Rating: Summary: This is a manual, not a religous text Review: Final Exit does not discuss the spiritual and ethical issues surrounding suicide and euthanasia. Some have criticized Derek Humphry for not including such discussions, but I contend that author has acted appropriately: the scope of this book is inform others on how to effectively plan and execute the last moments of life. It would be presumptuous of the author to lecture his readers on their own faith. If you are looking for answers concerning the spiritual ramifications of ending your life, then you should refer directly to sources on which you base your faith. Concerning Final Exit's effectiveness as a manual, the language is clear and concise, the description of materials and their use is accurate, and the book provides you with adequate information to help you troubleshoot any problems unique to your situation. I left off one star only because some of the drugs mentioned in the book are next to impossible to obtain due to the termination of production by pharmaceutical companies. There are alternatives, but these will require a bit more effort on the part of the reader.
Rating: Summary: It helped my mom find the strength to pull the trigger Review: Final Exit gave my mother an excuse to leave behind four children and a loving husband. This book was on her bedside table when she pulled the trigger in her bedroom. I guess Mr. Humphrey's desired result was achieved, but it's hard to impress an 11-year-old with such praise for an eloquently written book when explaining that she got the strength to leave him behind after it came into her possession.
Rating: Summary: Final Exit is THE textbook for euthanasia Review: Final Exit has come to be the best book for those who wish to escape terminal suffering either by self-deliverance or assisted suicide. It was a bestseller in l991 and continues
to sell worldwide in solid quantities. This book does not
deal with the moral and ethical aspects - they should be
read elsewhere - but with the 'nuts and bolts' of a person
choosing to end their life because of unbearable physical pain and distress.
Rating: Summary: Routes to freedom and dignity Review: For one who has just watched his father die a miserable and lonely death in a nursing home and who is watching his mother die slowly the same way, this book gives me some hope that my child will not have to experience the same torture. The book is concise, factual, and to the point. It is informative, but does not try to persuade one way or the other. Humphry discusses dozens of methods of suicide and recommends the ones he thinks are best, and why they are. His book is a great help.
Rating: Summary: Katharine Hepburn & the book 'Final Exit' Review: From "KATE REMEMBERED" BY A. SCOTT BERG ,PAGE 258 "She became intrigued enough with Derek Humphry's Final Exit, a detailed account of how to take one's own life, to have two copies, one on each bedstand, 'You're too young for this,' she said upon giving me a copy, 'but everybody should read it.'"
Rating: Summary: Save your money unless you don't have the stones for a razor Review: Great information for one who is planning on makeing that final exit. I belive a work like this is empowering and paradoxically life affirming. One of the common causes of depression is the feeling of powerlessness and being trapped exacerbated by those who try to add guilt to the mix by concerning subject with how their loved one's may react. I am always amused by those who say suicide is the most selfish act when in reality it is asking one to stay alive for you that is the most selfish. How can such demands do anything but increase the feeling of captivity the potential suicide may feel. Neithcze pointed out that the thought of suicide could be a powerful comfort to help one through many a long night. Hess spelled it out more clearly and less poetically in Der Steppenwolf, knowing that, in the final analysis you are in controle and can choose to check out now if you want can make tommarow bareable. Oddly enough putting the power of suicide in the hands of one who feels powerless could give them the strenght to put off the dirt nap for a long while.
Rating: Summary: A TRULY HUMANITARIAN BOOK Review: I once happened upon a mouse caught in a trap. It was badly wounded, but not dead. Needless to say, I put it out of its misery. Unfortunately, our culture is dominated by a monstrous world-view that has less regard for human life than I had for that mouse: Christianity. Politicians who thumb their noses at the Constitution forcibly impose their theological dogma on all of us--a dogma that I can only call "the Divine Right of Suffering"--the view that your life belongs, not to you, but to a sadistic supernatural ghost, and that no matter how much pain you're in, you have no right to end your own life. To call their vicious dogma "respect for life" is the most monstrous "big lie" that can be imagined. Until Christians are civilized and made to respect the right of every individual to his own life, "Final Exit" is an essential book to have. Since a fair amount of preparation is necessary--preparation that in a decent society you could seek from a skilled professional--you should have this book on hand well ahead of time--just in case you ever need it.

Rating: Summary: Not the best book on self-deliverance Review: I read this book, and found that there is little information regarding methods other than plastic bags. I want information regarding where to obtain specific drugs that will be quick and painless. This book really didn't address that at all.
Rating: Summary: Self-Deliverance Made Simple Review: I'm not saying that people should kill themselves or anything. But if you're going to do it, you may as well know what you're doing. This book gives practical instruction for the suicidal, without passing judgment on them. I have to applaud the intent of the publishers...
