Summary: Well written. Good Perspective!!
Review: I purchased this book for the main purpose of having a gift idea for my son's father. The book is written from the heart and after reading it I received a lot of new perspective. However, I would not consider this is an appropriate book for someone that is struggling with their identity as a father, rather a book that will add some enlightenment and comfort to someone fairly grounded. I didn't agree with all of the themes. As an example, under the chapter of religon, I gather that although Mr. Nerburn considers himself a spiritual person, the purpose of God in his life is more of a mystical being providing comfort and direction. The chapter on sex was very well put together. His letter encourages alot of reflection about the feeling behind the act and adds a lot of perspective to the pitfalls waiting for those that don't understand and/or respect the act and especially the person whom you've chose to share this wtih. This is an area so often overlooked in books which try to encourage parents. I highly recommend this book, but like any book of this kind, filter the information as it applies to your life.

Summary: Pure Crapola
Review: La La La La...just a lot of empty rhetoric that has no value to kids anywhere. My dead father has more wisdom in his stale stools than any of the essays in this book. I say, "Seek a better book."

Summary: Outstanding, touching book
Review: Nerburn's "Letters to My Son" is probably one of the best books on masculinity that I've read. Believe me, even though Nerburn's quiet and nurturing style of writing is much different than that of Robert Bly and Sam Keen, his words are just as powerful. I read quite a bit, and fully believe that Letters to My Son is right up there with Iron John and Fire in the Belly. This book is probably one of the undiscovered gems in the literature about men.

Every father should read this book, as should every son.

Summary: The perfect gift
Review: Over the years I have had read numerous books of this nature, but always find myself returning to read a section, a paragraph or a few pages. A wonderful book that I have had the opportunity to share with numerous friends. I think I have purchased at least 20 copies a gifts.

A must read.

Summary: Tough to Take
Review: This "inspirational and informative" book was not so easy for me to read. Mr. Nerburn takes a very interesting look at many things. In some instances it bothered me the way he looks at things. Other times, I was greatful for his insight. If you choose to read this, please do so carefully. Don't take it all to heart and believe that he has all the answers to life's great questions.

Summary: Letters to My Son
Review: This book is extremely well written and very insightful. A great book for any man or any father of a boy. The book is full of wisdom and advice that will provide insight to the reader on how to convey values to their son. It crafts solid explainations to difficult questions that men have throughout life.

The book gives the reader the tools to become a better person and to appreciate other people and life in general. It could be called "the gentle-mans coaching guide". I couldn't put the book down until I finished it and I can't remember the last time that happened.

Hats off to the author for crafting this magnificient work which gets us to stop and think about what is important. That's quite a feat in this "point and click" society.

Summary: Disappointed
Review: This book is nice, sweet, and somewhat insightful. But I wanted a book that spoke more of the relationship between a father and a son. The vast majority of essays/chapters in this book could have been written by anyone for anyone. For example, Nerburn warns of the dangers of drugs and alcohol, and extols the virtues of giving. But those lessons could have been taught by a mother to her daughter, a priest to a parishioner, or an uncle to a nephew. Many other essays in the book are similar in that they contain no unique perspective on the father-son relationship. (What does the "Power of Art" have to do with fatherhood?) This book reads like Chicken Soup for the Soul. In my opinion, the other reviews overrate this book.
