusion and misrepresentation of technique, the explainations are clear and concise with plenty of practice material for both the laymen and the adept, they have written a masterpiece that will endure an age, just as Kodokan Judo did for the Judoka, so will this book for the current generation of grapplers. Kudos to the authors for this fine book, I strongly urge all martial artists to study this book and its contents, that goes for American martial arts as well, boxers and wrestlers, you can't go wrong with these techniques.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: Finally, a book on BJJ written by none other than the Gracies themselves. As a student of BJJ, I am finding this very helpful.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book Review: This is a very good book. The techniques are well explained and superbly illustrated. I have been involved in the martial arts for 30 years and have volumes of material in my martial arts library. This is definately one of the best grappling books out there.
