Rating: Summary: Second time around! Review: I tried this diet years ago when the first book came out. I felt great and had lots of energy. But I only ate salad or eggs at my Complimentary Meals. Therefore, I failed after about 2 months, even though I was losing weight steadily. But I never forgot how wonderful I felt. This time, I decided to give the recipes a try and am surprised at how good most of them taste. I am not bored and the weight is coming off slowly, which is what the book recommends. I have read the second book, the Lifespan Diet, but I decided to follow the first book because it is working for me. I eat two times a day, for brunch and the Reward Meal at dinner. Honestly, I am not hungry or bored. This time - I'm on day 22 - I know I will succeed in doing this for life. I have 20 lbs to lose.
Rating: Summary: This one did not work for me. Review: I have tried many diets, and tried this one about 2 years ago. It didn't work for me. The style of eating was not natural, and the tendency to binge on the one-a-day reward meal meant that my weight loss was non-existent. Last January I started the Zone diet, which is a sensible eating program that has a similar goal - stabilizing insulin and blood sugar levels. This is October. After 9-1/2 months, I have lost 58 pounds, 11 inches from my waist, and 9 inches from my hips. I look and feel younger, and I didn't start a regular exercise program until about 6 weeks ago, so most of the weight loss is attributable to the ZONE eating program. Also, hunger is within normal bounds, and controllable.
Rating: Summary: This diet works! Review: I read the original Carbohydrate Addict diet book. I've been on the diet--off and on-- since August '98. While combining exercise and the principles of the authors, I have finally reached my goal. I lost 20 of the last "pregnancy" pounds (my child is 13) and am now in a size 8 dress and 10 pants. I was as proud as Oprah when I tried on some jeans at K-Mart and had to get a size 10. (I used to wear 14's comfortably.) I announced it to the entire women's department!

Rating: Summary: Willing to try but a little confused.... Review: I read the book, and thought ok, I'll give it a shot. Even my husband was willing and he's usually skeptical about 'diets.' We've been on it for about a week, and both have lost 1lb. It hasn't helped my husband in his hunger (he's stlll hungry) and the cravings are still there. The thing that keeps us going is the so called 'reward meal," allowing you to eat whatever you want within an hour. Now I've found out that the new version of this book says you can only eat 1/4 or 1/3 whatever it is of carbs in your reward meal. So what happened to all the claims from this first book about the reward meal? It apparently worked, so why the change? Was it all untrue? And if you follow the guidlines from the first book, will it not work? Seems like this has now become a version of Atkin's... The Heller's claimed that you need carbs and that eliminating them altogether is not healty, and that you can have sweeteners etc. But in this new version, you are virtually cutting out all carbs etc. So what's the deal? It's all very confusing. I don't mind trying this, but I'm not sure it will work, and what version to follow. I'm hoping someone can help me out here. The book seemed pretty good, but now I'm thinking that with the new one out, how accurate were the results???? PLEASE HELP ME UNDERSTAND....
Rating: Summary: In theory, the Hellers have given us a good head start. Review: Americans have a long road ahead in understanding moderation and discipline. We see, we want, we take. Food is no exception. While this plan is not for everyone, it is a very good beginning in understanding the need for balance and moderation in the foods that MANY of us tend to eat. I take some issue with the Hellers' plan because it does not stress enough the need for consistent exercise. For most, exercise should be the FIRST step to a healthier mind and body. Its effects on how and what we eat should never be overlooked. The plan also discourages eating fresh fruit -- other than as part of a "reward meal." I think the benefit of fresh fruit in our diet overwhelms its effect on our insulin levels. Yes? Besides, I don't know of anyone who has contracted diabetes from eating too much fresh fruit.
Rating: Summary: The Lower Carbohydrate Revolution Continues Review: As the author of the first "insulin-conscious" gourmet cookbook (The Gourmet Prescription: High Flavor Recipes for Lower Carbohydrate Diets"), I applaud Oprah's effort to focus attention on this book and the Hellers' carb-curbing strategy for weight loss and cardiovascular health. There's no question that this diet works! However, true food lovers like myself will be disappointed in the unimaginative recipes which I believe lead ultimately toward food boredom and carb-binging. People need FLAVOR as well as information to make successful dietary interventions. Followers of this diet could benefit enormously from the flavor-enhancing techniques (like stovetop smoking) and time-saving strategies in "The Gourmet Prescription".
Rating: Summary: Natural diet-? Review: Though I'm not overweight by other people's standards, I tried this diet out of greed (for lack of a better word). It worked for a few weeks- starts are always promising but then trying to control my appetite for carbs until dinner, feeling like I was limited caused me to binge on carbs and my reward meal ended up being one huge dessert. I may have been addicted to carbs but this diet made me be obsessed with them. I got a eating disorder of sorts out of it too. I think Suzanne Somers and Montignac is much smarter and healthier.
Rating: Summary: Misleading title - It is NOT for people who like carbos. Review: I was, perhaps foolishly, mislead by the title. I thought it would be a diet for people who like carbohydrates and understand their role in stamina and how important they are for physical training. This diet is meant to wean you from carbohydrates - something that makes so sense to me or to the Food Triangle for that matter.I also question the wisdom of a diet that advocates skipping breakfast and lunch. This is in the first example given by the author on how she was able to lose weight. I doubt that any nutritionist would support this idea. The trend recently is to eat more, smaller meals.
Rating: Summary: Interesting analysis with helpful tips! Review: In this book the two Dr. Hellers present the result of their extensive decade-long research. The conclusion is astonishing and therefore they were able to write down quite a few helpful tips and effective strategies for the carbohydrate addict. These should help to at least shed a few pounds for willing-to-change readers. But it's not a stressful diet, instead it requires just a little discipline. Another book that I really recommend and that has helped me tremendously with my weight, as it analyzes the root problem of many key issues why we're unhappy and in turn crave for certain unhealthy foods, is Dietmar Scherf's "I Love Me: Avoiding and Overcoming Depression" which is also available at Amazon.
