Rating: Summary: A Timeless Read Review: I noticed that my mother was using the paperback edition of this devotional to write little prayer requests and thoughts in the margins. This prompted me to buy her the journal version of the devotional which gives her much more space to write and includes the same powerful devotionals. It was a great gift!Another great idea is the "Devotions for Morning and Evening With Mrs. Charles E. Cowman : The Complete Daily Devotions of Streams in the Desert and Springs in the Valley". Even though it is a little harder to find, my mother claims that the evening devotionals which are taken from Cowman's "Springs in the Valley" are just as moving as the Morning devotionals (taken from "Springs in the Desert"), if not more so. I have been reading the paperback devotional and I enjoy it greatly. It is non-judmental and very loving. My fave devotional!
Rating: Summary: An absolute goldmine of devotional readings! Review: I own many devotional books, but this one is my favorite! This classic book, released the same year as Oswald Chambers' "My Utmost for His Highest", has been edited by James Reimann. It maintains the original beauty of the language and ideas while making it more reader-friendly for the readers of today. Mrs. Cowman used many sources to come up with her the readings in this wonderful book. There is a list in the back of all the people whose works she had read in compiling this devotional. In my opinion, one of the most useful features of Streams is that it has a Scripture Index. If you are studying a certain book of the Bible or specific passage, you can find out which days' devotions contain discussion of that particular Scripture. I lead a small group Bible Study in my home and I use Streams almost every week to gather information on the chapter we are studying. Streams in the Desert also has an Index by Contributor and a Subject Index. I have given this book as a gift several times to people going through difficult times. People tell me that God really used this book to speak to them during their time of need. This devotional isn't just for people going through difficult trials -it is an excellent daily devotional on it's own. Whether you use this book in your daily devotions, or for researching specific passages or topics, this is a must-have for any Christian's library! The CD project by the same name is an excellent album also. I have wanted to write a review of this book for a long time, but have hesitated because I knew that I could not do it justice. Please order this book ... ... now and be blessed! You might want to check out my other reviews of Christian books and music. God bless you!

Rating: Summary: "The Lord speaks to me on a daily basis through this book" Review: I was first given a copy of "Streams" in 1992 by my close spiritual friend who helped this ex-Catholic girl start in a journey in learning to read and understand the Bible and Mrs. Cowman's book was such an uplifting and insightful learning tool that it is still a part of my daily devotions and I have also given several copies to other friends who have been at the start of their spiritual walk. It is absolutely THE BEST!! I praise God for putting this book in my hands.
Rating: Summary: Comfort for Hard Times Review: I was given this book while undergoing extensive chemotherapy for stage four cancer and found it to be a wonderful resource for anyone going through difficult times. It is full of comfort and hope, while never minimizing the difficulties of sustaining faith in the face of human calamities. I now buy it four or five copies at a time to give to other Christians who are facing hard times of any sort. Highly recommended.

Rating: Summary: A book of support Review: Mrs. Cowman had a dream: Her and her husband dream about becoming missionaries and brining the gospel to the Far East. Everything seemed to be going according to plan when her husband had a devastating stroke. Instead of evangelizing, she spent the next decade of her life being a nurse at the bedside of her ill husband. It is the sort of experience that tempts you to give up serving God. You may even question what type of providence it is that plays what appears to be a sick joke on you and your loved ones. Instead, Cowman battled it out each day with her nursing obligations and her faith in God. It was far from easy. She clung to every scrap of inspiring poetry and every uplifting saying she could get her hands on. Eventually, she gathered them together in this book. As I read these devotionals, I get the feeling that the author was able to get through this experience with her faith intact but there is a sense that her heart was always broken afterwards. Sometimes, the words here seem like someone trying to convince themselves of the divine wisdom of something that they can barely accept. Hers was a hard lot and this book will be of most use to someone suffering a similar long term disappointment.
Rating: Summary: Priceless in troubled times. Review: My brother-in-law gave me this book during an especially hard time in my life and it was a Godsend. I loved it so much that I bought a paperback one for work. As we all know, work can be a really grueling time when you're heart is hurting. I'm back today to buy some more of these for the people I care about. Buy this book. It saved my broken heart.
Rating: Summary: Inspiration and Comfort for a Lifetime Review: My grandmother was an ardent reader of the Bible. For the last thirty years of her life,(She lived to be almost ninety-six,) she was often found reading her favorite devotional books, as she sat on her huge Victorian bed, her smelling salts and her handkerchiefs by her side. She left me this book. It is for me,a symbol of her infinite wisdom and goodness, always provoking the memory of her unconditional love. In the last year, I pulled the worn book out of a box, where it had lain for over ten years. Its outside was shabby, worn, and the binding was practically broken. The minute I opened it, I sensed its magic and power. It is never far from me now. In this last year, when I have had many trials and tribulations, it has comforted me, encouraged me, and kept me strong. I highly recommend this book, especially the Anniversary Edition in Mrs. Cowan's own words. A book of exceptional power, written with passion and poetry, Streams in the Desert deserves a permanent place on the devotional bookshelf.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful! Encouraging! Review: Streams in the Desert is one of my all-time favorite books. Commit to reading the devotional articles daily, and you *WILL* enjoy a truly blessed year. In an age when there are so many books to choose from, Streams in the Desert is substantial, not fluffy, and will help build character in your life.
