Summary: Great for a beginner
Review: I workout all the time and I am constantly buying new health books and comparing them to each other and adding what i read and learn to my workout routine. This book is great for someone who has not picked up a weight in their life. For someone who is intermediate or advanced its not worth the money. Yet i bought it anyway just to have in my collection. If you really wanted to get serious about it I recommend "arnolds encyclopedia of bodybuilding" it is by far the best boook for adding muscle and trimming down. (be advised Arnolds book is for those who really want the info to buff up)

Summary: Enlightening
Review: I've been working out on and off for many years, since I was in high school, and I've always followed the plan that I pieced together back in my days of working out with friends in this garage or that garage. This book dispelled many of the myths that I grew to believe and provided informed scientific information that I can quickly and readily apply. I've completely revised my routine based on this new information. I also like the fact that the book is aimed at regular guys, i.e., not would-be and/or professional body builders. I'm glad I bought it.

Summary: Awesome Program and Reference Guide
Review: I've tried several programs and routines, and those outlined in this book are the best I've seen. The illustrations are clear; the reason I gave 4 stars is because a few of the lifting routines are wrong and could be injurious.

The diet section is well done, and quite up to date. The recipes are average at best, however the general dietary guidelines are helpful.

Light years better than Bill Phillips, the lifting routines are tough, concentrated, and effective. The alternate workouts hit every major muscle group 2x a week, and target specific muscles in approproate volume and frequency. I recommend without qualification the purchase of this book, especially for those who are relatively new (0-2 years) to bodybuilding.

Summary: Good Guide for Beginers
Review: If you're looking for a good book on bodybuilding this is the one. It has plans for beginner, novice, and advance people. It also has good info. on burning fat and nutrition. And just on a personal note diet does play a key role in bodybuilding I learned the hard way.

Summary: Another Good Book from MH
Review: Men's Health regularly puts out fitnees books aimed at men and this one is no different. It's a straight, clear program that focuses on getting in shape, primarily to attract women. It has different levels of intensity for the various exercises and sections for every body part. It reviews nutrition and other aspects of fitness, with plenty of recipes and humor.
It offers a 12 week program of exercise and diet designed to get a man in shape. If you follow it, it will be in better shape than when you started. It's that simple.
On the negative side, the program focuses on looking in shape. I believe in functional fitness, defined as being able to do what is necessary in different situations. I had a friend follow this program and while he looked in shape, he couldn't run 3 miles in less than 25 mins. nor swim, nor do 15 pullups or various other tests that I devised.
This book is good if you want to be "eye candy," but if you want to be physically ready for anything, there are better books.

Summary: Well, yes, but ...
Review: The authors' diet and exercise recommendations are sensible and presented clearly, and any man who follows them (to any degree) will improve his health and well-being. However, I have several problems with this book: (1) It often seems to veer into the "all or nothing" thinking that dooms many diet/exercise plans from the start -- either you follow this regimen religiously and develop a perfect body, or you might as well forget it. The fact is that doing ANYTHING to improve your diet or ramp up your exercise regime is good for you; it's better to do something than nothing. (2) The "hard body" ideal is not one that most men should or can aspire to (any more than most women could aspire to looking like the latest supermodel), and it's unrealistic to hold it up for emulation. (3) As a woman, I personally find a "hard body" unattractive. I enjoy being with a man who's fit, healthy, and comfortable with himself. But as for someone with buns of steel and cast-iron abs ... I'd rather go to bed with a ham hock.

Summary: Good book, but some spaces to be desired
Review: The style of this book manifests a platter of techs--divided into intro, intermediate and advanced. It also includes the food plan tailored to weightlifters' interests--this is a great plus. However, lack of cross-refernces for numerous exercises tarnishes this book from being a handy refernce. If you have been a gym rat while suffering stagnant progress becuase of your diet, this book is a best fit.

Summary: Addictive!
Review: This book changed my life. Having started as a complete novice, Iam now 4 months into the training program and have never felt or looked better. This book is complete in itself - no other reference is necessary. And this is not only about putting on bulk - it's about mental well being as well. However, let me warn other readers not to expect huge changes in 12 weeks. Body building is a long process that requires patience and tons of dedication. However, once you're into this program it's difficult to quit. It's like drug addiction!!

Summary: good
Review: This book essentially tells you how to work out and eat healthy. Proper technique is illustrated for a wide variety of exercises, along with simple advice about how not to injure yourself, how much weight you should lift, how often you should workout, and some recommendations about which parts of your body you should focus on (for instance if you want to be more intimidating, shoulders and chest; if you want to have better sex, thighs and abs).

The information on stretching and cardio routines is simple and straightforward.

As far as I can tell, the diet information presented here is controversial only because there are so many diet fads and supplements and so on. People make a lot of money pushing this and that, but I don't think any of them have Men's Health in their pockets. It seems reliable, and I followed it for about three weeks, and it worked quite well.

Hey, after two months I can see a difference, and I think the ladies can too. Money well spent.
