Rating: Summary: Relaxing, healing both in spirit, mind and body Review: I bought this book many years ago when my son was born to help me lose weight the easy way. I was very young and had terrible post-partum depression. I started doing the stretching and breathing excercises and found I was not only losing weight, but able to deal with a new baby and an inattentive husband. Thank you for helping me through that time in my life. I have been looking for your book for the past few years because it was helpful and I have a very stressful job. Glad I found it again.
Rating: Summary: Simple, effective yoga Review: I discovered this book in the early 80's. I had just started working in NYC and was stressed-out to the max. I soon developed blinding headaches as a result of rigid neck muscles. Then Hittleman came to the rescue. Within 2 weeks of faithfully follwing the exercise plan, the headaches were gone, and as long as I do these exercises, they stay away!I have since tried other "brands" of hatha yoga, but I always come back to Hittleman. While other forms of yoga have flashier style (including Iyengar and "power" yoga) as well as celebrity endorsement, they always leave me worn out and frustrated. With the gentle Hittleman plan, I feel relaxed, stretched, and soothed.
Rating: Summary: Good for Every Decade Review: I first bought and used this book in the early 1970's, when I was in high school. It noticeably changed my body. I went on to take classes in yoga and continued through college. This book was so easy to follow and the routines so calming. Later in life I put on weight and again this book came to the rescue. After I had my children, it came in handy once again. The pictures may look dated, but it works. If you are studying yoga, get this book and any of Mr. Hittleman's books. He was the greatest.
Rating: Summary: An Old and Cherished Friend Review: I first bought this book in 1975 at the age of 15 and practiced religiously. I loved everything about this book! Easy to follow, great poses. It carried me through many years and 2 pregnancies. I became separated from my book and picked up several others on yoga that were horrible - I never could get back to following yoga again, just practiced what I remembered from this book from time to time. Lo and behold this book fell back into my hand at a used book sale and it was just like finding an old and cherished friend! I bought it and started doing my yoga again. For me this is the only place that yoga exists. I think you'll enjoy it too.
Rating: Summary: A great way to exercise the body and mind without stress. Review: I first used this book in 1978 while in a college phys-ed class. I found it to be an excellent workout for those of us who are not enthused by traditional exercise regimes. I wish I could find the larger format book that I used to have. It fell apart after much use. I now have the smaller paperback and find it difficult to follow along in. I need to get committed to this again because I know its the answer to many physical ailments and has the added benefit of mental stress release. I too would like to own a video.
Rating: Summary: Great Yoga Book, Even for Beginners! Review: I got referred to this book through a friend and as soon as I received it in the mail I thought it was kind of funny because it didn't look like your average modern yoga book for the New Millenium. The pictures and diagrams are all really old (from the 1970's - before I was even born), so I thought it was really corny and my initial reaction was "how good could this book really be with all the NEW modern stuff that's out there?". My question was answered in less than a week. I have never taken a yoga class in my life, I'm not a fitness nut and I'm not into al the trendy exercise programs. I'm just your average person, however I swear that this book will make your body bend and flex like you've never seen it do before. I went from being semi-stiff and tense, to becoming flexible and agile, relaxed and calm. I've tried other stretching books before but nothing delivered such quick and easy results as this book. So important lesson learned. NEVER judge a book by its cover!! The pictures may be cheezy but the actual content of the book is amazing! I highly recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: Probably not for very overweight people... Review: I got this book years ago when I was much thinner. In perusing the offerings of yoga books on amazon.com, I noticed this book was re-issued. While I found it useful and was able to do the poses years ago when I was in better shape, I would caution those who are very overweight (like I am now) to use extreme caution doing the shoulder stand and plow postures. These postures put too much strain on neck and shoulders--I feel that's true and have heard it said by yoga practitioners. I am on my way down the scale again and will use the book when I've lost enough fat to make the postures practicable for me. In the meantime, I'll do more standard stretching.
Rating: Summary: Oh, no...not again! Review: I have bought this book five times since 1975 - I have given them away, lost them in moving, just lost them...you name it. It is STILL the only yoga book I have ever read that is perfectly do-able and is not intimidating. It's a simple program, and the way the author breaks it down day by day is really helpful for my lack of "stick-to-it-iveness!"
Rating: Summary: The Best book to start with. Review: I have many Yoga books and videos and I think this book is by far the best book to start with if you want to learn Yoga. The instructions and the pictures are clear and easy to follow and the book is so well organized. You do Yoga every day for 28 days and you slowly learn more and more postures and you constantly review the one you learned so far, you just follow the plan for the day you are on and you don't have to flip the pages back and fourth. There are lots of books that deal with Yoga in more depth but they are often not so good for the beginner or not as clearly organiced as this one. The book ends with all the exercices organiced into three day practise routines which I have been using for many years with Good results, Highly Recomended. Also recomended Yoga Journal's Yoga for beginners.
Rating: Summary: Simply satisfied Review: I have owned this book since 1970.. I have purchased numerous copies over the years for friends, who find the simplicity and the ease of this particular program extremely satisfying and beneficial. From the most serious of "couch potatoes", to the most fit, the 'Day 1' page is an inspiration to begin 28 of the most important days of a new life. A great startup for those who have discovered that there is no "magic pill" for diet/health/beauty.Beautifully illustrated, all the directions are clearly written and photographed so you see exactly every move.It is the ideal answer for anyone with physical limitations or disabilities who may not be able to perform other types of exercise.I highly recommend this particular book.
