Summary: Touchy feely mumbo jumbo
Review: I am a down to earth person who sets and achieves my goals. This book did not give me anything tangible or practical to use in the real world.

Summary: Think Twice if You think Caroline Knows It All
Review: I picked up this book last summer, thinking it would help me figure out what I'm "suppposed" to be doing with my life. I thought the book would catalyze some kind of mystical process which would take me in to some heterofore unexplored part of my soul and give me answers. Well, not quite. There are a couple of chapters at the beginning of the book that are quite authoritative, scholarly (in that oh-so-educated Caroline Myss style) and intriguing. I did get something out of the first part of the book, sort of. Then she descends in to all this archetypal rigimarole (complete with a handy, exhaustless auxillary in the back in which you can analyze various archetypes, to see which ones describe you). You're supposed to dig in to your history to see which archetypes you've been acting out your whole life. Sounds good, if you have time for that kind of thing. I actually took out a highlighting pen and tried to figure out which ones were mine, to no avail. Oh, and we all have 4 Very Negative archetypes (the Saboteur, etc.) which follow us our whole lives, etc. You're supposed to pick 8 (the 4 Very Negative ones are already an part of your Automatic Inheritance) and then shuffle 'em, as you would a pack of tarot cards, and lay 'em out in 12 spaces, like the zodiac wheel. And then voila, you're done. You supposedly can learn your whole raison d'etre (or at least most of your patterns) from this process. I didn't, but maybe you will.

Summary: Blame the victim!
Review: I listened to tape 1 last night. And I have a Big Problem with her!

According to her, you Choose to be a victim!? because you need to work on Forgiveness? And the rapist, child molester, murderer is the one so filled with Love that s/he will force her/himself to do it to you?

This is just Blame The Victim swaddled in a New/Old Age blanket that stinks to high heaven!

Let's see if I can explain.

Caroline's assumption: Soul makes Loving Act of hurting others "that will forward the development of many souls."

So people who do hurtful acts are Souls doing Loving Acts?

So All rapists, child molesters, mass murders have Loving Souls?

Reaction: Let us thank all the rapists, etc, for the hurt they do to us.

Generalization: All evil is caused by Souls doing Loving Acts.

(I really wish Evil was that easy to understand.)

How does the pain that these people feel forward their development?

Why should the victim "take ownership and responsibility" for what happens to them unless it is their Fault?

And if it's the victim's fault, why are we punishing the rapists & murderers? Let's put the victims in jail instead!

I agree that people thinking of themselves as victims is not healthy, but the answer isn't to convince them that they were the CAUSE of it because what they choose to do at the time.

Too many people in our society blame others for their own acts and these people need to accept their own actions. But that is not the same thing as taking on the Guilt of causing Something
Bad to happen to you. Or believing that your daughter (or the Smart Girl) caused what happened to her.

I really think that her Zeitgeist can be devastating to very fragile minds grappling with what has happened to themselves, and can result in trying to "understand" the Bad Guy instead of punishing him...

Summary: Reader From Reading, PA
Review: I read alot of spiritual books but this one I could not get into. I don't feel it had anything inspiring or worthwhile to say about sacred contracts, I was just bored and got nothing out of it, I was kinda dissapointed I thought it sounded like a great book to read.

Summary: There in lies a trail
Review: I am not going to go in to any pretext that I know what I am talking about. I try to find my way through life to a better understanding. I suffer from depression and will look in to anything that looks potentially uplifting to the mind and spirit that isn't suspiciously reeking of quackery/con game. The whole Archetypes thing after investingating websites and reviews is indeed right out of Jung. That of course is a lot of time consuming exhaustive reading and if you are looking at self help books running out and diving into Jung instead is probably not the best immediate plan for the average person. So, I say this book is not a bad place to start. If you end up getting into Jung as a result great, all things take time. Yes Carolyn Myss writes books and gets money for it but thats no reason to condem her or anyone else who has a book sitting on a shelf, after all some one bought it.

Summary: A Confusing Mish-Mosh of a System. . . .
Review: Not a poorly written book by any means, this book's "system" for self-discovery is a complicated mish-mosh of Chakra, Astrology, and Jung, with a few groovy wheels and charts thrown in to assist in analysis.

There are certainly simpler ways to discover one's "calling" than to put oneself through the rigors of the steps outlined in this book. Approach this book with caution and only if you've got a lot of time on your hands.

Summary: A blueprint to your soul
Review: There are many books out there these days which claim to help reveal and understand our soul and our purpose for being here. Myss breaks the mold by offering specific guidelines and exercises to help discover this inner knowledge. Based on certain traditional psychological principals and some eastern religion Myss helps provide the framework to discover the answers to these questions most of us have. This is not a light read. This book requires time and effort. However, if you apply the material, regardless of whether you agree with its origin, you can't help but come away with new self knowledge and strategies for living a more empowered life.

I also highly recommend Intuitive Healing: Five Steps to Physical, Emotional and Sexual Wellness by Dr. Judith Orloff. Dr. Orloff offers a comprehensive and effective strategy for using our minds to create a more joyful life and to develop the capacity to heal our minds and bodies. It is a practical and entertaining book that provides these answers in a way that is fun to read and easy to use. The fact that it is so highly effective is a plus! Make it a nightstand "must-read".

Summary: Excellent Overview for Self-Understanding
Review: This is a review of the audio CD version

I've always been baffled as to why certain types of events or lessons keep confronting me. Myss' work, based on a healthy does of Jungian psychology, is that humans are made up of various standad and non-standard archetypes and it is through these frameworks that we view life and develop our personalities.

When she says that there is a reason why things keep recurring, the reasons being there is a lesson in there somewhere, she speaks authentically. That idea made sense for me.

While the audio is a nice explanation of here theories, there aren't any exercises for development or to take action. That is why I give the audio 4 stars. There are exercises in the book, which I recommend buying along with the audion.

Summary: why you do the things you do
Review: This book takes Jung's psychological concept of archetypes beyond anything Jung himself did and brings the idea squarely into the 21st century. This is a truly transformative book. It can help the reader change at a deep level and begin to understand why they do the things they do. Another favorite book from which I have gained much wisdom.

Summary: Sacred Contracts (audio)
Review: Dr. Myss, in my 'I' has always been the closest in perception that I've believed in for the past 30 years. Her latest, Sacred Contracts, is such a tool, blessed to give the reaching souls on this earth plane, a chance to understand so much of their spiritual journey, meaning and purpose, acceptance and comprehension of life's fantastic voyage. I salute her, and chosen spirits like her, Gary Zukav, Oprah (let's not forget her), and to say bravo to all of them, for the world is in such a place of 'be'ing that wisdom is the understatement of what IS. You can listen and re-listen to these tapes, and each time, find another part of the Whole.......being us all.
