Rating: Summary: Not just for Buddhists!! Review: As many other reviewers have said, this book changed my life. I plan on reading it at least once a year for the rest of my life. It does require a certain open-mindedness of course to the greater meaning of life, but if you have the slightest inkling in this direction, read this book!Contrary to the title, this book is not just for Buddhists. The author takes all religions and even atheists into account and the teachings are by no means specific to a religion. They are only specific to human beings. In summary - An extremely refreshing view on life in our sometimes mad Western world.
Rating: Summary: My first Tibetan Buddhism Book reading Review: After I had a dream I saw myself dying in a very specific way, I looked for an answer and I have been recommended this book. I thought it would take me forever to read it but it took me only two days to go through it. Based on the advice of my mom who is an advanced buddhist student, I read it without trying to analyse it. And it was great. The book is easy to read, it's like a story and you just keep on reading. I learned a lot about the Bardo and had a great explanation for my dream. It's a great book to start your Buddhist teachings with. Everything makes sense. It's been 2 weeks I read it and still all the stories are coming back into my head. I am still digesting this wonderful book. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to understand the process of dying and living.

Thank you for this tool, and pass it on!
Rating: Summary: I can only echo what other reviewers have said here. Review: This book is a gem. What is wonderful about the Tibetan Buddhist approach is how squarely it has us face death as an essential aspect of life. Here there is no denial of death. Instead death is embraced for what it can teach us about the human condition and the spiritual aspect of our lives. This book is an essential guide that has wisdom to offer to those of any religious or philosophical persuasion. It is one of the classics in the literature on death and dying.
Rating: Summary: Extremely Useful. Review: Whenever I read a book, I generally use highlighter and underliner to mark the sentences and words that convey the true meaning and essence of what the author wants to say. While reading The Tibetan Book of Living And Dying, I had to stop using the highlighter after a few pages only as the most of the words on each page were worthy of being highlighted. Indeed, the author has said so much precious on every page that a reader must read and re-read the book and with every reading she/he gets more and more knowing. The subject of death has been most puzzling and perplexing to humankind since the time immemorial. The Eastern way of looking at the death as only a 'transition' is explained by the author in a profoundly simple manner. The book certainly helps one to understand the true meaning of the phenomena called death. This understanding helps one to reduce the irrational fear of death. From the lives of the great men and women we know that those who 'lived' a life can only meet the 'death' with equnimity. Thus the author has first taught the art of 'living'. It is only through right type of living that we can 'live' the death also. I suggest that this book be read by all the Buddhist as well as by non buddhists also. Every one who reads it will find something for him/her. I salute Sogyal Rinpoche for giving us a wonderful gift of THE TIBETAN BOOK OF LIVING AND DYING.
Rating: Summary: A Precious Gem Review: Sincere seekers will find much to learn in this book. Even though it is a work on Tibetan Buddhism, people of all faiths can benefit from reading it. There are tens of thousands of books on religion and philosophy, but this one is one of the small number worth reading, and then re-reading.
Rating: Summary: Insightful but over the top Review: ... The authors compassion and wisdom shine through, however I started to find the outlandish claims of the reincarnation process to become tiresome. Essentially the better half of the book is the beginning which is concerned with "living". Here the author provides concrete insights into the nature of our human existence and advice for leading a "good" life. The second half which is concerned with "dying" and its process, really started to become barely tolerable with all the ritualistic and mythical nonsense. It is all presented as if it is fact and beyond dispute, and that you are close minded if you dont just accept it as truth. I'm sorry, I need some real scientific evidence beyond the authors stories and anecdotes if I'm going to believe these claims. More insight and less "religion" would have been better.
Rating: Summary: WOW Review: This book just pulled me in.Its so true in this culture we don't value the elderly as we should or the dying for that matter.I never realized just how complex beliefs on reincarnation are and it's helped me open my mind to the idea.Take Care......
Rating: Summary: awesome Review: buy it and read it. you'll be happy you did.
Rating: Summary: This book changed my life Review: For those of us who have questioned what this life is for and what death means, this book provides many answers. After reading this book, I began to examine what I had done in my life. The author clearly explains the concept of karma and "bardos", and provides very detailed examples on how to help people who are suffering and dying, as well as the bereaved. Even if you are not suffering from a critical illness or know someone who is, this book is invaluable. The lessons it teaches us about death are most valuable for leading a meaningful life.
