Summary: Yoga's a way of life.
Review: I'm only 18 and I can see this book being the core health routine for the rest of my life. Easy to follow, and almost impossible to strain oneself with variations from easy to extreme, it's an absolute training must for Rockclimbing or any other sport.

Summary: Best book for a good yoga program
Review: I've been through a number of yoga books, and this is without a doubt, the easiest to follow. With many books, the postures are described in detail, but you have no idea how to put them together into an exercise program. A program is what Richard Hittleman's book is all about. Calling it a 28-day plan is, I think, a little optimistic (I did the program applying three days to each of his days and still couldn't achieve 100% of the postures), but it's so enjoyable that it doesn't bother me in the least.

Summary: Great book, amazingly quick results
Review: I've followed the exercise plan in this book off and on since 1975 and always come back to it. It's the best way I've found to kick start a fitness regimen and regain flexibility. I like the fact it takes only 20-30 minutes per day and requires no equipment. It's amazing how quickly one's overall flexibility can return following this plan. I do wish, however, that the three day rotating exercise plan was available on a one page separate sheet for ease of use.

Summary: Great book on yoga - Great results
Review: I've had this book for many, many years and it is one of my favorite books on yoga. Whenever I stop exercising for a while and start to feel stiff all over - I fondly remember this book. And each time anew I am amazed how much more in only 28 days my body becomes flexible. There were times I wished Richard wrote a 365 day exercise plan, because often when I get to the end of the book, instead of continuing the practice, I stop doing the exercises. Then, later on, I return to it and start again from the beginning. In any event, if you want to become more flexible and like to have a wonderful exercise plan to follow, get this book. It's excellent! You, too will be amazed with results.

Summary: Perfection in 28 days.
Review: If you can breath and move in 28 days this book guides you into a different selfawareness and calm. I have given away countless numbers of this book with great personal joy. Enjoy! butch0063@bellsouth.net

Summary: Amazing Results... Just keep at it!
Review: If you keep at this program there are amazing results! Youlearn alot very quickly. I never seem to get all the way through theprogram, however. You have to be dedicated and do the postures every single day...

The only problems I have with the book are that there is not alot of emphasis on how to prevent injuries and exactly how to position yourself. I think some people who push themselves too hard could end up injuring themselves.

All that aside, there is alot packed into this little book, and if followed carefully, the program has absolutely amazing results.

This last bit has nothing to do with the book itself, but I include it because other reviewers wanted the information.

Where is Richard Hittleman these days? Sadly, Mr. Hittleman died of prostate cancer in 1991. The Yoga Universal Organization/Church that he founded continues on, however... In conclusion, I would enthousiasticly (sic?) recommend this book to anyone wishing to get into Yoga. Instead of the slick overproduced nature many contemporary exercise books have, Richard Hittleman's Yoga has an earthy honesty that you rarely see these days. (quite characteristic of early seventies hippyish non-fiction books!)

Good luck!

Summary: An excellent beginners resource for at-home yoga exercise.
Review: If you want a really good intro to the practice of yoga and you have at least attended a class with some instruction, this is a great book to get you started on daily exercise. It covers most of the primary positions you need to learn to work your way into more advanced postures. Furthermore, after 28 days of this program, you will have a new body! Try it!

Review: In 1970, I purchased Hittleman's 28 Day Yoga book at a flea market. I was 33 years old and already beginning to feel the effects of arthritis. It was all I could do to exit a car or bend down to lift the toilet seat. I was a rusty gate. Today at 67, thanks to following this simple 3 routine sets of asanas, I am able to curl 65lbs 10x's with one arm, run 3.61 miles daily, bike 34 miles both weekend days, do 100 pushups, and many other feats of strength that many men less than 1/2 my age are unable to do. I have added the Sun Salutation to my daily routine, as demonstrated by Rodney Yee, and Marie Winsors Pilate Teasers. Other than that, the three routines are perfect for what I have accomplished in my personal life. I have bought dozens of copies and given them to others. My 6 sons ages 40, 39, 30, 24, 20, and 17, also have followed this yoga regimen when they began to play sports. All became outstanding athletes in boxing, football, baseball, soccer, etc. and as well as outstanding scholars and US Army Officer Rangers. Does our family think this yoga system is worthwhile? We think it is a Godsend.

Summary: still number one for me
Review: In addition to the wealth of great info provided by the other reviewers (I highly recommend that you read them), I would like to add the following:

I can attest to the value of the practice by saying that I never felt better in my life than when I made this a daily practice. The benefits are holistic: physical, mental, emotional, spiritual.

Do follow his direction and stretch ONLY to your extreme. This extreme will increase in due time. Trust him.

Do consult with a doctor if you are having a problem with any particular area or areas of your body. You can very well cause more damage if you are not careful. You may need to omit something or approach it with a physician-recommended modification.

There are different approaches to or styles of yoga. This one is gentle and slow moving, causing the least amount of trauma to joints and other areas of your body. (See caution in above paragraph, however.)

Although I originally picked up the book after following the televised program, the book does document each of the asanas (exercises) very well by including a vast number of photos.

To facilitate following the three-day cycle of asanas-for-life that is printed at the end of the book, I copied them into a spiral notebook, using two lines per letter. This allows me to stand it up within my field of vision and read the now "large print version."

I did locate videos of the television series but decided that they were cost-prohibitive. Do an internet search on Richard Hittelman or Yoga for Life and you should find them.

I do recommend that you read the short essays after each day's practice. These are informative about the practice, lifestyle, philosophy and nutrition and serve to reinforce that the practice extends to benefit one's entire being.

Note: Cheryl, the "model" in the book, was also his student and the person to demonstrate the asanas on television. Joining her was another woman who was not as advanced. This served to encourage us neophytes who could follow along while watching one who was not too far advanced from us while aspiring to achieve the extremes that the other could assume.

Enjoy!
