Rating: Summary: THE MOST IMPORTANT BOOK EVER WRITTEN Review: I not only read Dianetics but experienced the results of its processing. The life-changing realizations I've experienced, and the freedom that came from understanding, cannot be described. To fully understand the importance of this work, it must be experienced. This is science, not art. Don't skip any words you don't fully understand. Look them up in a dictionary. Those who don't understand the book don't get it.
Rating: Summary: Dianetics- evil or benign? Or maybe subject to each opinion. Review: Wowsers! Quite a little spectrum of viewpoints goin' on in this river. My own thoughts (and they come from one tenderhearted Christian) on this fascinating journey is that there is allot of pertinant and useful data when viewed in the right light... the "God help me, this is some pretty deep water here" kinda light. Not to sound crazy, or flaky (for any of you, my fellow Christian brethren will Know what I mean ), but I have "talked" to The Lord on several occasions in which I was experiencing situations not unlike those described by one of my colleages as locking oneself into a perpetual mindtrap, but I'm uncertain as to whether that person meant this to describe an acute and situational occurance (sometimes resulting in a panic attack) to which I am intimately familiar, or rather a long-term, never ending 'system' of percepions, of which I can weakly attest to. The upshot is, God always hears my despairing cries and undoubtedly has saved me from extreme psychosis, a point I was suffeciently driving myself to with all the fan- tastic and narcissistic whims I was applying to this technlogy. My main point- I would not undermine my above mentioned friend, who's dealt this nasty kaleido- scope of concepts for at least 15 years more than I- Is that, by the grace of God I was spared from the maze of traps that I was laying, not by the data in Dianetics, but by my own folly making use of data I only understood by fancy, and not bylogic. This indicates to me that there is a vast sea of good info buried inside this book, but should really only be used by people with a solid education in a neihboring field. These cats will have adapted emotionally, over their years of training, to stay grounded against floods of data and are better equiped to sort out different types of info and assign qualitative values. I guess my point is that no system of thought, or science is can misguided or evil to any degree higher than he that holds it. In retrospect I can only conclude that ol' L. Ron's only fault was to unleash this text upon a soc- iety alredy trembling under the A-bomb, instead of trying a little harder to gain acceptance from the medical community. At least then it could be properly regulated by the government(??!!) and be covered by insurance. Final thought: For those still intent on seeing what this book is 'all about'( and by no means whtsoever is this commentary an endorsement) I pray you take the hand and heart of Jesus with you for guidence. He's the only way out of this maze of life with or without Mr. Hubbard. Godspeed friends.
Rating: Summary: An owners manual to the mind Review: I think this book is great! It explains how the mind works and why people act the way they do. I certainly understand much better what is going on around me and why people behave the way they do. And it gives you a method how to clear your reactive mind and become more able and more intelligent. A *must* read!!!
Rating: Summary: This is a must for any intelligent human being Review: Dianetics might not be "an easy" read for some or a page turner per se. Yet it is the most important book about the human mind ever written. It has profoundly changed (for the better) my life and the life of many people I know. You owe it to yourself to find out what it is about. How many books have been on the best seller list twice in several years and have sold as many millions of copy? There is a reason. And the reason is that it gives you a basic and true understanding of yourself and others and all those "inexplicable" things most of us search answers for. Moreover, rather than just giving names to evrything that is non-optimum with you or your thoughts (like the psychiatrists like to do) it gives you tools to handle and improve whatever you would like to handle or improve. It is a must for every intelligent human being. If you use a dictionary - like the book recommends - to look up any words you do not understand, you will find it fascinating, not difficult to understand, and most important - extremely useful and applicable in improving your life. Find out what Dianetics is all about for yourself. Read it!
Rating: Summary: You have to know about this book. Review: Full of things you "always knew" but had no terms to describe. Someday, Hubbard's discoveries about the mind will be common knowledge, like gravity and the heliocentric solar system, and we'll wonder how on earth anyone ever thought the brain was the mind.
Rating: Summary: Why people have weird impulses is not so mysterious now. Review: After reading this book I could understand why people acted horribly, hurtful and stupidly. I realised there was something that came in and tangled thoughts and teared apart reason. I also realised that the people's whose thoughts were being tangled didn't know why. Dianetics sheds lots of light on why you have weird unexplained feelings of doubt and depression and fear. Although this is a serious topic, the mind, the author writes in a simple, clear way. He's quite funny in places and he certainly answered a lot of questions that were hovering in my mind.
Rating: Summary: A Very Amazing and Insightful Theory of the Mind that Works! Review: I have read Dianetics. I am a very sceptical person who has a BA in psychology. In reading this text, I fould it to be very insightful, and I have dicover through my own use of the technology contained withing its pages that it truly works. I suffered depression, anxiety, social withdrawal, and other problems in my life. In using Dianetics, I have broadened my scope and abilities of life. I recommend that everyone should read this book and try what it says for themselves!
Rating: Summary: IT IS IRRESISTIBLE Review: When I got this book and started to read it my electricity went off. I continued to read with a candle!! Other than its own merits, this book turned me to understanding of important predecessors like Lucretius, Paine, Spencer, Korzybski and so on. Avail yourself of this wealth of data; believe 'critics' not, for they only want to keep you dumb.
Rating: Summary: A Seminal Work; Still True After All These Years Review: I first encountered this book in the mid-1970s. I was real skeptical. (I'd studied western philosophy at the university and had also read and studied a lot of Jung, Freud, Adler, etc.) I bought the book but it sat on my shelf unread for close to a year. Finally, after my life started to nose-dive, I decided to give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised. Hubbard's vitality and humor as a writer, his breadth and depth as a thinker and his certainty of the subject was quite refreshing. This guy had a new ideas, and his bone-headed insistence that the techniques worked (with case histories to prove it) was unheard of in the field. This book is probably the best first-read of Hubbard's books on the mind. I've read several. I've also gotten quite a bit of Dianetics counseling, so I know what the man says is true. I have also met several "clears" and have found them to be quite sharp, effective, good people. Dianetic techniques were continually refined for over thirty years since the book was originally written. Nowadays it's very streamlined and fast. But the original techniques stll work well, and are still used quite a bit to this day. I think it's a testament to Hubbard's intellectual integrity, that in spite of the major refinements to Dianetics over the years, he kept the original work untouched and widely available. The techniques and the discoveries on which they were based are still valid and useable today.
Rating: Summary: Valuable information on living Review: I found that reading this book really helped me understand the people around me and give me some tools to work with. I had always wanted to help others and it also gave me an additional tool to do that.
