Rating:  Summary: Terrible... Review: This book, assembled by a husband and wife team with no credentials _I_ can find in the book, is a load of poorly thought-out half-truths and some comments that border on irresponsibility. There's far too much to correct here, but a few gross misconceptions are the following: citrus fruits are not basic. They are acidic. Hence, citric and ascorbic acid. Finding "basic" or "acidic" foods is pretty pointless in the first place, as stomach juices are such strong acid it doesn't matter, and bases can harm as well (lye?). Also, protein does not leech calcium from bones. This is based on a study done in the 80's using protein _extracts_. They were, incidentally, reconstituted with milk - a calcium rich substance. This explains the increased urinary excretion.
Rating:  Summary: a great approach to healthy eating! Review: I finnished the book only a few days ago, and have been applying the principles about 85% of the time since. I already feel different! I feel great. Less bloated after meals and more energy. Harvey and Marilyn made me feel better about my views on not eating meet or dairy, and still getting what my body needs. Thank you! The only thing I dissagree with is the comments about going in the sun without sunscreen to reap the full benefits. With my mother a melanoma survivor, I know going in he sun without protection has NO benefits. Be careful out there people!!!
Rating:  Summary: Every American should read this book. Review: Since over 55% of Americans are overweight and something in the range of 35% of Americans are obese I think this book is fundamental to teaching good or at least improved nutrition to us as a nation. We should be ashamed of our poor health as a whole. This book just teaches common sense. We are marketed so much food that is so bad for us. In moderation these foods are okay as a treat, but we consume so much of it regularly it is no wonder the stats on American health are so poor. This book empowered me put into perspective what food is for, not a pleasure device but rather a source of nurishment. I apply these principles to my eating habits on average about 65% of the time and have shed weight, kept it off and enjoy better health, and boundless energy. Take control of your health. Don't depend on diets and potions. Just learn to eat better and balance that with exercise. This book will help you.
Rating:  Summary: Some things are good, some things AREN'T Review: I read the book and tried the concept, lost weight, felt better for awhile (in joint pain especially) and then developed continuous painful heartburn after eating fruit if I did not have regular food at least half an hour later. If I ate nothing until noon (as the book says to do) I found the fruit DID NOT digest within half an hour (as the book says it will). I would be burping it the entire morning. The fruit sure felt acidic, even though the Diamonds state fruit is alkaline. How can fruit be alkaline when it's used in alpha-hydroxy potions to burn dead skin off your face? Any explanations or similar problems?
Rating:  Summary: Fit for Life turns nutritional mystery into instinct. Review: Fit for Life is much more than a diet book. Imagine something so powerful that unprecedented weight loss is a mere side effect. Our bodies beg to be healthy. Fit for Life will show you how to open the gates. How to ALLOW your body to do what it already knows. The Diamonds did not invent this knowledge, its been around for a very long time. The Diamonds simply brought it to the public, easily accessible and easy to understand. If I were reborn and could learn only one thing, I would pick this book without any hesitation. Practice with diligence and you'll never look back. And incidentally, I too lost weight...20 lbs in one month.
Rating:  Summary: The most important book I have ever read Review: I read Fit For Life whilst on holiday, and before I returned home to make a start on the concepts, I already felt deep down that it was right right right... Here I am 6 months later with energy and vitality that I thought I had lost in my teens. Thankyou Harvey and Marilyn - i.o.u.
Rating:  Summary: Comming back after 10 years Review: 10 years ago, I lost 50 lbs. after learning the the basic concepts in Fit for Life. I kept it off for 2 years and got off the program. I am now returning to what I know is a successful and common sense approach to loosing weight and feeling more energetic.
Rating:  Summary: Good but Not That Practical Review: This book is one of the most interesting books I've ever read. It works wonder but I don't think it's a right way for skinnies as one reader has said. Prabably other ways of eating might be a better answer to skinny people wanting a detox. On the other hand, it's worth thinking that people in the old days (no matter where in the world they lived) managed to survive without that food combination and aged no less than 80 years. I also wonder how the Eskimos, Scandinavians and those living in temperate climate find fresh (and watery in such harsh weather!) food all year round? Doesn't it make more sense to eat what's available during that season? Living in Thailand makes it easy for me to eat mostly fresh or lightly cooked food because you need watery food when it's hot 365 days a year. But when I eat tropical fruits and veggies in the US, I'm sick. This happens every time. So I personally believe that some principles and recipes in Fit For Life is correct only when you live in tropical regions.
Rating:  Summary: FIT FOR THE TRASH Review: It amazes me how people can write a book like this when they have no credentials or not even an ounce of common sense. Their logic in this book is over simplified, and generally innacurate. Ask any nutrionist, licensed dietician,endocrinologist what they think of the book and they will probably shake their head and walk away. If I could have gave it a lower score than "1" I would have. I hate to think that people have made the authors rich by buying this tripe.
Rating:  Summary: A bunch of BS from people with few credentials Review: I read this book over 10 years ago when I was a little more impressionable and a little less knowledgeable about health, fitness, and nutrition. Boy was I hooked. For a few weeks I went on this diet and raved about it to others, but in the long run it did nothing for me. The couple that wrote this book are not doctors and the whole book is based on very questionable theories about when to eat different types of foods, what combinations to avoid, how long to wait after having one type of food before having it's alternate, and so on. A very good book for people who are obsessive about food and nutrition and weightloss. There's so much food-alchemy going on here, you have enough to keep you preocuppied for quite a while! And yet people lead seemingly extremely healthy, fit lives by just adhering to a low-fat, high-fiber diet with a moderate amount of calories and regular exercise! Go figure! The whole diet-book industry wastes so much of the consumer's pocketbook with different approaches, theories, etc. All you need to understand is that moderation is the key. As long as you restrict fat to a minimum, exercise regularly, and eat a balanced diet with lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, and, if you like some fish and even meat once in a while, you'll be fine.
