Rating: Summary: Wonderful Book Review: Though a bit tough to read at times, it is a very simple way of changing ones outlook and life. I read this book several times since 1996 and am still doing as it says. The books ideas truly work. I would recommend this book to anyone trying to help themselves and better their surroundings.
Rating: Summary: A Very Silly Book Review: What the earlier reviewer said is true. This book does imply (among other silly things) that the only reason humans can't grow back a lost limb is because they've made up their minds that they can't. Never mind that in all of recorded history there is no record of a human growing back a lost limb. I wouldn't belabor this point if so many people weren't overlooking the absurdity of this book. This book is full of silly statements. At the beginning of the book the author claims that, while on board a cruise, he made up his mind that the captain would invite him to the captain's table. Sure enough, even though he never met the captain, the captain suddenly walked up to him and invited him to sit at the captain's table. That's funny, because many times I have strongly believed that someone would act a certain way, only to be surprised to see them act very differently than I expected. But I guess this author's beliefs are just more powerful than mine because his beliefs can control other people's behavior. Either that, or he just wants to sell his book. Why are there so many uncritical reviews of this book? I think the reason is that most people don't read it at all. They just put it on their shelf and expect the information in it to transfer over to their brain through the process of osmosis. They probably think to themselves: "Positive thinking is a good thing. This book is about positive thinking. Therefore, this must be a good book." So they never find out just how silly this book really is. I am 36 years old and I learned about 35 years ago from experience that just because I believe something doesn't mean that it will automatically come true. Turning our dreams into reality takes hard work and effort. I should think everybody would have learned that by now. But I guess some people never learn. This book also contains a perfect " out " for when its philosophy Inevitably fails. The author states that if someone else believes differently than you do, their beliefs will counteract your own. This is the perfect excuse because someone else will ALWAYS believe differently than you do. So the author can't lose! In reality this book is a perversion of the true classics of positive thinking. They state that positive thinking is just a first step toward success and that action must follow good intentions. In fact, the eminent psychologist Albert Ellis writes that "magical thinking " of the type espoused in books like this can actually lead to frustration and unhappiness. If you want to buy a self-help or motivational book, there are much better books than this one available from Amazon. Here are some I have found to be useful: Ellis, Albert Ph.D. 1988; Lyle Stuart How to Stubbornly Refuse To Make Yourself Miserable About Anything...Yes ANYTHING! Describes how we make ourselves unhappy through our thinking patterns and how to change them. There is a website devoted to Ellis' Rational Emotive Therapy. Fast, Julius Body Language 1970; M. Evans & Co. Reveals just how much people can tell about us through the remarkably subtle signals we send out through our bodies. Lorayne, Harry Remembering People; The Key to Success 1975; Stein & Day While the techniques outlined in this book don't work as well for most people as they do for the book's author (who is a natural and can remember hundreds of names at a time), with the appropriate applied effort, they will improve anybody's memory to a noticeable degree. Maltz, Maxwell Psycho-Cybernetics; A New technique for Using Your Subconscious Power 1960; Prentice Hall, Inc. Contains generally good advice for straightening out one's thinking. Dr Maltz wrote a whole shelf full of books based on his Cybernetics principles. Carnegie, Dale How to Win Friends and Influence People 1936; Simon and Schuster A true classic. Zgourides, George Don't let them Psych You Out! 1993; Loompanics Unlimited Tells how to handle some truly nasty verbal attacks as well as the common day-to-day assertiveness-demanding situations.
Rating: Summary: The greatest self-help book of all time Review: Words can't express the power in this book. I first read it when I was 16 and it changed my life. I've read it six times since. I'm now almost 50. Out of all the books I read, this is one of the top three that changed my life. I say get it, read it, use it, share it. It's a masterpiece. - Joe Vitale ...
Rating: Summary: How To Achieve Your Goals Review: would have been an ideal alternative title for this little gem! I was turned onto this book by a former Sales Manager when I sold water treatment equipment door-to-door. At the time all I could find on it was the audio tape version of this and that was enough to hook me. Bristol was an incredible man. His anecdotes are truly inspiring and uplifting yet realistic. This is not your typical new age airy-fairy positive thinking nonsense rather it is a solid approach to how to achieve your goals. Similar books/tapes in this vein are _Think and Grow Rich_ , _As A Man Thinketh_ , _Lead the Field_. Get this, study then practice the techniques and find out just how far in life you can go!
Rating: Summary: Definitely worthwhile.... Review: Yes, it's true, there's a lot of extra stuff here, and the techniques could have been condensed to a smaller number of pages, but the book does have some amazing and useful things in it. Especially the mirror technique. I knew intuitively that it was true and powerful when I read it, and it has proven to be so. You can probably skim through the book in a few hours and highlight some really useful stuff, (or read it and get a feeling of a self-development book from 1948 is like. It's actually a kinda sweet and positive book). At the low mass-market paperback price it's worth it...
Rating: Summary: You have to read this... Review: Your mind has the power, you only have to believe it.
