Rating: Summary: Fantastic book Review: I bought this book in January after seeing a Gene Daoust on Inside Edition. I was about 12-15 lbs overweight and had pretty much run the gamit on diet plans. I would lose the weight only to see it reappear once I came off the diet. I wanted to find a plan that I could live with the rest of my life and this is exactly what this one is. I can not speak highly enough about the plan.I started out on the 21-day fat flush program and dropped 10 lbs during this time. I also exercise daily but nothing to really cause any weight loss changes. Now it 4 months later and I'm down 12 lbs and have no plans to lose anymore weight, just maintain. I highly recommend the book.
Rating: Summary: 50/50 review Review: Some friends of mine suggested this book. After much convincing I decided to give the Formula a try. I am not one for silly fad diets. I believe in just making healthy eating choices and exercising. The bad points: 1. What an expensive diet!!! If you want any variety in your meals the grocery bill really adds up. 2. I'm a true italian, bread and pasta. The fat flush made me miserable. Not just mentally, I felt so drained and muggy physically. I don't understand why everyone raves about how great they feel. I physically felt drained. I truly believe I was in carb withdrawal. 3. Most of the recipes were not simple. After coming home from work I didn't want to sit in the kitchen. At least not every night. 4. Whether the formula (40-30-30) truly works or not, it doesn't matter because you are cutting down on calories. The good points: 1. The recipes are fantastic! They truly taste great. 2. You're full. There was never a time where I was left hungry. In fact, often I could barely finish my meal. 3. Great job of explaining the science. As I said, I am a skeptic of diet fads, but the science behind it is what convinced me to at least give it a try. The results: There weren't any. It was so disapointing! All the testimonials claimed to lose some weight in even the first week and I lost none. I'd say I'm about average size. I'd like to lose 20 lbs to be "skinny". I exercised/weight trained and still nothing. I wonder if this works for those that are overwieght 20+ to lose (not meaning any offense by that) vs. 20- to lose. Needless to say I didn't make it through the fat flush. Nothing was flushing for me. And my friends that made the suggestion? Didn't last more than a week. Better luck to the rest of you.
Rating: Summary: Where is the index? Review: There is one major problem with this book -- no index. I found myself continually flipping pages to locate a recipe or part of the text I wanted to refer back to or read again. With this much information, it is necessary to include an index for the reader. Another thing I noticed was that quite a bit of the exact same information is repeated in different parts of the book. On the positive side, there really are some good recipes in the book - try the shreadded chicken. Overall, I was disappointed in the organization of the book.
Rating: Summary: The Formula: Life Changing Review: All my life I have been told, "Eat a balanced diet." Nobody really defined "balanced" except "something from each food group." So what is "balanced?" This book shows how to balance your diet and why it is balanced. "Balanced" is defined as 40% calories in carbs, 30% in protein and (yea!) 30% in fat--each meal, each snack, each dessert (yes, desserts). Every recipe is delicious. It's real food. There's so much to eat at each meal you may not be able to finish it. With this 40:30:30 balance, your body has no choice but to convert stored fat into energy. And what energy! I feel great. I lost 4 lbs the first week with no exercise. The second week I WANTED to exercise. I'm busy with projects...I don't want to just sit around dozing. My wife and I actually have more energy after dinner than before. Food becomes a source of energy, not something to put you to sleep. This book has made my wife into a great cook: each dish is visually appealing, aromatic, interesting, flavorful and satisfying. And we (I, especially) are losing weight and have increased energy at the same time. What more could you want? I refuse to call this "dieting." It is eating properly for the first time in my life. This is the way we will eat from here on out.
Rating: Summary: Wow! You look great! Review: People keep saying "Wow you look great!" Followed by, "What have you been doing?". I tell them I've been doing The Formula! I can't believe how great I feel after dropping 19 lbs. and how easy it was to lose it. This book is really easy to follow and the recipes are awesome. The farther along you get , the easier it becomes! My appetite is cut in half! I'm telling all my friends about this book. This book is a "10" in my opinion!
Rating: Summary: It Really Works! Review: My wife and I just completed our third week on this program (te fat flush section) and the results speak for themselves, my wife at 16lbs and myself at 12lbs. The program is simple and much more importantly makes a hell of a lot of sense. You are eating really good food and in proportion. You are not leaving out carbs or loading up on tons of protein. You are eating everything in balance. The recipes are absolutely incredible there isn't one so far that we did not like. Like most people who want to lose weight and feel better about themselves we have tried most of the diets out there and this one is simple, it gives good advice and it works. The Doust's should keep it coming with some more books. Thank You!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: This book is great! Review: I think this book is great! I have it on my kitchen counter and I use it as my cookbook! My husband and I have been following The Formula for about five weeks and have lost 15lbs. each! I don't understand how someone can say it's hard to follow. They obviously aren't trying it! It's the easiest weight I've ever lost and I plan to eat this way forever! I'd recommend this book to everyone!
Rating: Summary: If you've read The Zone, skip this one Review: I'm a Zone fan and I was sorely disappointed in this book. Their way of calculating "blocks" is no easier than Sears' method - in fact, it's more complicated, unless you have a calculator on you at all times. They don't say anything that Sears didn't cover. It might be worth buying for the recipes - I tried one of the cheesecakes which was pretty good. There's a lot of "fluff" in this book. Not sure if it's worth the hard cover price!
Rating: Summary: An All Too Familiar Concept - Who Needs Constant Repitition Review: This book was a profound disappointment. When I buy a book, I don't expect to be reading the same information over and over and over..... The author's could have used some new information that Barry Sears hadn't already wrote about in his books. By now everyone knows the formula that they are trying to get across, so why not write about something that readers and dieters don't yet know. I am sorry that I wasted my time and money on something that has already been published. Let's get some up to date facts and studies on keen nutrition issues.
