Summary: Fantastic book
Review: If you could only afford to buy one book on Thyroid disease - this should be it! Now that it is also available in paperback, I will be buying two more (for my son & dauhter w/hypo).

This book answers just about every question you have about TD, plus some you hadn't even thought of. If you, or someone you know, has Thyroid disease - this is a MUST buy!

Summary: The Thyroid Solution:A Mind-Body Program
Review: I loved this book. I re-read it twice; made notes, and have informed many family members and friends with thyroid disease that this is a must read! As a patient, who had a hard time finding someone to diagnose my own hypothyroidism to begin with, it empowered me, to not give up. Even after my diagnosis fifteen years ago and subsequent Synthroid treatment, I have never felt "well". You start thinking that you must be crazy, if everyone says your hormone levels are fine...you must be fine! Finally, Dr. Arem explains why you may still not feel well after traditional Synthroid treatment, and he gives specific treatment options. Dr. Arem also addresses other diseases, that can occur in addition to thyroid disease, that are often overlooked by other physicians as "typical thyroid complaints". This book is good for people who have just been recently diagnosed with thyroid disease, as well as those of us who have been dealing with the disease for many years. And it will help to enlighten family members who live with thyroid patients.

Summary: A powerful resource
Review: When my doctor told me I was hypothyroid, my wife bought me this book. I'm usually very skeptical of books about health. I always wonder about the author's motives and underlying beliefs about health. I want straight, realistic information -- not hype or fads.
Dr. Arem's book is straightforward. It explains thyroid disease and its effects and treatments simply. After you read this book, you will be well armed to manage thyroid disease if you have it. You'll know how to work with your doctor to treat the disease, and you'll have effective strategies for coping with the disease's emotional and physical effects.

Update 10 Sep 2001: Knowledge gained from Dr. Arem's book has continued to help me work with my doctor in treating my hypothyroidism. I can "listen" to my body better to know whether my thyroid is "acting up," and can talk with my doctor much more intelligently about my symptoms.

Summary: Finally I can understand what is happening to me
Review: I am so grateful for this book. My doctor never really explained to me what hypothyroidism is all about. This book did. I have gained 80 pounds in four years since I have been diagnosed wth hypothyroidism. I had no idea what all of the changes were that could occur both physically and emotionally. Now I understand. This is a wonderfull book to share with a spouse or a loved one so that they can learn and realize that we don't just make excuses for the change in our emotional state as well as our physical. My husband has become much more understanding since we have shared this book. It was a Godsend.

Summary: Covers everything!
Review: This is one of the very best resources for the thyroid patient, or anyone involved with a patient. Covers not only general physical side of thyroid disease, but emotional and mental as well... not many books do this, and the thyroid can definately take it's toll on a person's mental state and sense of identity. I have found this book to be such an amazing resource, and an interesting way to find out the way other people are being treated for thyroid diseases.... I without a doubt give it five stars and recommend it to every thyroid patient I know.

Summary: The Thyroid Solution: A Mind-Body Program for Beating
Review: What an excellent book. I was recently diagnosed with graves' disease after years of suffering. This book nailed all my symptoms to the "T" and then helped me to understand what I have been going through all these years. I am glad to know that I am not crazy. Thanks for making it available. I do believe that many others could use this book even if they just suspect they have thyroid problems. I know, I kept testing in normal ranges when infact I had a very serious disease. It just took lots of pushing and not accepting their "it's all in your head" talk. Good luck to all. AJ

Summary: Simply spectacular!
Review: I read this book when I was first trying to learn about thyroid conditions and I have to say it has given me more information than any other book I have read. I was really impressed with the fact that the author is an endocrinologist, yet was not afraid to go against the average viewpoint of most endocrinologists. Dr. Arem understands that there is much more to diagnosing thyroid disorders than running blood tests, such as the TSH test, which most doctors seem to think is the gold standard for diagnosing these conditions. This book gives you all the information you need to determine if you have a thyroid problem, including hypo or hyperthyroid conditions. It has valuable information about what these conditions are and the various disorders associated with them. It is a definite must read for anyone with thyroid symptoms. This book gives you the ammunition you need to get a doctor to take your condition seriously even when your thyroid tests come back in the normal range. I recommend it highly to everyone who thinks that they may suffer from a thyroid condition.

Summary: A 20 year old's life--changed forever
Review: As a 19 year old suffering for two years with depression, anxiety, weight loss, memory loss, hair loss, suicide attempts, Dr. visit after doctor visit, and much more,my mother was in Barnes and Noble one day, looking through cookbooks and found Dr. Arems book in the middle of them all. She opened it up (knowing that the Dr's had "ruled out" thyroid problems for two years straight) and began reading his book. She broke down in tears, because almost every single story in his book sounded just like me. A month later I was diagnosed with Hashimotos, Hypothyroidism. The battle still goes on, but with God as my healer, Dr. Arem's book, and him as my personal Thyroid Specialist, I have begun to conquer this terrifying, life changing disease. Two years of my life went down the drain, because even after *27* blood tests, specifically for my thyroid, the Dr's were DETERMINED I didn't have a thyroid disease. They were sure that wasn't why I was suffering. As Dr. Arem's book clearly explains, it is very possible for this to happen. The chapter entitled, "Your Not Making it Up" is my favorite. After gaining over 50 pounds in three months, right before I left for college, I find that chapter very comforting. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is suffering from thyroid problems, and their spouses, friends, and loved ones. The disease not only effects the patients, but their relationships as well. A definate must have...I recommend it for everyone!

Summary: Frustrated about your thryroid? This the the book for you!
Review: I have been living with hashimotos thyroiditis for 18 years. I have been complaining to my Dr.'s off and on for years that I felt like I had symptoms of hypothyroidism, but they kept telling me that the blood tests were normal. After recently having a baby, my thyroid went crazy, and I basically had to tell my Dr. what I thought I needed. This book helped me understand that I was right! He goes into great detail about the fact that you can have a "normal" lab value and yet still suffer from low level hypo or hyper thyroidism!! I found a new Dr and have gotten myself at the other end of the "normal" range.

In addition, those of us with thyroid disease have never been told before that high cholesterol or mild depression can be symptoms of thyroid disease! This book describes all of the bodily functions effected by the thyroid AND what other diseases those of us with thyroid disease may be at higher risk for.

I can't stress enough how much this book described my life for the past 5+ years and how much better it had made me feel- I now understand so much better why I have felt the way I have and have a plan for working on the situation.

This is the best thyroid book I have ever purchased and strongly recommend it to anyone with thyroid disease!!

Summary: It's not all in my head
Review: I've just been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and have not yet started the standard Synthroid therapy my doctor wants to put me on. I can't believe the number of symptoms I have that can be attributed to this disease but am relieved to know it's not all in my head. I am very grateful that I found Dr. Arem's book and will be using this information to become a partner in deciding which medication I start treatment with.
