Rating: Summary: too many women take this book literally Review: I had to live with someone at school who took this book very literally, word for word, and really did believe that she'd been conducting her life in an entirely wrong way up until she bought this piece of feminist propaganda. If you want to think that you are oppressed simply because you are female and that partriarchy is the root of all evil in the world, then maybe this is the kind of narcissistic reading you require in order to get through the day. If you have any self-esteem at all, however, you will see this book for what it is, mildly amusing and thought-provoking but not especially intellectual or "deep". Archeptypes and mythology are neat to think about, but impractical if you regard them as role-models for personal conduct and everyday living. Get out of your head and live down in your body where you belong and common sense will carry you through the day better than this kind of self-help book that makes women feel sterile and only half-alive for not daring to be "wild" of their own accord.
Rating: Summary: Good things come to those who wait. Review: It took me about 2 years to finish reading this book. I consistently reached a saturation point after each chapter or two and had to stop. Only after digesting for weeks or months was I ready to read on. When I picked up again, the next chapter spoke directly to a current issue for me (sort of eerie). This suggests to me that to get a developmental effect, the book should not to be read in one sitting. If one is simply interested in reading a collection of myths and fairytales (without intending to do any inner work), then this is probably not for you.By the way, I'm 38, female, PhD in Management, married, career, etc. -- but I can see this book being useful to those on a learning journey regardless of age or background (or even gender). This book gave me a valuable, new lens for viewing myself and the world. In parts, I thought that "this stuff" would have sure helped me 20 years ago, but I don't think I would have understood it in the same way then. In parts, I thought that "this stuff" may help me 20 years from now because I don't fully understand it yet. I know I'm sharper today for having read it.
Rating: Summary: The most important book of all my life Review: Some women told me they have began to read WWRWW, found it interesting, but they didn't finish it. In my opinion, this isn't a book you can simply read: it happens to you, in some ways, when you really need it. It doesn't say anything new to a woman's heart, but it helps her recognize the things she has always known but she has forgot. It gives her the proud to be what she is, and I think this is the greatest help a person can receive. I want to say thank you to the author with all my heart.
Rating: Summary: A life-changing and engrossing book. Review: I was in an abusive relationship and this book saved me. It helped me realize that woman are stronger then they let themselves believe.
Rating: Summary: There Are A Lot Of Women Where are Either Running or Walking Review: This book gives an in depth analysis of a women's psyche abilities, capabilities and responsibilities. Dr. Estes' gift is greatly appreciated for all her hard work and research. Reading this book will either give you a better understanding of a woman or will enhance your curiosity if you're a man reading it. Splendid, enjoyable, humorous, sad, and excepting all describes this literary masterpiece.
Rating: Summary: Tell me a story, I love it, but don't overanalyze! Review: I think that this book deserves high credit being an original, as far as I know, in it's genre. I love the fact that the author was able to gather so many stories and myths from diverse cultures. The analysis was also thought provoking. But I think that I read this book too late. At 37 years old, a university graduate, married career etcetra I find her book a bit of a downer at times. The emphasis on how to get out from under the thumb of an abusive/domineering man, boss, parent, "friend", is a bit depressing. I think it's great for those who have been down-trodden to listen to Oprah and Rosanne and Sally Jessy Raphael and Hillary Clinton for that matter to learn truths about destructive interpersonnal relationships. But, although I applaud Ms. Pinkola's originality and thouroughness, it's not for me.What do you think?
Rating: Summary: Asa man I gotta say:simply dazzling!!! Review: This woman is a poet. She certainly knows the heart and soul of a woman. Thank you Dr Estes!!!
Rating: Summary: Unique look at the female persona Review: I was assigned this book as part of a college psychology of gender course, and was surprised at how quickly it read, and the emlightening points it makes. Although I do not attempt to agree with all aspects of Estes work, she certainly understands the connection made between women searching for their place and meaning in life, and the wild wolve archetype. A definate must-read for the "lost" souls in todays' world!
Rating: Summary: Not for the spiritually dead Review: If this book was for everyone, it would be suspect. It's not a one-size-fits-all tome, but for those of us it connects with, the connection is powerful. My introduction to the work of Dr. Estes came initially through her audio tapes, which in fact preceded the publication of WWRWTW. It's powerful medicine, so much so that I only am able to read a little at a time, and digest it slowly. I can't imagine sailing through this book as if it was a consumable like a pulp novel. It should be approached with the openness and reverence which is due matters of the soul and spirit. For me, it is a religious classic to be slowly savored. Linda Chapman
Rating: Summary: Assuming there's something "wrong".... Review: I take issue with so many people telling me what is "wrong" with me. The glut on the market of self-fix-it books astounds me. This is just another one couched in a camouflaging swirl of pseudo-feminist jargon. The myths are fun, though. I happen to think all myths surround a kernel of truth. Unfortunately it is possible to arrive at many distortions of truth through interpretation, just like this author. Bottom line? I didn't think much of the book. There is nothing new here. There is nothing "wrong" with me. There is very likely nothing "wrong" with you. We are not broken. We do not need fixing. We are merely being human and learning.
