Summary: Find out "What's Wrong with This Picture?"
Review: Okay, I read it three times. I persisted through starting over several times ONLY because I respected the person who recommended it...and...Alas, finally succumbed to reading the book per its instructions. (No biggie, I have an above-average command over the English Language... yeah, right! Had to lay my ego at the door-found out that I DID have to look up some words: "Huh? That makes NO sense" "Oh-h-h- Now, THAT makes TOTAL sense!"...if you get my drift.) This author is so literate and precise, that to fully understand the material, I had to discover the exact, correct definition and usage of the word(s).

I was off and running. Well, whew! Finally, I didn't have to BELIEVE in anything to be able to get practical use from a "self help" writing! [Place forehead wipe here] Now, I confess that I've always been one in search of answers, and for those who don't give a blip about why, or how, they (or the rest of the world) tick; or how, or why, one can DO something about it...well, quite frankly, this book might not be of interest. But, for those readers who want some explanations, I'd suggest taking a serious read with this one.

Personally, the insight I gained from reading this book has unequivocally enhanced my life, and continues to do so on a daily basis-and I'm the "Doubting Thomas" of all "Doubting Thomases"! Quite honestly, since re-reading the book I've come to suspect that the author meticulously picked his words so as to force the reader into a precise understanding of what is put forth... apparently he really wanted people to be able to USE this information.

So if you're a person who wants answers, and the tools to go with them, this author has generously placed them before you... just for the pickin'.

Summary: Only an OPINION.
Review: Although everything sounds good, it is actually many theories or philosophies taken from others and/or common sense. Anyone who has gone to college would know this. However, if one can not think critically, then this is a very good book to mess with your mind and believe everything one reads. There is nothing in this book that I did not understand. I understand each and every word (meaning), this is only MY OPINION.

Summary: ANECTODAL EVIDENCE IS NOT SCIENCE
Review: Mr. Hubbard asserts that Dianetics is a modern "science" of mental health. But science doesn't put forth theories without presenting empirical evidence. Were Mr. Hubbard's results ever duplicated by an outside source? Were they ever published in a reputable scientific journal? The book doesn't tell us. He DOES provide endless bits of anecdotal evidence. But anecdotes-- no matter what their numbers-- are not scientific evidence.

And while neither debating nor criticizing Mr. Hubbard's socio-political assertions, an awareness of them may be useful in deciding if this is the self-help book for you. To cite two examples from Dianetics, Mr. Hubbard asserts that "any judge or doctor recommending an abortion should be instantly deprived of position and practice, whatever his 'reason'" (page 190). He also asserts that gays and lesbians (or "perverts" as Mr. Hubbard refers to them) can be demonstrated to have either overdeveloped or underdeveloped sexual organs (page 145).

There are better-researched and better-written books out there. Not recommended.

Summary: IT WORKS.
Review: I first read this book in 1969. For me it was a page-turner -- I stayed up late and got up early, to finish reading it. It laid bare the unsolved mysteries of the mind. While reading it, I concluded, "If this is true, this is the most important book I've ever read." I knew I HAD TO find out if it really worked the way he said it works. So I received some Dianetics counseling, and -- it worked BETTER than I expected or hoped. After that, I started using these techniques to help other people, and it did help them, as well. Maybe it could help you, too.

Summary: A Before and After ...
Review: Before I read Dianetics, The Modern Science of Mental Health, I was in pretty rough shape. I didn't think a lot of other people. I didn't think too much of myself. My physical condition was poor, my emotional state was unsteady and my future ... well, the future virtually didn't exist for me.

After reading the book and using the information within it, my life took an incredibly strong turn in a positive direction. Every aspect of my life improved, from the physical to the emotional. The future took shape and to this day continues to be bright.

The book not only opened doors in my life, it let me know that there were doors there to open. If you sit down and give this book an honest read, it will do you justice.

Summary: Amazing!!
Review: This book is amazing! If you want to know why you are not operating at your best, why your dreams seem consistently so far away from your grasp, and the secrets of why man mis -behaves - this book will give you not only the answers but will also show you how to get out of the trap of not realizing your full potential. I recommend this book and any of Hubbard's books to anyone interested in improving their lives or helping someone else improve theirs. Life becomes less of a mystery and much more manageable with this information. Definitely one of the most important books I've ever read.

Summary: Dianetics: Works for me! (and my family)
Review: I stumbled onto Dianetics at a time where I had all but given up hope for guidance that both made sense and had practical use across my life. Before Dianetics I was sick, taking illegal drugs, homeless much of the time and getting worse. I found a copy of Dianetics which struck me from the beginning as a book that had answers for I could use. Within days I had completed reading it and I knew that my life was heading upward and out of the muck. By applying the principles in Dianetics I was able to stabilize my life and begin to create a future for myself and those I love. Now I can proudly say that I have been off drugs for over 20 years, have married and raised a family where we are all doing well and applying the principles in Dianetics such that the cycles of negative repetition have not repeated. I never would have believed it possible had I not seen and experienced the results of Dianetics for myself.
